Preasons, Pre Quals, etc.

So I've been playing LoL for about 2 years now, and I was told something I don't know much about so I thought I'd ask for clarification.

When we have our final ranks for the season and we keep playing but can't rank up, do those games boost us and our chances of getting into a higher rank when the Provisionals come? Or how does that work? Explain please?
