Does anyone else feel like Evelynn's build destination is hazy?
I was a big fan of Evelynn in Season 2 when she used to get played AP mid, and I sorta stopped playing her when she got moved to a more AD jungle role. I've been reexamining her recently and the more I look at her the more I feel like her itemization and role in a team is super weird. She can succeed buying AP burst (Luden's, Deathcap), Tanky AP (Rylai's/Liandry's, Hourglass) AD (Maw, BotRK, Trinity Force), On-hit hybrid (Gunblade, Lich Bane, Nashor's), or even Off-Tank (Frozen Heart, Odin's, Banshee's).
I wouldn't really describe these as multiple build paths, but instead multiple build destinations. Which isn't always a bad thing. We've seen some champions, such as Tristana, Kog'Maw and Corki build both AD and AP and be successful.
The difference, I feel, is that having these multiple builds didn't change their core gameplay too much. They might prioritize some spells over another because of it, but they're still all ranged damage dealers. Evelynn, on the other hand, could be a burst assassin, a bruiser, a duelist, or really whatever you want.
The main problem I feel is that there are parts of her kit getting in the way of doing any one thing great.
If I want to her a burst assassin, let her E do magic damage, even if the damage is overall less so that way she can build Magic Pen and straight AP items instead of having to go AD.
If you want her to be an AD Duelist, give her something to reward her for staying the fight, since her mostly magic damage kit isn't scaling the same as a Lee Sin's abilities for example. Maybe a mark on her Q hits that lets me lifesteal or something.
If she's a tank/bruiser, give her a slow on my E, or something to reward her for building health or resistances in my mostly damage kit, like Garen has on his W.
I guess my argument boils down to "a jack of all trades is a master of none," and in a game like League of Legends, where the opportunity cost of picking one champion over another really matters, I feel like unclear build destinations is a real problem.
