Shen tips for a noob?

So watching some Worlds, seeing Shen used to do some cool things. (Admittedly, it seems to be more the pro teams not respecting Shen's ult in fights, but still) Anyone care to give a noob some tips?

Obviously, 'keep an eye on the map' and 'know if your ult can really save your teammate, or if it'll just give the enemy an extra kill'. But are there any other tips or tricks to share?

Honestly? shen is pretty much straightfoward but you need lots of practice. He is easy to learn but has a high skill ceiling. But basic things,

  • Mind your energy! spam spam spam and you'll have nothing left to use your moves with.
  • make the most of your shield in lane in trades, so when your shield is up make the trades! not before it is your sustain.
  • Ult a little early regardless of how the ult shield scales. If they day your ult is a no go, and it has a considerable amount of CD time you don't want to waste it
  • even though he is a tank his specialty is honestly juking. He can juke sooo incredibly well you can cause a chase to save someone or just distract them for incredibly long and survive
  • don't tell too many people how good he is, or else people will start using him again and get him nerfed... again.

  • Don't buy sunfire for starters (or at all). Get Tiamat for waveclear.

  • Go whatever defense items your team needs after.I like to build warmogs on him as a 5th/6th item. I haven't tried Stoneplate on him, so I don't know if that's a good idea.

  • Use ult when your teammates are retarded get into trouble.

  • Your W is the bane of any autoattack based champion... for less than 2 seconds.

  • Take grasp Bond of stone Stoneborn (maybe not for top, as grasp adds more dmaage and healing but support this is a must) pact or CotC. No exceptions.

  • Teleport is a must for me, since I can R, do some stuff in the fight, recall, tp to lane.

If you E onto someone, also hit Q to instantly get three empowered auto attacks and cut off maybe a seconds different between your first set of empowered auto attacks and your second set of empowered auto attacks

Shen's W can block any autoattack, so try to block an empowered autoattack if possible.

I agree with some stuff said by other users.

About the ult, only use it when there is a play to be made. It's a super long cool down and you can only use it at the right time. On top of that everytime you do use it, you are putting your opponent laner ahead. It's important to catch up in farm.

Know what your W can block. It can block any auto(duh) but also enhanced autos(nasus q and even Garen q) and three hit passive procs like gnars magic damage and vaynes true damage. It's also possible to block Warwicks ult (lol) see him dive you with R? Click W.

Also get Tiamat for waveclear into Titanic Hydra, honestly Sunfire cape is trash, I still wonder why I build it when Hydra is a superior waveclear item and actually adds to your damage output towards champions.

Also hop over to r/ Shen for more info(subreddit for Shen mains)

Shen just feels so boring now, if I wanted an auto attack based champ I'd go with Tryndamere. :| It's boring just to slowly hack somebody to death compared to just hacking it off in one blow. Shen's ult and e just feel nice... Usually, don't see Shen played much anymore. Fun factor: 70%-25% old Shen was not as strong but was more fun in a sense of being able to q farm and hp regen a lot and a lot of hp back then.
