Why even use spell thiefs anymore? PBE changes

With the changes in PBE to support items whats the point in buying one of the spell thief variants, when you can get gold faster out of one of the targons, while sharing the gold you get to boot. With the way the 1k gold cap on support items currently work, when you use spell thiefs you're making 1k gold for yourself, while with targons you make 2k gold split between you, and whatever ally happened to be near. Given targons now works at range it just seems to be a flat better choice then spell thiefs right now.

probably because you want damage and that damage would be more useful than the 1k gold you share with an ally?

What damage? Spellthiefs is 8/15/60 Ap, 5/10/35 Ad, and Targons is 5/10/40 Ap, 3/6/24 Ad. It so negligible before the final upgrade that the 1k gold given to an ally is worth far more, and by the time you get to the final upgrade you're not there for the damage (generally I understand there are some champions in the support role that are there solely for damage).

This isn't even taking into account the extra health targons gives you, on top of its healing.
