I feel like no one really talks about Death Recap

Doesn't it seem strangely neglected? Sometimes you want to figure out what spell or combination of spells just bursted you down or what kind of damage you're receiving the most of so you can build against it, so you open up Death Recap and what do you see?

You might've started the fight with about 3000 health but only about 1000 of the damage you received is accounted for, some of it coming from weird sources or effects with placeholder names, the rest is like 1% from minions or Dragon from halfway across the map. Now not all examples are that unhelpful, but it has been this broken pretty much for its entire lifetime. With the amount of effort that Riot puts into Champion updates, Rune reworks, or even as simple as the recent Augments tab in the Client, you have to wonder why we can't have a Death Recap that isn't just limited to 3 damage sources or can't even prioritize the largest amounts of damage you died to.

I know there's probably more complex mechanics that I'm not aware of in how Death Recap even remembers everything that was dealt to your specific champion, but not having the resources to do anything about it doesn't seem like a valid excuse anymore. It's a tool that can help players understand how damage works in the game and how to play against it, I think, so I don't want its potential and significance, however minor, to be lost on Riot or the community.

So ends my rant, blown into eternity, like the sands of the desert.

It's abandoned by riot and the community as a whole has given up on it

Its so embedded in the game that if they were to change it it would take MONTHS to do.

I believe a Rioter said once that they didn't believe updating the Death Recap would actually give a benefit worthy of the cost- mainly because players already obtain that information in other ways.

With perhaps the one exception of Corki or now Kai'Sai, simply holding tab lets you see enemy items and know what damage type to build against them. Even if this were not true, the color-coded numbers you see in-game tell you this as well. With no exceptions at all, holding tab lets you identify what enemy champion is the strongest by kill-count, creep-score, and items. And knowing what champion abilities do is general game knowledge- not something you should be reading about mid-game from a Death Recap.

It would be nice to have but putting any sort of decent resources behind it isn't worth the pay-off of... pretty much nothing since the playerbase can do without it.

Not worth the resources. There are many other things that need to take priority and I would rather riot not even think about the death recap until they fix more pressing gameplay issues.

Actually I completely forgot about this. It really bothered me for quite some time and still does to the point where i really see no use in any in depth use of it even being in the game. Though i could probably go on a bit of a rant myself instead I would like to propose a solution instead of just point out more things that could be fixed.

So if I may suggest:

As we all know the game can keep track of everything from the entire breakdown at endgame (even with charts included) to just the simple fact of showing the players who got assists when a champion is killed (heck they even do it to baron and dragon when both teams hit it) Sooooo why cant they do something similar to combined the concept of the simple and the complicated?

For the Death re-cape, open a large screen that is sectioned off into 6 sections (3 on top 3 on bottom)
Format for the boxes will be set as such:

  • Visually in each box would be set up so the champs pic in the upper left followed by the champions name (unless you want to set it as the name appears if you hover over it like you do in "tab") with move set under that with dmg output.

So as a visual

(champ pic) (summoner name) -q (dmg) -w (dmg) -e (dmg) -r (dmg)
(Item damage if you wanted it in champ box)

  • The most damage done is on upper left and least amount is on bottom right -6th place holder can be either for 6v6 matches (if that mayhem ever comes back) or an "other dmg" (mastery, items, but mainly things like jg mobs, turrets, fountain)

There should be plenty of room to fit at the very least this amount of info and yes I know there is a LOT more in the real breakdown of having the game keep track of and relay that damage info but RIOT has some pretty smart Champions of their own and I have faith they could do it if they set there mind to it.

I feel like Riot really doesn't talk about death recap should be the title

Personally League's death recap has taught me a life lesson: No amount of money in the real world can accurately tell me how I died in a video game.

Death recap has been a meme for years. Riot does want to work on it, but it takes time and resources.

Maybe research next time - they fixed it some time ago, then it broke the next patch. They have to fix this stuff every patch, so it's not worth it; better fix the gamebreaking bugs and balance the game, or add new content.

Somehow I always get Killed by Janna W and Vayne Silver bolts and Veiger E even if they are on my team.

I just love to see that Jhin dealt 100 true dmg with silver bolts.

That thing is so bugged all the time.

hhaavviikk9/23/2018, 1:56:22 PM1 votes

riot's just a small indie company, they can't do everything.

Blackii79/23/2018, 5:22:22 PM1 votes

We gave up on it, we are still trying to get the game balanced first but it is not working very well.

Khristophoros9/22/2018, 10:33:50 PM1 votes

Personally I never really cared. It was always funny to look at how inaccurate it was ever since they introduced it but its like... do I really need help seeing what killed me? No honestly I don't.

As a programmer i have always had a feeling that death recap is built on top of every other glitch in the game. You see people dying in zhonyas, in alpha strike, auto attacking during stasic ect. In order to fix death recap, it may require a complete overhaul on how damage is fundamentally applied. therefore being no longer worth the work

TrikzterzArma9/23/2018, 12:48:34 AM1 votes

It's because Riot literally doesn't care. It has been brought up sooo many times for many years but nothing is happening.

Minimac20009/23/2018, 1:05:57 AM1 votes

It was mentioned in one of meddler's game play notes about 6 months ago.... but yeah, I don't think it's changing any time soon. It's always been this way

Aurelion Söl9/23/2018, 1:12:05 AM1 votes

It definitely needs a rework... Half the time it says I took damage less than the health I had which was some how lethal. It would also be nice to see a replay of your death like they have in call of duty. This would allow players to see what they did wrong and they could possibly fix their mistakes instead of flaming their team. I use to do this a lot until I started watching the vods I had which I downloaded from my match history.

VoraciousX9/23/2018, 1:18:06 AM1 votes

People complain about it and it pretty much gets ignored so I think people just gave up.
