I went 8-2 in placements. After being Silver last season, I got Bronze 1.

EDIT: Answered

I have a question about how placements work in ranked: How do they work? Last season, I was Silver (and yes, was very close to being Bronze 1). I had assumed going 8-2 in placements this season would put me somewhere above that. I'm assuming this means Riot considers other things for placement, but I don't know what they could be. I'm not a terrible player, and get matched with Silver/Gold in normals. (Not saying Bronze 1 is terrible, I just didn't think it was for me. I guess I was wrong.) I haven't been reported for anything and I have two champs at mastery level 7, but I don't think that matters anyway. Any thoughts? What's considered for placements other than W/L and last season's rank?

Ok, your mmr is softreset before your placments (Your MMR + 1200)/2 Chances are, most of the time you will drop down quite a bit because of that. Then you have to raise your mmr with the placements. You can go 10/0 and not get enough of a boost in mmr to reach our last rank.

This season, most players seem to have dropped about a full tier from their previous MMR.

When the reset occurred, I was in Platinum 5 with roughly Platinum 2 MMR. After going 6-4 in my placement matches, I was placed in Gold 2.

Silver 4 on my smurf last season, went 9-1 placements, landed Bronze I.

My main was Silver II, went I think 7-3, landed Silver V. Everyone gets moved down. Your experience is probably better than many people's.

What the other comments says is correct, basically riot wants you to work for the rank and climb

Its a soft reset.

Basically everyone gets knocked down a tier and you need to climb again.

This same things happens to almost everyone. The majority of ppl get placed a few divisions below where they ended last season. I went 9-1 in placements last year and got put in Gold 4 from being Gold 1 the previois season. Its sort of riots way of making you earn that tanking again, and then climbing from there. But just remember that your first 2 placements are always the most important. Those 2 basically decide how close youre going to be to last seasons ranking

unless your MMR was freakishly high, you're probably getting bumped down

Ok, thanks everyone. I hadn't realized Riot doesn't let you just pick back up where you left off, and now I feel a little lame for expecting them too. Working for your rank again sounds perfectly reasonable.
