You know what'd be nice? Changing Guardian-Angel and Banshee-Veil back into pure defense items

vvasya··88 votes·15,939 views

It's so annoying having to deal with item 3026 on practically EVERY god damn AD champion in the game, and I never see item 3102 built that much anymore except in the most niche of situations and even then it's usually only ever grabbed by AP assassin nuke bots Zoe Leblanc Fizz etc.

Maybe making them into pure defensive items is a better call then leaving them as damage items with defensive effects.

Also, can we make item 3190 give 50/50 armor and MR instead of a weird 60/30 ratio?

You usually don't buy locket against physical damage anyway, most big AOE is magic damage and thats where locket makes the most sense. Imagine you play against a team full of mages with a bunch of AOE spells that nuke you in teamfights, would you like to pay for 50 armor in that scenario?

Bishasaurus Flex2 votes

Ooo you right. Then it would make sense to remove the armor and add CDR!

Just kidding. We don't need anymore CDR...

ModAcademy Kayn1 votes

Yeah, but couldn't that be purposeful? It's already good against AOE Magic Damage, isn't it counter intuitive that it also be good against Single target Damage as well? Forces it to be used for it's Sheilding, not as just another defense item with a neat active also there?

Great idea, I think that could really help against most of the burst dmg present right now

Totally agree, cannot count the number of times I wanted to buy banshee as ADC so I don't get 1 shot by a rogue spell.

Totally agree, but in order to accomplish this RIOT will need to roll back their insane focus on damage output. Marksmen have pretty much entirely forgone a defense item at this point, except for a Scimitar or a GA. And you can only have one of those or you won't do enough damage.

It's a very similar thing to what happened with enchanters. Rather than buffing their utility so that they stood a chance in lane against damage heavy mages or engage tank supports, they gave things like lulu and janna higher damage output.

I like this game a lot and have been playing since before TPA won worlds, but it's a little sickening how this game is so focused on damage, especially burst damage. Compare the game now to how it was when Samsung White won worlds, and the game just feels soooooo one dimensional and formulaic.

I don't agree. Damage used to be higher on mages and on adc's back in the day. But they were forced into a defensive item because defense was more useful due to lower pen on most champion. And the danger of being OneShot was so high that they purchased the defensive options. I think if riot just removed the psudo defensive items which also give damage we would see a more strategic game again. (hexdrinker upgrade and qss upgrade) forcing adc's and mages into defensive items by making it the most benifiticial is done by making it too dangerous to not purchase them.

I wish they changed it back just to see people complain on the boards that adcs are unkillable gods now with banshee on and that it should be melee only

Exactly when are they going to make all ADC items melee only? they are swords after all! Adc's do too much damage! [Heavy sarcasm]

AccurateYeet1 votes

Sarcasm maybe, but as an ad main I'll happily take some ranged replacement. It does feel weird carrying around 4/5 swords to make my gun stronger.

Giving up a damage item to purchase a Banchees results in a very noticable dip in damage late game. They are far less godly with lower DPS.

I wonder how many people remember why they changed GA.

Back in the day, in season 2, thornmail and GA were considered bad items for tanks to pick up, since they discouraged enemies from dumping damage into you, and as a tank you wanted to bait the enemy team into dumping as much damage as possible into you. If you died mid-teamfight, your team probably won that fight, since the enemy team had wasted a bunch of damage on your tanky ass.

But then damage grew higher, and tank stats weaker. Again, and again, and again. And tanks started picking up GA, 'cause otherwise they'd be focused and deleted at the start of teamfights, because why not? They're slow, low damage threats. Sitting ducks. Damage was so high that it didn't matter if you used your shit to burst down the tank, you had plenty left. And so tanks needed to discourage enemies from just blowing them up, otherwise their slow, unwieldy kits wouldn't have time to do anything.

And people started complaining. Because killing a tank with a GA was a huge pain in the ass. These stupid goddamn tanks were super hard to kill, and that was a problem.

And Riot listened and decreed that no longer would GA be a good pickup on tanks. Not because tanks were being given independent tankiness, but because GA would now build out of a FUCKING BF SWORD.

Actually, they didnt like that it was a hybrid defense item that marksmen were 'required' to buy in the late game. So they gave it to 'fighters'... Which effectively gave marksmen armor.

didn't they change GA because it was abused by Aatrox and the previously added devourer?

he would have 3 hp bars and be able to kill your entire team if you didn't focus him, but if you focused him, the marksman did the same thing

if there was a zilean, this became 4. You can see how this would be a problem, especially when healing twice from BORK and his passive activating every other hit for sustain

Then just remove GA entirely. ADCs need to have really, really bad defensive itemization so that if you actually get on them, they die in 0.0001 seconds, given how much damage they do.

Wow youre a genius game designer I see, make the class die in 0.0001 seconds, cause current 0.5 seconds isnt enough, people will line up to play that class, im sure you also have some great ideas for your own main class, like giving them two flashes that also activate ghost and cleanse for the entire duration..

PrinceOfStorms1 votes

Considering that they're basically ranged assassins with zero counterplay post 12 minutes I'd say they should get counterplay in dying to a stiff breeze - like, halve their base HP and remove their base armor and MR. Force them to build at least one full tank item before any damage items just to live through lane.

ADCs right now are like how reworked Kayle is - she is an unstoppable god in the lategame but going 0/5 in the early game is considered okay. Except ADCs have a good enough early presence that they're unstoppable gods for most of the game.

The game is far, far more fun when ADCs are in general, hot garbage. Because when they aren't, the game becomes about them, and pretty much every other role loses a lot of agency.

I miss having GA 3rd-4th item on mages. I feel so dependent on zhonyas now, which isnt as protective as (old) GA.

GA on mages was always a meme build, it was trash, period and you dont miss it because you din't played it in the first place.

Tanks were using it though, but they have stoneplate now which is basically their version of guardian angel. The weird thing is that Guardian Angel gives only armor. I don't see any good reasoning behind it.

Sir Saltarin1 votes

Yeah, it was used on tanks.

But I was calling him out because he claims to miss GA on mages when it was never bought on mages.

I actually kinda like them though...

I love rushing Banshee Veil on Annie against poke opponents such as Lux or Zoe, champions focused on landing 1 ability to hit the rest. GA I personally thought was a healthier item since a tank respawning with 50% of their hp was kinda busted...

I don't know. I like the items, but I do see your point in that few people build them.

Minimac20001 votes

... read the item... You respawn with the higher of 700something hp or 30% of your max hp No tank is respawning with 50% hp

ZaneShadow said "was", keep that in mind.

Waaaaaay back at the start of League GA straight up revived people with 50% Max HP. However, ZaneShadow was likely referring to patch 7.9 where GA restored 50% of Base Health upon revival instead of a flat 700 or 30% Max HP.

Gameplay features that revolve around a "you can't have it all" sentiment are vastly deeper than these messed up hybrid stat sticks with absurd combinations of offense and defense. It's a braindead god-tier item on any AD champion late game. It's become so standard that not picking it up as your 5th or 6th item can leave you vulnerable to picks and 1v1's.

Make these items purely defensive again. Force damage dealers to trade off a little damage for survivability.

I have been saying that for years mate. Ever since like a year after the QSS upgrade was added.

Don't give them any fucking ideas. You say that as a joke, but we're all half laughing knowing the probability of them doing something just like that is unfortunately greater than 0%.

both AD and AP have an anti burst and an anti CC-to-death item.

for each they have one activatable one and one that is automatic.

ADs have the activatable Mercurial Scimitar (previously also a purely defensive item) to prevent being CCd to death, and the automatic GA which will save you but can be wasted.

APs have the activatable Zhonyas Hourglass (the only item on these lists which was never a defensive item) and the automatic Banshees, which will save you but can be wasted.

As you can see, they both have opposite items.

Changing them into offensive options was another contributor to the damage inflation the game has. They used to be purely a defensive option that you normal buy in the late game. It was a tradeoff for either more damage or having those great passive effects, now you get both.

Banshees is pretty bad compared to GA

novac37212 votes

I'd rather give them reduced adaptive damage. That way anyone can build them, but you still get AD/AP out of them.

The items would become traps or just not built until last because they’d delay your damage scaling too much.

No. A million times, no. I don't want especially GA to return to being a tank item. Having a Zac jump into the middle of your team with decent base damages and insane amounts of tankiness and basically forcing you to have to focus him only for him to have his passive and GA up was the single most toxic game play I've ever had to witness.

GA does not need to be a tank item again.
