Looking for Friends

Hey everyone! I’m extraordinarily new to League (started just a few days ago). I played Smite for a few seasons on PS4 before taking a good two years off and now that I have a PC I wanna play some LoL. I figured I just needed to get used to the controls of the game and I’d be pretty much good to go as most of my friends who have played both have all told me they fee Smite is a harder game. That being said, I am absolutely terrible so far.

I’m not sure if I just haven’t gotten used to the differences, if I am not comfortable with the controls, or if I even remember how to play properly. My friends are all 5-7 year veterans but don’t have the best patience and willingness to lose some casual games til I get the hang of it.

That leads me to my question: how should I go about practicing in-game with other players? I was a flexible player before swapping over and mainly was the ADC for my team comps, but I wanted to try something a bit simpler to get comfortable and have been trying to mid. Any and all tips on any roles would be appreciated but I am going to focus on being a better mid before I practice other roles, unless someone can suggest an easier role to pick up (was thinking maybe top but everyone in soloq goes top when I join).

Thanks for reading! TL;DR Newbie asking for tips on how to practice and get better

Here is a few tips.

  1. Play every champion on the free rotation in a bot game and read what they do. This seems tedious but the amount of times people lose a match simply because they have 0 clue what they do, is rediculous. Even older players are often like "wait, it does that?" (Not including all the additional random tidbits that can be said with various champion interactions).

  2. Farming and warding is key. You will not find it as important for now, but there is 2 things higher ranked people have that help them out.... good CS scores (creep scores, killing minions) so something that you can do as a warm up each day is going into a practice tool (via "make game", going to "custom" at the top, and then going to practice tool) and turning off experience and buying no items, then spend 10 minutes working on last hitting the minions. Good cs is roughly 80-100 cs in 10 minutes. This will have you at the absolute weakest state to farm with and if you can cs there, you can cs in game.

  3. If someone is being a jerk, mute them. Report if you feel they are being too rude.

  4. Dont mind losing a few matches while trying to learn a champ. You will be pitted against a wide variety of skill opponents. Some will be better than you, some will be worse. No matter what people might say, normals are for learning a champion. While bots is often the best place to FIRST TIME champions.... you cant get better at a champion against opponents.... if there is no opponents.

  5. Music is always good. League has some pretty good songs that was made for the worlds and different champions etc. Then there is parodies if you are into that, or just whatever your favorite music is.

This was extraordinarily informative, thank you! I never would have thought to practice CSing the way you described it. Everything else seems pretty simple and standard so I’ll try that out some more before hopping into player games. As for wards, where are common/optimal spots to keep an eye on aside from objectives? I started warding where I feel I would get ganked, but they don’t feel like they’re in great spots.

Well, there are quite a few ward videos for various things..... both for jungling as well as for in lane etc. Unfortunately and fortunately at the same time you came about a month before pre-season and so there will be many changes. Quite a few of those will be changes to the entire map and where warding is going to be best.

Principle stays the same though, and you have it down already of keeping an eye out for the jungler etc. Ill see if i can find some good videos when i get home and post them for you.

They are much more informational for supports, but does include things for everyone to understand as well. These are some warding guides, however they will be changed up for sure when the new map comes.

Yeah, good tips. I'd chime in to add. Just play the game a lot. You will eventually get the hang of it. There is no hurry and its more important to enjoy it. Good luck on the Rift!

Add me in-game and let's play. I'd love to help you out every now and then.

The best way to practice is against bots. There's also a few champs I would consider "training wheel" champs that teach you the basics and are very easy to play you'll learn what everyone does through experience so I recommend keeping your champ pool as small as possible

Okay, will add when I get on after work, thanks! I have a mic and discord if you prefer that over game chat!

I recommend using quick cast in the hotkey settings. It makes your abilities cast faster without you having to hold buttons for an ability. I have my QWER under quick cast+self cast.

Under player movement, you might want to practice with the player attack move click (I bound to "A"). It helps you attack enemies around where your mouse cursor is when you click the A key in my instance. It's better than right-clicking on enemies or minions because you might hit the ground and miss attacking a target.

I could play with you if you want to just add me.
