DAFQ are you on about?
A melee that isnt a tank or a juggernaut cant be strong lategame, it does just not work without breaking the champ.
Tanks, vary between somewhat slow to somewhat mobile but also very to extremely durable melee picks, they often bring crowd control and sometimes utility effects but pay for all this with lower damage, they are the last to get going.
Juggernauts, immobile melee picks, have a difficulty getting to their targets but bring immense damage when they do and are excellent even when facing multiple opponents, not as durable as tanks but more so than the divers......while juggernauts tend to be quite good in lane they often fall off for a while after and dont get going until they stack some levels and items but they get going before the tanks do.
And the divers are mobile melee picks, excelling at diving in and catching up to their targets and delivering pain split between burst and DPS, they pay for their combo of mobility and damage with lower durability comparatively, almost all of them are midgame specialists.
Assassins, extremely mobile and bursty fellows, capable of easily getting into a fight and on a target and delivering a great deal of damage very quickly but the price is being the most fragile melee class, but they are also the ones who power up first.
Skirmishers, often mobile or at least fast, deliver both high burst and high DPS while scaling well (mostly single target) as of currently but tend to be nearly as squishy as assassins however they have conditional survival tools which make them able to endure or avoid punishment while they work, but they pay for it with a weak early game and being rather fragile with their defensive tool down which makes lategame their forte when they have the shortest possible cooldowns and most items to support them.
Current irelia is supposed to be a diver, which means she might be a bit weak the first few levels but once she has abilities, and a item or two she instantly powerspikes before the juggernauts and tanks come online, a typical midgame diver.
And even a blind man would know that much, more so for the Aatrox rework.
A champ that gets rewarded for hitting enemies with a particular part of his small AOE ability? When is this the easiest? In lane, when enemies move predictably.
When is it the most difficult? Anytime after when they move freely, have higher speed and more mobility.
Aatrox rework was set in stone as a lanebully the moment his current Q was chosen.
