@Riot - Division Clamping: Another Perspective on the Promotion Series Debate

There has been some good discussion regarding Promotion Series lately and the promoted/demoted sagas, and there are good pros and cons with this. What I haven't seen much of in those discussions is talk about Division Clamping, which may well solve some of the frustration in those threads.

Division Promos are intense game-sets because people worked hard to get there and want to win those two games to get to the next Division.

  • Yes, people look up matches while loading and can see who's in a promo, but I doubt many people will then purposely troll so the person loses a promo.

  • What's more problematic is the recent and lasting lag/connectivity issues that can ruin a game and the rare issuance of Loss Forgiven as well as the general trolling and AFKs.

However, even through all this people do get through a series and get into the next Division, which is great, but it seems there could be more Division Clamping to keep you in that Division you qualified for.

  • It has been stated by Riot posts that they feel Promos are important to test that one truly deserves to be in the next Division, and I'll agree with that.

  • With that said, if you truly qualify for that next Division, then there should be more Division Clamping to help with lag/connectivity, trolling, and AFKs. I know there is a safety of a couple games when you promote, but once you get a win, or go up and down, you're in a position where if you now lose at 0 LP, you're probably going to get demoted.

Thus, if a Promotion Series is the standard for testing if you deserve to be in the next Division, then you should be better protected to stay in that Division, such as the protection one gets from Tier Demotion.

I know there will be an argument of MMR, but Riot has specifically stated a Promotion Series is a litmus of your skill to be in the next Division (or Tier). If that's so, then the promote/demote frustration can be alleviated with better clamping.

I don't believe this should be akin to Tier Demotion protection, but I do feel people would not have the frustration with a Promotion Series if they knew there would be better protection once they get through one. This would also make a Division Promotion Series feel like more of an accomplishment similar to a Tier Promotion Series rather than an obstacle they have a high chance of having to repeat due to issues outside of their skill.
