The surrender system is getting a bit dusty.

Hi everyone! I think we should think about improving the surrender system. it's here since the start and didn't change a bit. I don't expect a huge rework but at least some way to make it less intrusive. I'll start with a few idea that in my opinion are easy to implement and can only be beneficial :

-Once you vote allow to close the surrender tab. it's huge and is really distracting especially if it happens during a fight and stay here for a long time because people can't be bothered thinking about that when trying to hit & run.

-Add an option to automatically say no to surrender and stop the window from popping in. I very rarely surrender and I understand that some people don't want to continue a lost game, but I also don't want to lose a game because I'm distracted by that.

-At least make that window somewhat transparent, when a random surrender window pop out while there is no reason to, and 4 person say no but you die cause you didn't see the champion popping in the fog of war behind the surrender menu and were too distracted by the pop up to look at your map that's really annoying. it probably happen once or twice in a lifetime but still, considering I played way less game in my lifetime than the number of daily game played it must actually happen quite often. too often to be acceptable.

Now I have different ideas, they are not all compatible and they are all debatable but I think that would be great to change it a bit :

  1. color coding. I know riot make a lot of studies about that so I think they know more about it than me, but the color in the surrender vote are not neutral at all. having surrender in green in my opinion push people to surrender a bit more than they should. it might not be a noticeable change at an individual level but I'm sure there is a way to make it more neutral.

  2. Premades. I think premade should count as one vote, at least for premade of 4 (and if they are not in agreement their vote is decided by majority). I'm not sure about this change, it have some bad side effect especially on premade of people who doesn't know each other well. but it also stop premade from abusing the surrender. Loosing cause a guy in a premade of 4 is going to eat and they surrender so that he doesn't get ban for afk is a bit annoying.

  3. stopping a person from submiting multiple surrender vote in game. I could have placed this one in the first section but I guess it might be frustrating. anyway the benefits in my opinion are :

-if only one try to surrender he can't spam it and once the team have said no he have to accept the result.

-spamming surrender increase the likelyhood of people saying yes. I saw a lot games where someone spammed surrender and even though we were coming back the team still decided to surrender after a few time. it builds a mindset in which you already lost which isn't always the case.

-allow surrender vote to only happen when one more person decided it's ok to surrender, therefore making all vote usefull instead of having a vote every 2 minutes and having someone looking at surrender timer instead of drake and nashor timers.

  1. Don't say how much say yes and how much say no. I'm not sure about this one it might actually be quite negative and should be tested extensively, but knowing you almost surrendered probably have a different effect than knowing only one person did. i don't know if it would be positive or not.

Now if anyone got other ideas or want to talk about mine feel free to do it. I think my first part are really basic improvement that would probably also reduce frustration and toxicity.

ps : I already posted this but apparently it was in the wrong section so I'm putting it there!

I vote to remove the surrender system entirely

My recommended surrender spam fix:

After a surrender vote is declined, no new surrender vote may be called for three minutes. All players who voted "Yes" to surrender may not call a new vote.

So many times I've had a teammate spam surrender votes off cooldown even though three or four other players voted "No" to the last three votes they called. With this change, a new vote will only be called unless someone who previously felt they would rather play the game out changes their mind.

That's exactly what I proposed except I didn't ask to change the time limite. I think two minutes is ok, it could even be removed with this system.

well i didn't proposed to remove the chance of trying a surrender for every person saying yes because I thought it would be frustrating. but at least for those who tried.

This makes sense to me because if nobody who voted No (or didn't vote) has changed their mind, then the new vote is just going to fail anyway, so why bother having it?

Just get rid of the surrender system entirely.

Even if there is no hope of winning you can give it your all and die in glorious combat!

While I agree that surrendering is most of the time a bad thing, I don't think riot can afford to simply delete it, most people would be outraged by it. So we should simply work on making it better because not improving a system just because it shouldn't be there is the first place won't make it disappear ^^

Yeah because Riot is such a stranger to outrage right?

Come on man, they are pretty much fueled by it at this point.

If they want to remove it they'll do it, in the meantime i think improving it would be a great thing to do.
