The Colossus is NOT Galio

The purpose of a rework is to update the champion with a new kit while also keeping true to what made that champion unique or interesting in the first place.

Sion went from a weird place mechanically while being a zombie juggernaut thematically to being a straightforward tank with strong cc and survivablity while retaining his zombie juggernaut theme. Poppy went from a little yordle with a hammer thematically and a weird unbalanced kit to a heroic hammer wielding yordle that's also one of the best tanks in the game now. Taric retained the heal, stun and armor scaling of his kit while having it updated entirely and getting a new look and lore that could still be seen as true to Taric. Warwick was given new abilities that retained his ease of play and didn't change a single thing about his mechanical identity while expanding on his theme.

My point is every major rework since Sion has been done in a way that its easy to look at the champion and see what they were before, see how they've improved. They all have something mechanically or visually that ties them to what they were. Players can just glance at their new looks or kit and go "oh yeah, that's like their old kit/look."

Galio has NONE OF THAT.

Visually the only thing tying Galio and the Colossus together is that both are made of stone. Galio was a gargoyle statue, dark and twisted with an appearance meant to invoke dread or disgust. It may have gone against his theme of being a protector but historically gargoyles were MEANT to be like that and Galio followed that trend. The Colossus on the other hand is bright and polished. He doesn't even look like a gargoyle but rather like a strange man with an under-bite that also happens to have wings, a tail and clawed legs. I get that Demacia views themselves as like paragons of justice or the like but the new look goes against everything a gargoyle is meant to be. Calling him the Colossus was a smart move since he sure as hell is NOT a gargoyle.

Now lets turn to mechanically, and see that it once again** FAILS** to bring about the idea of Galio. The two most iconic things about Galio's kit were also the two things about him that were totally fine; his passive and his ult.

Scaling his damage with MR was unique and brought a lot of strategy to him. Do i go full damage and kill everyone quickly? Should I go full MR and be the unkillable anti-mage? Should I go a little of each and be strong enough to survive enemy burst while having enough damage to be a threat? It was fun and distinct from every other character in the game. We have 3 characters that scale with armor( Malphite Rammus Taric ) a couple characters that scale with HP (new Chogath and Vladimir ) but a champion that scales with MR is apparently not allowed? Why? Why take away the simplest and yet best part of his original kit?

His ultimate was the other ability that was fine as it was. A large AoE taunt that built into a massive burst of damage based on how much damage he just took. Even the people who had no idea what Galio's kit was still knew he had a huge AoE taunt that hurt. It was as iconic to the character as his passive and you've removed it in favor of a short range AoE taunt with damage reduction and a passive Malphite shield. Seriously? What was wrong with letting him keep the ult as his massive burst spell? Why did it have to change into a small tank spell?

In conclusion, we have a character that visually is** NOT** Galio, and mechanically is also NOT Galio. I'm not saying the Colossus is a bad character, I honestly think he looks fun to play. But this is NOT Galio. This has NOTHING to do with Galio. Please Riot, rename the Colossus as someone new and go back to making an updated Galio. This new guy brings nothing to the game that says Galio to me. He looks, and feels like a whole new champion, and not a whole new Galio. At the very least, give him back his MR scaling on ALL of his spells, not just his passive and damage reduction. Or make his ult taunt enemies rather than knock them up. This Colossus is NOT Galio.

From a concerned Galio fan Galio

P.S. Why do the Commando and Debonair skins look just as mechanical as Hextech? Enchanted looks like stone, as it should. Gatekeeper looks demonic, again as it should. And Hextech_ IS_ the machine so its fine. But why do Commando and Debonair look like a different colored robot just played dress-up? Shouldn't they also look like stone?

  • Anti Mage Magic resist heroic Protector gargoyle. with AoE Taunt.

Looks like Galio to me.

Galio was a gargoyle statue, dark and twisted with an appearance meant to invoke dread or disgust.

Guessing you didn't read his lore?

Scaling his damage with MR was unique

I agree, and they left it in his kit. he has MR scalings.

and brought a lot of strategy to him.

in what effing sense? all it really does is encourage him to stack MR. How is that strategic in any sense of the word?

What was wrong with letting him keep the ult as his massive burst spell? Why did it have to change into a small tank spell?

Riot has already gone on record. Tanks should be about tanking, not dealing damage. His new W keeps the original spirit of the old W and Ultimates while giving them more uptime and thus making him more useful, since Galio always had that issue of being significantly less useful unless he had his ultimate up. In this way, they preserve his identity while keeping it prevalent over everything else they added.

In conclusion, we have a character that visually is NOT Galio, and mechanically is also NOT Galio.

I suggest you do some research before jumping the gun like you are atm.

Only thing I really have a gripe about his his new Q (which is basically a combination of his old Q and E) has neither a slow or the speedboost gust of wind. :/ Im gonna miss the wind speed boost especially.

Ok i am just not seeing your argument here, to me he looks like and feels like galio, a very mobile version of him to be sure, but definitely galio.

Still as an AOE taunt (yes not the ult but that's mechanically close) and MR scaling (on passive, z, and ult).
