How does the ranking system work when you're going first time into your placement matches? Is your normal game mmr used as a your ranked mmr to scale you? How does it work for first time placements?

Your starting mmr is low-mid silver for ranked when you do ranked the first time ever, and then in following seasons it's a soft reset from your previous seasons mmr (roughly your previous seasons mmr averaged with the aforementioned low-mid silver mmr).

ok, and depending on you winning games, does your mmr get higher and therefore boosting your potential rank? for first time placements

Yes, your mmr is very sensitive during your first placement games, so if you're lucky and manage 10-0, it is possible to get placed directly into plat 5 (or at least it was in previous seasons). I believe you do need a degree of luck on top of that to just happen to get matched with relatively high mmr players as you go through your placements otherwise 10-0 might only net you gold 1 or so, but those first 10 games are quite influential on where you end up being placed at first.

I think the rule of thumb is that each game is roughly worth a division's worth of mmr, although that's only a very rough estimate.

If you use a premade (you're allowed to group with bronze/silver/golds as an unranked first time ranked player) that'll impact the average mmr of the games and then all bets are off depending on the MMR's of those you're with.
