The support champs are actually in a pretty good position right now. They new Keystone masteries have made them more effective, and the starting support items got a boost, especially
. The issue lies in how supports are treated. I main support and we get so much verbal abuse thrown at us. Pretty much every other game you run into:
a) ADCs who act like you're their own personal slave and complain if you have the nerve to help out someone else at all - expecting you to only use your support abilities on them regardless if its a late game teamfight and someone else needs the help more.
b) ADCs who die and blame you even when their death was their own fault. Ex. they went in when you had no mana or your spells were on cooldown (bonus points for complaining you didn't use your ult when it was on cooldown and special bonus points when you're not even level 6 yet) or they got themselves into a bad position where attempting to save them would lead to both of your deaths.
c) ADCs who harass you when you die a single time (being like 'gg shit support report (support player) for feeding' and continue going on and on about it instead of playing the game)
d) ADCs who don't follow up (say you used your cc on an enemy that got too close, or ult them so they can tank a turret or take out an enemy but they do nothing.)
e) The team expecting you to be the sole warder (even though you usually can only place 3 stealth wards and 1 vision ward) and then blame you when they die to a gank because they didn't ward their lane.
f) Raging when the support gets a kill and complains about kill stealing. I personally have the biggest issue with this one, because most of the time you're just trying to do your job (ex. using cc to stop them from running away) and happen to get the kill. And almost every time I think "okay they're low so I'll just back away so they don't bitch at me for KSing" either the enemy gets away, or the enemy gets a kill (or more) AND gets away.
g) If you're playing passively due to worries about the above happening, expect the ADC to yell at you for playing passively. And of course, bonus points when you play aggressively to please them and either a) die because they want you to go in at level 2 or b) kill the enemy and they complain about KSing or c) don't kill the enemy to try and avoid KS complaints and then they yell at you for not finishing them off.
As much as I love playing the role, it takes away the fun when you're being harassed every other game, and also takes away the fun when you're constantly worried about being harassed. It makes me not want to play the role sometimes even though I almost always play healer-types in every other multiplayer game. And yes I know, mute button, I have used it, but it doesn't remove the issue, and makes it so you might miss out of legitimate messages. And from my experience reporting does absolutely nothing.
Also, a relevant video from Sky Williams, despite being 2 years old, holds just as true today. (warning: may be offensive to some): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8N5yTdGhIU&ab_channel=SkyWilliams
Also another bonus: Like in the video, if you decide you won't stand for being treated that way and say, decide to support someone else, or go offense or something instead, prepare to be called a troll by the entire team and possibly reported. Fun times.

TL;DR: It's really an issue with how they're treated and not the support champs themselves.
