Syndra shuts down other champions and limits champion diversity.

I recently played a game as Zyra vs Syndra mid. Syndra outclassed me in every way with her abilities. Her ridiculous range made it impossible for me to poke and answer for her harass. Her mana costs seemed insignificant compared to mine. She happily spammed away her spells while if I tried to do the same I'd be quickly out of mana. There was barely anything I could do to stop her from snowballing.

This got me thinking. Syndra is similar to the old Lucian. She is very safe to play and you can pick her confidently knowing that very few champions can put up a fight against you. It's just stupid how many champions she easily shuts down. Anivia, Brand, Annie, Swaine, Zilean, Volibear(who's so weak right now practically any recently released champion can beat him), Udyr, Cassiopeia, and Ahri to name a few. The shoutcasters are always going on about how Syndra gets these amazing 2 or 3 man stuns in pro games when in reality it is very easy to do. When the enemy is chasing you, of course they're going to be in a straight line, and of course the carries are going to be grouped up together in small spaces like the jungle and river. A max range stun is worth praise for sure, but not a stun in the jungle where the enemy has very little room to dodge and very little time to react to a quick Q+E.

Syndra needs a nerf. I think her stun should be the focus. She has a knock-back, a stun, and a slow all put into her kit. Xerath has the same sort of thing going on, but at least his are moderately hard to hit skill shots. Syndra can place a ball wherever she wants and hit her stun practically on whim. Make her stun harder to hit by reducing its radius or range. Or limit her to only being able to grab minions or monsters. Make her abilities cost more or reduce her mana regeneration.

I also have an idea for all mages that share the similar archetype of long-range and lots of self-peel. Reduce their movement speeds. Make them worry more about their positioning. It's so frustrating to watch a Syndra just glide past your much harder to hit skill shots as a Zyra. I literally could not touch that Syndra at all and after she got her first kill I couldn't even farm.

yh its just like ziggs (I luv ziggs) its pokes for days in the laning phase so poking alot is just to safe.

but most long range mages have one weakness and that is a lack of mobility, if their cc misses then they will get caught and when caught they will die. but again Syndra can use some more weaknesses like higher mana costs and less range on her Q. plus Deathfire grasp has a longer cooldown now so that is a slight nerf to syndra.

Syndra's non-ultimate abilities are 100% skill shot. Additionally, her Q can be actively dodged if you have sufficient speed and reflexes. The following champion categorical abilities strongly counter her:

  1. Movement effects - e.g. free flashes, dashes, and move speed bonuses. She has a very hard time dealing with these because it makes her Q and W much harder to land
  2. Silence/Stuns - Syndra is very squishy and has no movement effect of her own. If she cannot push you away, she is dead. Her only means of escape is to stun you, then run away while trying to slow you with W's. If you have your own movement ability, though, you can catch and kill her.
  3. Long-Range Poke - Syndra has respectable range, but not extreme. Her stun is by far her longest range ability, but to poke or kill she must be much closer.
  4. Avoidance/Invulnerable effects - anything that removes champions from the field, blocks attacks, or otherwise can stop syndra's all-ins can be devastating to her.

Examples of mid-lane champions who give Syndra a hard time: Ahri, Viktor, Lux, Ziggs, Talon, Fizz, Zed, Tristana, Morgana, Karma, Yasuo (as long as yasuo utilizes his E intelligently and doesn't waste his W on Q's and W's)

Syndra has an easy time against champions who have at least some of:

  1. Require short/melee range to engage
  2. Require channeled abilities to kill
  3. Have no movement abilities of their own

Examples of Syndra-favored fights include Ryze, Twisted Fate, Anivia, Malzahar, Akali, Heimerdinger, Katarina (even though she has a free flash, kat is hard-countered by syndra due to her reliance on her ultimate and her vulnerability to harassment during laning phase)

Obviously my lists are not comprehensive, and some fights in each list can be easily swayed by skill, but in my opinion they are good examples.

Thank you for the comprehensive response, Nebuul. You helped show me that Syndra does have at least some weaknesses. And the rest of you are probably right in saying that Zyra is not good in mid-lane. But this is what really bothers me. When Zyra was released she was intended as a mid-laner. When she became too strong in the support role they destroyed both her mid-lane and support lane. Now she doesn't fit anywhere. This has happened to a lot of champions. So basically there are a bunch of champions in my pool that I paid good money for, but are pretty much unusable. That doesn't bother any of you? That there is a large section of the game that you paid for that is currently unplayable? It doesn't irk you that you can't just select any champion and win with skill anymore like in the old days of League? I just don't like not being able to confidently press that random button in champ select and instead being stuck with playing the same champions all the time. I want diversity.

Not many people play syndra or can play her well.

...Syndra's stun is harder to hit than Xerath's abilities. Sure, she can place the ball anywhere she wants, but Xerath just has to aim his skillshots, Syndra has to position herself and her ball and then aim them in order to get a stun off. Honestly I think your struggle was more to do with Zyra being a weaker mid laner than Syndra being too strong.

I have to agree with what someone else mentioned - I believe this is more a Zyra is not very strong mid than Syndra is too strong.

There is no doubt Syndra is a very strong laner and perhaps she does not have enough weaknesses to be considered perfectly balanced, but I would not say OP.

Why are you playing zyra mid? She was nerfed cause of her supporting was to strong and now she is not great in either role.

So you are trying to compare syndra with no mobility to lucain who is all about mobility. Not sure this example works.

Odds are you were playing the match up wrong.
