Why not a word filter that doesn't let you send rage chats?

We've all (or most of us pre/post hormonal boys) done it. We rage when our teams let us down and we use bad words. Thing is, in a game like league of legends, there is no, absolutely NO scenarios where hateful words should be sent in the chat. So my question is, why not a system that catches "rage words", or anything mean-spirited, and simply deletes what you typed when you hit enter.

benefits:

  1. no mean thing said
  2. would slowly teach toxic people: "wow, im wasting my time getting angry and typing mean things, the system is just blocking them anyway, maybe i'll start being a good person."

thoughts?

This would probably delete 90% of the english language.... We are a hateful people

Probably more if you linked it up to the system Riot just rolled out, which from the incriminating chat logs of some people leads you to believe everything is offensive to someone. And I mean stuff like "nice play" being listed as a ban reason.

well, it could start off very "top level" by which i mean only catch TRULY hateful words

And then the angry people will use less and less hateful words to convey their hate. People are creative, where as the lists of words used by what you're suggesting are not.

I think sarcasm and rudeness is better than terribly ignorant and hateful cusses...an improvement at least.

Perhaps it is, but it's nowhere near a long term solution, and if done incorrectly it can end up punishing more than just the hateful players. Stuff like this has to be taken very slowly to make sure it doesn't infringe on those who are doing nothing wrong.

Well, you see that's an opinion. Your personal reaction; that would be a better term for it. To demonstrate, I could very well find this very post of yours far more toxic, bringing an awful, condescending manner to this issue, than some other person's off-hand word choice, picked without any particular regard or meaning to them other than as a means to convey frustration. ...not mention that auto-deleting a message tends to produce a quite a few reactions in people, "calming" isn't one of them.

You see how there can be issues, yes?

racist, homophobic, and handicapped-insensitive words, to start.

So all colours would be censored.

There isn't an easy way to define a "rage" word. Going by what you are saying I'm assuming you want it to either block the whole chat or specific "rage" words. If it blocks the whole chat, if you slip in a "rage" word you can end up censoring yourself when you aren't doing anything negative, thereby "punishing" you. Also eventually people will probably find a way around it, making the censorship pointless. Also I have said negative things about my OWN gameplay in game to other people. It would frustrate me a LOT trying to communicate with my team if I keep getting censored and have to retype what I say over and over and over again. I'm already having a lot of problems playing(not being good enough), I don't need to have to fight with the chat system itself as well.

Also a positive towards the bans is that its a slap on the wrist. Maybe for you a censorship system would work well, but I feel getting a ban or some form of punishment is more of an immediate wake up call to individuals that tells them they need to work on their behavior if they want to continue playing LoL. Censorship imo doesn't really change them, it just prohibits them from saying what they want. Some may change for the better, but some won't and imo those who won't would be the worst offenders that need to change the most.

The words I had in mind would never be "slipped" in under any circumstances.

As you say, but you still haven't told me a filter/censorship system would be superior to the current two week minimum ban. Sure it allows them to play, but with the ban they can always just make a new account and play with that.

Or you could just....not rage in chat.

no it wouldn't work, because people will just make up new words to try to bypass the filter. Happens in every game.

Where you get a cancer trying to write ANYTHING in the chat.

No. We don't need any active chat filters.

Not hitting enter is an option. It's just a pain to dekete long messages especially since you cant use abilities while in chat

Hit escape instead of enter.

I once was writing a utility to monitor chat in the game and replace/rewrite messages with less hurtful ones.

My idea wasn't so much to completely filter out hostile words, but rather to replace them with something more amusing.

For example:

"omg noob" --> "You remind me of a hideous villain, who is missing knowledge of their parentage." "retard" -> "My good man, you are not unlike a giggling wart on a depraved gargoyle." "this team" -> "This shrivelled flock of inbred gnomes is undeserving of my leadership." "gg wp" -> "It was a glorious fight, however it is now over. It was a waste to have a "battle of skill" against an unarmed individual." "ks" -> "The ne'er-do-well has successfully stolen my opportunity to kill our foe, right from under my nose!"

I got as far as writing the generator to randomly invent the replacement terms, and the utility to hook into League's chat and monitor what you type, but never got around to properly analysing what you type - right now it only responds to specific keywords.

In any case, Riot changed the rules for third-party applications, and technically using the utility now would be against the terms of service, so I discontinued development.
