Masters Dissertation Conflict and Conflict Resolution Within League.

Well i took what i saw and created this dissertation so does that mean it belongs here(dunno where to post xD)

I wrote my masters dissertation Conflict and Conflict Resolution within League of Legends and now it's time to share my findings after receiving my degree.

(the doc is a .txt so notepad due to upload restrictions, just copy and paste it into a word .doc) Also due to upload restrictions all of the appendices (images) have been removed.

Enjoy it, Flame it, Troll it, Learn from it, Hate it... just do what WE league players do!

Interesting although i think you fundamentally went the wrong way with it. Might be because u took it from anthropology viewpont but i think the basic issues could be simply break down into 2 questions:

  1. why is moba so full of disagreements (a.k.a. why is it "toxic")?

  2. Solution.

In particular if you are interested in i'd recommend Lowell's newly appeared book about "dota" (NOTICE: the term dota here means the moba genre literally) specifically this part where he takes the issue of why moba is toxic:

I'll just quote my favourite part here:

So, you remember what we said about RTS games and custom maps? How a variety of game modes can accommodate players of differing needs and interests? Because the dota genre does not make these compelling or interesting choices, the sandbox becomes the five-on-five mode, where players of differing interests, intensity, and skill levels are forced into the same player pool. And, quite crucially, it is a game mode where teamwork is the chief barometer of success and failure. In order to learn the game, you must become a direct and significant burden on other players. Don’t know what items you should purchase? Don’t know how to play your character? Make the wrong play? You will cost your teammates the game and you will hear it from them, no matter what language they speak.

i agree but there's a lot more to it than those basic points that i would assume(hope to) most league players understand. But yes from an anthropological stand point it's much more than just cause and effect there are an unlimited amount of variables that influence each and every encounter within each and every game.

I was really suprised by the racism part. Objectively speaking really by not being able to see your opponent it really doesn't mark another border between ppl of different skin colours but what about the countries?:P

I mean on EUNE it is really frequent to troll the polish players (well they are sort of the "russians of dota") here simply because they are "polaks". Does that affect the behaviour generally or is an EUNE specification? (But i think it's more widespread generally within the elder US community be4 brasil and latin american servers existed, most of the USA players hated the "taco eaters" or "huekaisers".

EDIT: Giving a second thought most of the servers have this.

NA hates everything which isn't NA , EUW hates the spanish and french ppl mostly while EUNE has the "polaks". On russian server they hate everything which is not russia (Ukraine, Belorus etc) while the 2 asian server (i only have experience with garena tho) the SEA and Korean are the worst in this matter. SEA players hates even each other divided by countries and Korean are just outright racist towards everyone who is not korean but plays on their server.

Hey I am actually doing my Master's thesis on League. I am completing a Master's for Communication studies and I am looking at group communication and which type of 'positive' communication has a higher correlation of ranked won games. The two modes of communication I am looking at is positive CMC (chatting) and virtual interactions of the avatars. I would love to pick your brain on your topic and maybe discuss different ideas on how you wrote yours and how I can better my own. I sent you an invitation through league. Hope to hear back!
