[Champion Concept] Elle and Otto, The Tag Team Explorers (Champion Concept Contest Entry)
Hey everyone,
Here's a champion concept that's been bouncing around in my head for a while, finally got around to solidifying it. I'll have an explanation for my choices after the concept, hopefully it will help explain some of my decisions regarding this champion. I’m also adding a table of contents so it will be searchable by number. Let me know what you think, Thanks!

#1. Lore
“Otto! You call yourself and adventurer?” “Well…um, no…” “What was that? Hurry up!” “Yes, coming…” - Elle and Otto Elle was raised in a wealthy family in Bandle City, and overall had a very comfortable life, however she was sick of being forced to remain in her home, sick of the restrictions imposed on her. She would read constantly of the adventures of famous Yordles, one pair in particular caught her imagination. One day she decided to leave home, in search of this legendary couple and the expedition they were on. Her parents were reluctant, but Elle was determined; she set out, with a bag full of equipment her parents insisted she bring, her persistence in searching for the couple second only to her thirst for adventure. All of her searching had led her far from home, to one lone cabin far away from any civilization. Otto never cared much for the outdoors, though his parents made sure he knew everything about living in the wilderness. After months of preparation, Otto’s parents embarked on an epic expedition to chart the whole continent of Runeterra, inviting Otto to join them. Otto, however, was content to stay at home. Frustrated, his parents left Otto to tend to the house while they journeyed. All was quiet until, one day, Otto received a knock on the door. Elle burst through the cabin door, demanding to meet the legendary couple. Otto ran in fear of this wild Yordle invader, but try as he might, he could not out run her. Elle interrogated Otto on the whereabouts of his parents, to which he could only reply that they were away. Disinterested as he was with the journey, he had never paid attention to the map they took with them. Otto claimed that they would be back in a few years time, but Elle couldn’t possibly wait that long. Tying Otto and herself together to ensure that he wouldn’t escape, Elle and Otto set out to find the legendary adventurers, their travels, eventually, leading them to the Fields of Justice.

Elle is dressed in highly functional hiking gear, equipped with a Yordle-Tech machete designed to tear through foliage and fauna. She has pale skin and fierce violet eyes. Otto is dressed in many layers to accommodate differences in climate and weather during their travels. He prefers to carry a walking stick instead of a weapon. The two are tethered to one another with a yellow safety line.

#Passive:
- Trailblazer – Elle has an additional 25% vision radius of the area around her
- Tracing Steps – Otto retains vision of an area for an additional two seconds after leaving
- Both passives are active regardless of which character is being controlled.
#Q:
- Yordle-Tech Net Gun– Elle fires her Yordle-Tech Net Gun in target direction, dealing magic damage and slowing the first enemy hit for two seconds. Range: 850. Speed: 1000. Projectile Radius: 80. Damage: 80/130/180/230/280 (+100% AP). Slow: 30/35/40/45/50%. Cost: 65 Mana. Cooldown: 8 Seconds.
- Natural Explorer – Passive: Otto and Elle gain bonus move speed when leaving the base. This bonus is retained regardless of which character is being controlled.
Active: Otto tosses a torch at target 200-radius area, granting vision of the area and dealing magic damage and revealing enemies hit by the torch for 2 seconds. Bonus Move Speed: 1/2/3/4/5%. Range: 600. Projectile Speed: 600. Damage per second: 5/10/15/20/25 (+30% AP). Cost: 50 Mana. Cooldown: 15 Seconds.
#W:
- Hustle Up! – Elle shouts to hurry up, increasing her and Otto’s movement speed for 10 seconds. Speed Bonus: 12/14/16/18/20% (+5% per 100 AP). Cost: 45/50/55/60/65 Mana. Cooldown: 20 Seconds
- Campfire – Otto channels for 1 seconds and sets up a campfire at his location, granting vision of a 500 unit area that decays to 350 over two seconds. The campfire lasts for two minutes. After two seconds, enemies can destroy the fire by stepping on it, revealing them for three seconds and dealing magic damage over that time. Allied champions within 350 units of the fire receive bonus health regen. Otto can only place one campfire at a time. There is a range indicator for allied members to see the healing radius. Damage: 10/15/20/25/30 (+20% AP) damage per second. Max Damage: 30/45/60/75/90 (+20% AP) damage. Bonus Health Regen: 10/15/20/25/30 (+10% AP). Cost: 80/85/90/95/100 Mana. Cooldown: 60 seconds
#E:
- Yordle-Tech Snare - Elle tosses out a 300-diameter snare that arms after 0.5 seconds. The trap springs after 8 seconds or when an enemy Champion, minion, or neutral monster steps on the area, dealing magic damage and flinging them in the air and up to 100 units to the center of the trap for 1 second. This trap does double damage to monsters. Range: 500. Projectile Speed: 800. Damage: 30/40/50/60/70 (+30% AP). Damage to Monsters: 60/80/100/120/140 (+60% AP) Cost: 85/90/95/100/105 Mana. Cooldown: 40/38/36/34/32 Seconds
- Tether – Otto throws out a tether that attaches to the first terrain hit. Activating Tether again will pull Otto and Elle towards the terrain. The tether will break if Otto strays 1300 units away from the tether point. Range: 1000. Projectile Width: 30. Projectile Speed: 2000. Cost: 50 Mana. Cooldown: 22/21/20/19/18 Seconds
- NEW: Once tether attaches to terrain, there is a range indicator from the point of attachment that shows at what distance from the point of attachment that the tether will break. Tether will attach to the first terrain it contacts, however it is possible for tether to go through terrain, for example by using Thresh lantern, or being CC'ed over a wall. Activating tether will still pull Otto and Elle to the original point they are tethered to, through terrain, if necessary. They travel at a speed of 1500 upon reactivation of tether. The tether will still remain intact if the player switches to Elle, though it can only be reactivated as Otto. The distance for the tether to break is judged by Otto's distance from the tether, not Elle's, allowing for a slightly greater range if the player is controlling Elle.
#R:
- Teamwork – Passive: Elle and Otto are tethered at 250 range, and share all their stats. When Elle is active, they take reduced damage for attacks directed at Otto, and vice versa. They cannot be damaged twice by the same abilities; abilities that would have hit both deals only normal damage to the active character. The non-active character deals reduced damage with basic attacks, and will attack the same target as the active champion by default. The non-active champion can be controlled (default Alt+RMB), but will cancel their action if they stray farther than 300 range from the active champion. Units and abilities can pass between Elle and Otto without contacting them. Auras from items or abilities will apply to both characters. Teamwork is available at lvl 1 and can be increased at lvl 6/11/16 Active: The summoner switches control from Elle to Otto, or vice versa, granting a new set of abilities. Damage Reduction on Non-Active Character: 40/50/60/70%. Damage Dealth by Non-Active Character: 40/50/60/70% of Active Character’s Attacks. Cost: None. Cooldown: 8/7/6/5 Seconds.

#9. Creator Notes
Theme and Concept:
So this champion is meant to accomplish a few things.
- More Yordle representation. I know not everyone likes Yordles, but they’re a major race in the game and it’s been a while since a new Yordle was released.
- Riot has mentioned wanting to make a champion that has a more significant ‘pet’. I wanted to combine a form-change champion with this idea.
- Given that Riot is helping out support/utility junglers, I wanted to add another one into the mix. Most of these junglers have decent utility and tankiness, as well as a game-changing ult in most cases, so I wanted to add one that has a bit more early game damage or utility, by making them a form-change champion without a true ultimate, and more basic spells.
- I want to explore more serious/less lighthearted Yordle designs in the future, but because this concept revolves around the interplay of these two characters, I wanted to keep it fun. I also wanted to experiment with a champion that wasn’t in the League explicitly to fight; Elle and Otto are supposed to gain notoriety not because of their combat ability, but for their future fame as adventurers.
- Because they are explorers and not fighters, a lot of their kit, especially Otto’s, revolve around vision.
Balance and Kit Notes:
Elle and Otto are not fighters by nature, but Elle’s superior gear and personality coupled with Otto’s vast knowledge, coupled with their teamwork, gives them a great amount of utility and power to a team. I used Nunu as a reference for a disruptive utility jungler, and Jayce as a reference for a form-change champion. Elle and Otto have, for the most part, high mana costs and cooldowns on their abilities to prevent spamming of abilities, due to the fact that they have high damage, since there are two of them. They are supposed to use their abilities wisely, since they offer a lot of utility all around. Because they effectively have the hitbox of two champions with one healthbar, I gave them naturally high health and defense as sort of a combined total. They share one healthbar and all the same stats, so when you switch to the other character, everything stays the same. I wanted to have a longer cooldown between form changes since the non-active character takes reduced damage for the both of them, so as to not be able to abuse switching forms as a way to negate large amounts of damage over time. They also have lower base attack because there are two of them.
#10. Updates
7/21/14 - Updated mechanics of Tether, fixed some typos, added clarity element to their Passive, added intended role. Added AP Ratio and increased vision radius to Campfire (thanks to CharredSkull for the suggestion)
And that’s about it, Thanks for reading!
