Nautilus makes a splash in top lane

Riot··3 votes·64,069 views

The ocean’s biggest, baddest titan is making a splash across multiple regions -- from China’s LPL to Korea’s LCK to the North American and European LCS.

Nautilus has been no stranger to the competition, emerging as a highly contested support pick in this year’s Spring and Summer Splits. It shouldn’t come across as a surprise, considering the fact that he’s a crowd control machine. And with the right items, he becomes an impenetrable frontline force in the late game.

For example, once Nautilus picks up Righteous Glory, he can speed up his entire team, initiate on a squishy target with his ultimate Depth Charge (R), and peel for his carries as they melt down the opposition.

But he also has a large range on his Dredge Line (Q), which means he doesn’t always require a Righteous Glory or Flash in order to engage. One good Dredge Line coupled with a crowd control chain could mean the difference between life and death for a squishy target.

It only begs the question: why has the titan been trending in the top lane instead of support?

[[{"fid":"17574","view_mode":"article_image","fields":{"format":"article_image","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":"","field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":""},"tagName":"IMG","src":"http%3A//admin.prod.lolesports.com/s3/files/styles/article_image/public/Naut%2520Splash.jpg%3Fitok%3DdYmlLBK_","type":"media","attributes":{"class":"media-element file-article-image","height":"315","width":"700"}}]]

For starters, Nautilus’s kit works as both a top laner and support, which means he can be trouble in the pick and ban phase. With both engage and peel built into his kit, Nautilus can easily become a flex pick that won’t necessarily give away a team composition.

Picking Nautilus as a top laner also opens up another pick for powerful supports like Alistar, who's also been seeing the limelight because he can act as another form of engage and as secondary tank line in a team composition.

A Global Presence

In fact, having Nautilus in a solo lane, instead of in a duo lane, is simply efficient. It gives him valuable experience and farm so he can acquire earlier items. The quicker he becomes a tank, the more of an impact he can make in team fights.

No, the titan of the sea isn’t quite as powerful as other top laners throughout the laning phase. But buying items like Catalyst the Protector in lieu of a support item like Targon’s Brace will only give him more durability and sustainability through the laning phase. And with Teleport instead of Ignite, Nautilus can transform into a global presence early on in the game.

In KOO Tigers’s game against Longzhu IM in Week 6 of the LCK, Kyung Ho "Smeb" Song demonstrated the power of an early game Nautilus with only two items and a Teleport advantage.

Smeb Teleports down to the bot lane after IM’s mid laner, Tae Il “Frozen” Kim attempts a flank from behind. Not only is he able to effectively zone away IM’s bot lane, he’s able to help Jong In "Pray" Kim and Beom Hyeon "GorillA" Kang secure a kill on IM’s mid laner.

But how does he keep IM’s bot lane away? As a support, he might’ve had a Targon’s Brace and Sightstone. Yet as a top laner, he has a Catalyst the Protector and a Doran’s Ring. Those two items alone give Nautilus enough tankiness and damage output to zone away the opposition.

Catalyst gives Nautilus the sustain to stay in the top lane without giving up farm and experience. He becomes tanky enough to survive against Veigar and Sivir’s burst and the Doran’s Ring gives him enough magic damage to bully the duo away, rendering them helpless in the team fight.

With his chain of crowd control, and with Teleport as a summoner spell in lieu of Ignite, Nautilus has become a global presence to be reckoned with.

Engage and Disengage

Choosing Nautilus as a top laner also allows a level of synergy with the jungler that is hard to defend against. He synergizes well with almost any champion because of the sheer amount of crowd control built into his kit. And once he picks up a core item, he suddenly transforms into a irritating and unkillable tank.

For example, teams like Vici Gaming have been a fan of the Nautilus/Gragas combination. And although the team has found limited success due to a number of synergy issues plaguing them, it’s hard to ignore the amount of damage and crowd control chaining between the top-jungle duo.

Yes, the play might be overkill. But it’s the kind of play that also shows the potency of having Nautilus and Gragas on the same team. Even though they’re two champions that aren’t known for their damage output, they’re still able to shut down a very slippery Gnar just through their sheer amount of crowd control chaining.

In fact, the Nautilus/Gragas dynamic is beginning to find success in the NA LCS too. Because both champions have a number of abilities to engage and disengage built into their kit, they’re able to turn around a 4v5 team fight in their favor.

In Cloud9’s game against Team Liquid in Week 6, Alex "Xpecial" Chu is killed after a failed engage in a tower dive. Jae Hun "Fenix" Kim is subsequently ulted by Fizz, and Team Liquid understands that if they’re caught out by Cloud9, they’ll crumble.

So, Christian "IWillDominate" on Gragas throws down an Explosive Cask (R) in order to disengage while Diego "Quas" Ruiz on Nautilus uses Riptide (E) to peel for his carries.

But suddenly, there’s an opening for them. Because of the nature of Nautilus and Gragas' kit, Team Liquid is able to turn around reengage in another team fight. IWillDominate body slams right back into Cloud9 while Quas uses Depth Charge (R) to lock down Fizz on the backline.

With the amount of resources put on Quas' Nautilus, he’s able to sustain himself through the entire fight, even after initially disengaging. What follows is a spectacular tornado and Last Breath (R) combination by Fenix’s Yasuo to win the entire team fight.

The Impenetrable Nautilus

So why not pick Maokai? Why not pick another tanky top laner? After all, champions like the Twisted Treant have more sustain and damage output in the laning phase than the Titan of the Depths.

But in a meta that values tankiness, neither Maokai nor Nautilus are truly picked for their damage output or sustain after the laning phase. The two champions are picked in order to stand in the front line, soak up damage and engage on enemy carries while peeling for their own teammates.

[[{"fid":"17575","view_mode":"article_image","fields":{"format":"article_image","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":"","field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":""},"tagName":"IMG","src":"http%3A//admin.prod.lolesports.com/s3/files/styles/article_image/public/Nautilus_Astronaut_0.jpg%3Fitok%3D8DQ8B339","type":"media","attributes":{"class":"media-element file-article-image","height":"315","style":"color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;","width":"700"}}]]

Other top laners like Gnar, Irelia, and Maokai might provide an easier laning phase. But the tradeoff is the sheer amount of crowd control chaining and synergy with other champions that Nautilus has.

Nautilus provides lockdown on carries and becomes integral in his contribution in late game as an impenetrable fortress.

As Joshua "Jatt" Leesman once said, "The good thing about Nautilus top is that you have Nautilus on your team."

How do you know how long ago THEY started playing it on their alts, smurfs, or even on their main? Maybe they've been working on it for months too. The pros are people too, they play the game. They're just more informed and thus more likely to make SMART decisions so their decisions can generally be trusted.

implying those kids are extremely smart... they just spend huge amounts of time on the game, practically most of their time... skill doesn't create new metas, smart people with smart ideas do... and then these LCS guys with 0 education and 0 life skills other than LoL come in and show their skill with some new meta and suddenly it's ok...

before anyone says "hurr durr that's what they do in sports too" ... yeah... and there's nothing impressive about doing something extremely well if you're doing it 24/7... at least not to me... I'm impressed when I see people who enjoy their life in many different ways, growing smart and strong and playing LoL casually... and then they manage to play it amazingly well and they understand it... these guys are nothing but moneymaking machines for Rito... I'm sorry for my rant but it's just facts... with my opinion on them.

No I didn't imply they were smart. I said they were MORE INFORMED. Which is factual BECAUSE THEY HAVE FREAKING ANALYSTS HELPING INFORM THEM.

They're entertainment is what they are. But they're also EXTREMELY well informed because they have far more resources than we do. It is perfectly logical. And trying to downplay it and say 'oh I did it first' is ridiculous because you did it for fun when it probably wasn't ideal. They did it because it IS ideal now.

There's nothing wrong with either approach either... but trying to claim you started something because you did it for fun is silly. And it's overplaying your own importance.

Vuka7 votes

You do have a point, but I disagree with what you said about normal players creating new metas...

Yeah, LCS guys play it when it's ideal, of course, but I hate that Riot makes it sound like it's never been done successfully before.

And people do need to understand that more than 2/3 of LoL players are ranked below gold... and plat is less than 5%... and that's just ranked players, not to mention the unranked ones. The whole GAME is different for normal people and for LCS... I think that people don't realize that they can't just do what they see in LCS, beucase it's a completely different enviroment, even if they pull it off perfectly it might not work. On the other hand, Rito has to realize that too and stop pushing LCS hypes and metas like they're something new. I know I know, this is eune.lolesports and this is SUPPOSED to be about LCS, but these things are tacitly assumed.... man I don't know what I'm even trying to say... xD TL;DR

LoL =/= LCS

My cousin who is a newb figured out Naut Top is a beast idea. I remember he said "can i use Naut Top? He has to be good later in the game after i get a good item, right?"

i told him "YES HE IS! DO IT!" he then proceeded to wreck while i was watching his match as i enjoyed a meal. Best meal i had, not b/c it was the best food ever, but b/c my cousin did good and even when he made a minor mistake was able to quickly turn it around thanks to how tanky Naut is once he gets a core item or two and that ult.

I remember when i started playing, Naut Top was not really a big deal, in fact it was not uncommon. Same with Naut Supp, it was not uncommon at all, even before the S5 Tanky Meta, but now after a pro does it, it become "part of the meta" and accepted by all (before S5, if i had a Naut Supp i was happy while most others seemed to complain about that "he isn't a supp").

Then again, the pros play on a whole different level and therefore when they use a specific champ they "discover" a new meta if it works for them in competitive play... even though it might have been used or done by other great players who are not "pro" or by the casuals or newbs.

Kind of like Blitz Top or Thresh Top, those champs can be built to deal a lot of damage while being pretty tanky, and ppl still complain "how can you not kill a supp?" Only for them to walk in all cocky and get wrecked. Shoot, if im against a Riven Top, sometimes i like to go yolo and get Leona to cc the fudge out of a no skill champ like Riven and make them regret their tower dive.

I played blitz top a long time ago and it seemed pretty good but i don't like playing rank due to all the people who make choosing a champion a constraint rather then try and work together with the choices in heroes people make...the tank/ap/adc/jung/supp format seems to blanket the entire game...boy what diversity there :/

GRiiM2 votes

I totally agree with what you are saying, but I don't agree that Riven is a "no-skill" champion. Her combos and successfully micromanaging her basic attacks within her combos can be fairly hard to pull off. Yeah she does a ton of damage and can snowball games really hard, but she can just as easily fall off in a downward spiral being completely useless to her team just as hard. If you fuck up on her combo once, you can be easily punished and can easily loose the game on that one fuck up.

On top of all of that, she has a somewhat overloaded kit with a stun, knock-up, shield, basic attack steroid, total of two gap-closers (not including her 3 charges within her Q), a huge ass shield, and an ultimate that gives her extra damage over all and has a ranged execute when activate. That is a lot to say, enough to say her kit is way more complex than Garen or Katarina. Now those are no-skill champions!

Vuka7 votes

I logged in just to upvote this because it's SO TRUE... But I'll use this chance to say that there's one more thing that really gets on my nerves.... When some of these LCS dudes that spend all their lives doing nothing but LoL try some weird champion in a weird way and they do extremelly well, Rito SUPPORTS THE HYPE and then you have millions of kids playings Lee Sin and Yasuo, thinking they're extremely OP... never mind the fact that Lee Sin has one of the lowest winrates in the game... please PLEASE don't support the LCS-related meta hype, or meta hypes of any kind... let it evolve naturally... for the people by the people...(approved by Teemo)... SELL1820SKINS4IP11 votes

Truth, LCS brainwashes people into being afraid to try new things and find niche advantages. Those that stick to what we have found to work get flamed until someone on a team does it, then your a noob if you don't do it :p Speaks volumes about the player demographic they have here.

Maxiemoo3 votes

I disagree. The meta in LCS is multitudes different than any solo-q or ranked 5's that you play (unless you're in some challenger team) and people that try to replicate what they see in LCS often fail, because their games are nothing like the average players. They have impeccably good communication, decision making/shot calling is much easier as they're almost always on the same page and have strategies that they all work together on to try and win games. If you find some niche pick or 'hidden op' that you want to play, play it. If you try to replicate team compositions and strategies that they do in LCS then you're probably going to fail, because the LCS and ranked queues are so completely different that it's a bad idea to try and copy them. Yes, there are times where champions are both good in solo-q and lcs (such as Gragas, who i previously had something like a 70% win rate with pre-nerfs) but that doesn't mean every strategy and champion and play style and build should be copied. More often that not, it's better to copy the higher elo players and what they do in solo-q rather than in LCS.

THE KILLER GUY14 votes

Guys, guys, this isn't about everyday League. It's ABOUT the LCS. Nowhere in this article does it say that Nautilus top was invented by LCS players. Yes, it's about changes in a certain meta; but it's not the same meta we talk about in solo queue champ select lobbies.

This is about the LCS META. I mean for fuck's sake, this site is called LOLESPORTS. Why would their articles reference bronze 2 players like Blairblack when this website is dedicated to what goes on in LOLESPORTS (hence the URL LOLESPORTS.COM)?

Also, nobody gives a shit if you played support/top nautilus two years ago. Obviously it wasn't a good kind of innovation at the time if you're still bronze. You probably didn't even read the entire article because it doesn't point to any one individual as the inventor of nautilus top/support.

You think you're innovative like the pros. Maybe you are. You think you make an impact on the ever-evolving meta of League of Legends. Maybe you do. Unfortunately, nobody cares. That isn't even what this article or any other Lolesports article is about. Nobody gets paid for being innovative in picks and bans. So maybe you should spend less energy trying to look cool and more trying to get good at the game if you're this passionate about receiving credit where you think it's due.

TL;DR: GET OVER YOURSELVES. Lolesports writes about Lolesports. Who the hell would have thought they wouldn't research what people are doing in bronze?

Nautilus has been my favorite champ since s4, when I first started playing (yes, I'm new). I'm really happy to see him being played all over the map now! Just yesterday I saw him in the jungle, too (where I originally started playing him). I think with the tank meta we have now, Nautilus should be a first pick for any team if they want that sort of team comp!
