6 thoughts going into Playoffs -- "I like C9 fans because their response to their team’s collapse last week was to simply say, 'Same.'"

Not since the Battle of Endor have we seen so many TIEs break. After a grueling final day to end the regular season, the 2018 NA LCS Spring Split enters its do-or-die playoff stage. Six teams enter for a chance to represent the NA LCS in Europe at the Mid-Season Invitational. Which team shall bear unreasonable expectations? Here’s this week’s 6 thoughts:

1 to 100During Ocean’s Eleven’s climax where shit really hits the fan, a swat team rolls in guns blazing. It looks like the good (bad?) guys are about to get caught. But then the dust settles and bam! There’s a twist -- they’d faked the raid by dressing up as the SWAT team and taking the money themselves. That’s the level of heist we saw from 100T in the second half of the split, where they went 9-1 to finish in 1st to end the regular season. Cody Sun is played by Matt Damon (the up-and-coming but talented kid). Clooney is Aphromoo (the leader). Pitt is Meteos (the right hand man). Ryu is Ryu. And Cheadle is Ssumday (explosives). This team is just clicking really well together at the moment -- their team fighting in particular has been very impressive thanks in large part to Meteos’ initiations. In the Best of 5 scenario, they’ll be able to play around any of their lanes, which should give them a ton of flexibility.

Bye Bye ByeSince starting the split 9-1, FOX has gone 3-6 and limped into the bye. But it feels more like your local frat boys karaoking N’Sync’s “Bye Bye Bye” than JT. They did however play substitutes in their final week, which makes it difficult to gauge their current form. Maybe things are dire and they’re just trying something new. Maybe they’re so confident in their starting five that they wanted to give the substitutes some more stage experience. The trend of their results, though, is decidedly downwards. Some of this is tied to their bot lane underperforming -- Altec and Adrian have a week off to figure out what’s going on. I think the slide will ultimately be a good kick in the butt for them -- it’s good to know what the team atmosphere is like during struggles. Being able to handle adversity is critical in a Best of 5, and we’ll finally see this team’s mental fortitude be put to the test.

A familiar feelingIf you have a magic 8-ball, grab it and ask, “Will TSM make Finals again?” Then shake it. It will read, “TSMMMM!” Even during their struggles, I thought they were the team I most wanted to avoid in the playoffs. I think they generally hold a massive mental advantage over teams. Like, if you’ve ever tried shooting a basketball over someone who was just much taller than you, it doesn’t matter if you might actually be better. It’s still going to mess with your head. That’s the kind of pressure I feel TSM exerts -- especially in playoff scenarios. Coupled with the fact that their team is actually playing well right now and bam, you’ve got a terrifying monster. MikeYeung is finally coming to terms with the kind of role he needs to play on TSM -- which is, to me, one that involves aggressive positioning early to give his laners info on where the enemy jungler might be. And in team fights, he needs to play more of a frontline role than he did on carries like Nidalee with P1. His filling of TSM’s need for more of an “entry frag” has elevated their play. To me, TSM is the odds-on favorite to win the split.

FourthniteDid Sinbad play a genie in the movie Shazaam in the 90s? Was there enough room on the door for Jack? Is the LCS scripted? I’m not going to answer these questions. But here we are. Franchising. The format reverted. A Tesla shot into space. And Team Liquid still in 4th place. I do like that TL had a strong comeback win against C9 last weekend. It wasn’t a massive comeback, but they’ve flopped in games like that all season. That’s the kind of win they can look back on in the future when they’re down to use as a source of inspiration. Just like how you might be less inclined to forfeit at 20 minutes if you just had a come-from-behind win in the previous game. Doublelift was also in excellent form last week -- there were moments where I was like, “Oh shit, maybe he’s the best player in the world after all.” TL’s chances of 3-0ing this week are just as likely as their chances of going 0-3. Let’s see which version shows up.

SameI like C9 fans a lot because their response to their team’s collapse last week was to simply say, “Same.” You know how people crack jokes to mask their deep, underlying sadness? That’s all y’all C9 fans. There is good news, though -- C9 will avoid TSM until the Finals if they can get that far. The problem for them at the moment is the whole getting that far part. I think a lot of C9’s issues can be fixed in a Best-of-5 set, though -- they seem to get sloppy at times either because of arrogance or because they lack focus. Both of those things are tempered in a longer set. I think the top lane matchup will be the most interesting -- the wily veteran vs. the hot rookie. I want to see if Impact can get in Licorice’s head over the set, or if Licorice can rise to the occasion.

Underdog?CG is in the same position as Envy was in to end last split -- the 6th seed team looking uphill. Most people are writing them off already, and it’s not really their fault. This has been a consistently strong team all season, and they even 2-1ed TSM in the regular season. So I do wonder how much of their underdog status is tied to their play and how much of it is tied to TSM’s reputation. Maybe they should stream a few games with Drake to increase perceptions of their legitimacy. It has been a month since these teams last played, though, and TSM has been on an upswing ever since. I don’t think LirA can exploit MikeYeung much this time around, which means they’ll need Febiven to really pop off. Clutch’s strength has been their tempered mid game, though, and if they can get there, then I do think they have a shot at winning team fights. They’re not going to be an easy out.

TEAM LIQUID

CLOUD9
(5)

Liquid is coming off a 2-0 week against C9 (including the tiebreaker), which would give most fan bases some form of relief going into Saturday. But the Liquid fan base is sitting there thinking, “Things went well… too well…” And there’s definitely reason to worry -- they may be the least consistent team out of any of the playoffs teams. The drop-off from their highs to their lows is enough to pop your ears. The bright side for them is two-fold. Firstly, they have to win in order to get 4th. The prophecy is on their side. Second, Doublelift is still a monster (and there’s definitely no historical precedence for him choking in playoffs). On the flip side, C9 fans get to see Jensen adapt to his opponent over an extended set. Pobelter is a very sturdy player, but I don’t know if he can stand up to Jensen consistently enough. While it’s not as critical of a matchup as the top lane, it still has the potential to flip the match in C9’s favor. This will be a very close set if both teams show up -- but I still give C9 a 55/45 advantage here.

MATCH PREVIEW #2

TSM

CLUTCH GAMING
(6)

This is a matchup where if CG ends up winning, people will look back and say, “Well, they did 2-1 them in the regular season.” They’ll say all the signs were there. LirA is still better than MikeYeung. Febiven is one of the few mid laners in the world that actually threatens Bjergsen in lane. And their side lanes actually performed well all split. That’s the revisionist. And maybe those signs have some merit. But I’ve followed sports for long enough to know that regular season performances don’t translate into the playoffs. Ask Eastern Conference teams in the NBA about LeBron’s regular season. While you might be able to stand up to a player for one game, the better of the two typically prevails in a longer set. They adapt quicker. They have more versatility in champion pool and playstyle. And for TSM -- I think they have better lanes in top and bottom, and Bjergsen is playing well enough to at the very least go even with Febiven -- who is typically the core of CG’s win condition. I think this may be a split too early for CG, and while I don’t think the two teams are vastly different in skill-level, a TSM loss would be a massive upset.

I'll be rooting for #C9WIN because I never give up on my team, but I have to be honest... not a lot of confidence in that one. Going to be a great match either way.

Ya know I am getting pretty tired of the blatant TSM favoritism. TSM has looked good in the back half of the split. But the first place team in the League right now handed TSM one of their few defeats and has looked almost invincible in the back half of the split.

And its not like Meteos and Moo lack any experience at beating TSM in finals, given that both played for teams that have done just that.

RiotMean Mister Kien16 votes

Last week someone accused me of having CLG favoritism (and being anti-TSM). :P Meteos hasn't won a title in four years, and Aphromoo has been two years. I agree that they have experience and that they look really good right now, and if you want to peg them as your favorite, then that's totally respectable. I'm just not betting against TSM given their recent form and their recent history.

Zhugan5 votes

How about 100 Thieves recent history of beating TSM in a game in which they never really lost the lead and TSM (at least once that I can think of) got flustered enough that they actively threw while also already losing? That Mithy/Bjergsen feed moment was exactly what desperate looks like.

Or maybe talk about how 100T lost 1 game in the back half of the split while TSM lost 2 (including one to 100T). Or maybe reference that, in games in which TSM doesn't get Syndra or Gangplank this split, they are something like 4-7.

And, if you are gonna reference all the 'history' that Bjergsen and crew have, maybe reference that TSM has lost 4 times in that history and 100% of those loses were delivered by teams led by Aphromoo or Meteos. Or that MikeYeung has less playoff experience than almost anyone else in all of the NA playoffs?

Given their recent form and recent history, they have managed to beat almost everything they've come across... Except for the team currently sitting in 1st Place; which is a team that has also had better recent form and recent history.

That one game vs 100T was pretty much entirely because of the brilliant poppy pick by 100T to completely shut down TSM's team comp. Giving credit where credit is due, this is 100% to 100T's credit. But in a Bo5 things like that can be addressed and adjusted in the next game's pick ban so it is hard to say which team is stronger in a full series. Thus, it is probably the safer bet to go with the more experienced players (Zven Mithy 4 straight EU finals, Bjerg Hauntzer 4 straight NA finals). You can't say someone has TSM bias because of that.

TrollFan011 votes

Add in Zven/Mithy and Bjerg/Hauntzer won 3 out of those 4 final appearances for a total of 6 titles.

Zhugan1 votes

So, the credit is to 100T for winning pick/ban hard and then executing on that won pick/ban, but for some reason think they are incapable of doing that again when they have done that for more or less the entire back half of the split? That's... interesting...

And, sure, they won.

Zven and Mithy won because they were on the best team in a weak region. They had very little competition that didn't come directly from any source other than Fnatic, and even then only when Rekkles was on form.

TSM has won as much as it has, honestly, because C9 are choke artists, CLG his wildly inconsistent, and who else was really competing in NA for the past two years or so? Immortals? They choked hard than C9, and that's saying something.

Also... fun stat time: Aphromoo has never failed to get a team to finals if they made playoffs. Meteos has never lost a final when he made finals. I'll take a history of 100% ratios over a history as hit and miss as TSM's.

WhiteFireKirin7 votes

damn why u so triggered bro, this isnt a NA vs Eu article.

lvl 9 alakazam7 votes

It wont let me reply to your other post so i'll reply to this one.

First of all your Aphromoo/Meteos stats are incorrect. This is the first split CLG has not made playoffs and there have been plenty of finals that Aphromoo has not been in. Thus, there have been plenty of playoffs that Aphromoo didn't lead his team to finals when they made playoffs.

Meteos lost to TSM in the NA LCS finals in 2016 Summer, 2015 Spring, and 2014 Summer.

Like I said, its hard to say which team is stronger and by saying one team (in this case TSM) is the favorite doesn't mean that 100T is guaranteed to lose. No one is saying that 100T can't win or that they are incapable of winning again. It's just an unknown. 100T drafted really well in a b01 game. If poppy wasn't picked, would they have still won vs TSM's dive comp? Maybe, maybe not. Who knows. You may think they would have won and I may think they would have lost that doesn't mean the other team has no chance. No one is saying that.

Favorites is >50% chance. It isn't 100%. It could be 51%.

Showbiz1 votes

I'm not exactly sure where your "fun stat time" come from but Meteos and c9 Lost in the finals in 2016 and aphromoo had never missed playoffs but has missed a final?

Also, statistics say your wrong. Most of these readers can attest as your downvotes are piling up lol... You will see when playoffs finish out on why people take into account TSM's previous success in NA.

I wouldn't sweat it. Part of covering a league is getting accused of being biased against everyone's favorite team. I know I'm guilty of it with my favorite team. I'll read the other 5 (or 9) comments and nod along, even laugh at some of them, but then with my favorite team I always think you're underestimating them. And sometimes you are. But sometimes you're not.

I think you might have been a bit strong in saying "Odds on" favorite by the technical definition of something having a >50% chance of happening. Honestly, just cause it requires winning three consecutive best of fives against teams of roughly similar skill, I'd say the odds of winning the split for all teams are somewhere between 8% and 16% for #3-6, and right around 25% for 100T and EF (only two series). There was 1 game separating all six teams in the standings, there's not really the data to justify giving teams massively different win probabilities. Under those circumstances, there are no odds on favorites to win the split.

But that's boring math writing, and not at all entertaining to read. Which is why I'm in the comments section.

Ready to bet against TSM now, given their recent history of losing in playoffs against CG? lol no disrespect, just saying TSM isn't as good as anyone thinks, nor have they ever been since Summer 2016 when they went to worlds and...oh that's right TSM is still TSM. Nvm.

I'm not going to argue with anyone here, I will simply just state my predictions and let time tell if I'm right. Predicting the number of games in each series is difficult (especially if its two good teams playing) but I will take my best guess. Quarterfinals: TSM beats CG 3-0 and TL beats C9 3-2 Semifinals: TSM beats Echo Fox 3-0 and 100 thieves beat TL 3-2 Finals: TSM beats 100 thieves 3-1

I tried this last week lol.. some of my predictions were... off. I did not see the C9 collapse coming or TL suddenly learning how to play as a team again. However I did get the 2-0 for 100T and TSM correct. Who are aslo my favorites for the finals.

Quarters - TSM 3 CG 0 TL 2 C9 3 I think CG has been picked apart by the better teams as the split has progressed. And TL still seems to inconsistent for me to bet on them in an extended set.

Semis - TSM 3 EF 1 100T 3 C9 1 I don't think EF can play without having Huni hard carry them. I figure this gets them 1 game. 100T showed that they were a force to be reckoned with and I expect them to handle a struggling C9 well (unless of course this team changes is trajectory)

Finals - TSM 3 100T 2 History really does repeat. I watched all the games over the weekend and I had to admit while 100T looked solid, they played 2 games against subs on a struggling team. I like thier aggressive playstyle and Prolly has been a coach I have enjoyed for a long time. But TSM just looks like they are improving at a rapid rate and if that continues into finals, they aren't losing.

Replying here in response to a comment further down. Are you just gonna ignore the 2014 summer playoffs? Aphromoo played for CLG who made the playoffs but lost in the first round. Meteos played for C9, who made the finals and lost to TSM. What I'm saying here is, Aphromoo has not gotten to finals every time he has made playoffs, and Meteos has not won every finals he has played in. I don't know where you got your stats, but 100 Thieves does not have a 100% probability of making it to the finals/winning finals. You can say whatever you want about TSM choking at Worlds, but one thing they do pretty consistently is make NA LCS Finals (which they HAVE done 100%). That is an actual stat. Here's another one: TSM has won 6/10 of all NA LCS Finals. History supports TSM more than it does Aphromoo or Meteos. Not saying they won't win, but if you're going to bring stats/history into the equation, maybe actually do some basic research to back up your claims.

TSM/CG will be fun. LirA is better than MY amd Feb and Bjerg are pretty much even. It's just the top and bot lanes that go too far in TSM's favor. Back in summer 2013 CLG 4-0'd TSM and then got 2-0'd by them in thw finals.

Speaking of summer 2013 that was the last time we had so many tie-breakers. Bjergsen was there too and that's why TSM won. Experience with that ;)

See well that is the author's problem. Everyone knows to ask the Magic Conch.

Even during their struggles, I thought they were the team I most wanted to avoid in the playoffs. I think they generally hold a massive mental advantage over teams.

Reminds me of Charlie Weis saying his teams always have a schematic advantage. Yeah that wasn't true either.

Like, if you’ve ever tried shooting a basketball over someone who was just much taller than you, it doesn’t matter if you might actually be better. It’s still going to mess with your head.

It's called a hook shot. Learn it. Make it accurate, and it can't be blocked. A fade works well too.

That’s the kind of pressure I feel TSM exerts -- especially in playoff scenarios. Coupled with the fact that their team is actually playing well right now and bam, you’ve got a terrifying monster.

Clutch was sure terrified weren't they?

To me, TSM is the odds-on favorite to win the split

Based on history of championships, I see a pattern. TSM-C9-C9-TSM-TSM-CLG-CLG-TSM-TSM-TSM-??? Tsm will make finals but lose, TL will get 4th and we'll see a new LCS champion.

TSM over CG 3-0 and TSM over FOX 3-1. On the other side, TL over C9 3-2. 100T over TL 3-2. 3rd place match-up, FOX over TL 3-2. I have 100T beating TSM 3-2.

Side note I have 100T winning summer split as well over TSM.

Unfortunately, TL would have to lose to Echo Fox to get fourth which isn't possible to me. I have them placing third.
