FPX and the luck of the draw

FPX got the easiest group.
FPX got one of the easiest quarterfinals (Fanatic, only SKT got an easier one).
FPX played IG in the semis. They handily owned them in LPL, so it was not a problem.
FPX played G2 in the finals. The only challenge that could have been. It wasn't.......
FPX did not play a single game against a Korean team in Worlds.

Of course, it's the Korean's fault not advancing in the knockout stages, but I feel that FPX was not really challenged due to the luck of their draw. We will never know.....

I feel the FPX main luck was that IG knocked out Griffin.

Those 3 form a triangle of love, each beating eachother. Griffin and G2 are the only teams that could beat FPX and even then we got craps and afk jankos.

Tarzan/Chovy can match or even outperform Tian/Doinb. Gimgoon is not terribly gonna stomp on Sword. Viper is a super ADC and he can play the standard adcs perfectly.

I can why someone could think that GRF matches well into FPX.

(I am not saying griffin would easily beat FPX, I am saying IG with theshy and rookie had big advantages over GRF that FPX wouldn't have)

FPX was a really fun team to watch in knockouts, I am happy they won, even if G2 shat the bed in the finals

What makes you think Chovy/Tarzan can out perform them? DoinB has been said to be the worst midlaner the entire tournament, but was the last one standing. Tarzan is good, but have you fucking seen Tian? Like ever?

Grif got stomped. They always get stomped in a bo5. I like the team, but I don't see why people are saying FPX got lucky. If anything they got lucky to lose to IG before FPX put them in their place for reals.

They may have what was considered the dream draw, but in no way was the run sweep of the hands easy until the end. Going down the line:

Their group stage definitely had their games of caution. They were convincing, not dominant.
Even I'll agree that Fnatic had the worst performance of the 5th-8th bunch. But that just comes with taking on the opposition ahead of you. In fact, should Splyce had won that tiebreaker and the draw was the same, that'd be FPX vs SKT and SPY vs FNC. But that's more hypothetical.
The H/H on the season between FPX and IG was 1-1 before their semis encounter with both previous series going the full 3 games. And they never met in a playoff picture following upset losses from JDG and LNG. "Handily owned" is hardly the term to use here, especially given recency that IG was the only loss FPX suffered in the summer.
Regardless of outcome, a tournament favorite still won in the end.
There shouldn't be an asterisk on the World championship that has to indicate you have to beat a Korean team to be considered such. That and if the Korean teams were as deserving of the challenge, they'd have made it further...or Splyce would have won the tiebreaker and the draw was the same. More hypothetical though

The thing that makes their group draw so good, is that they didn't have to scrim/prepare specifically for ANY of their group opponents. They could be scrimming Bo5 SINCE WORLDS PLAY INS Stage, while FNC for example had to be preparing SPECIFICALLY for RNG and SKT, until the entirety of the group stage was over.

FPX had the luxury of time on their hands. AND OF COURSE the luxury of showing almost NOTHING of their true potential in group stage. I think that really let them practice drafting A LOT more than other teams. Yes they didn't know exactly who they would need to face in knockouts, but they had an idea of what teams would trouble them potentially, they had the time to perfect their drafts against the 3 potentially 4 teams that even had a chance to beat them in the first place. Also, they obviously would have a good draft vs IG being in the same region.

Worthy champions don't get me wrong, I'm glad they won it over any other eastern team. But not the undisputed best team in the world like IG was for last year's championship, when you just couldn't see any team beating them at the time. If FPX was more of a known entity and their weaknesses exposed more, I can see them losing to many Korean teams, IG and maybe even Eu. I am talking about going forwards to MSI, LPL etc.
