All-Star 2017 Group Draft

With Worlds 2017 wrapped up, it’s time to celebrate the best players and regions at the 2017 All-Star Event! As you may have heard, we’ve made some changes to the event since last year. Let’s start with teams and groupings!

How did teams get grouped?

To create the two groups for the tournament bracket, our All-Star Coaches from each region created power rankings of all other teams competing in the All-Star tournament. These rankings were then used to create a group draft where the teams from each region place their highest ranked opponent into the group opposite of themselves. This continued down the line of teams until all eight teams were assigned into either Group A or Group B.

Based upon their victory at Worlds, the LCK took 1st seed and was placed in Group A. LCK picked LPL as the strongest remaining team, making them the first team in Group B. In response, LPL placed EU into Group A. EU continued their rivalry with NA, placing them into Group B, followed by LMS into A and GPL into Group B. To round out the groups, TCL was placed into group A and CBLoL into Group B.

Additional Tourney Information

With LCK, EU, LMS and TCL in Group A, and LPL, NA, GPL and CBLoL in Group B, all teams will be playing a single round robin group stage, with the top two teams from each group advancing to a Bo3 Semifinals, followed by a Bo5 Finals.

Because people take name recognition over quality of player. It's why Mike was taken over Lira, why "potential retirees" are constantly taken (xpeke, dyrus, rekkles this year), and why the competition itself is hard to take seriously. If you want to watch the best players in the world compete against eachother, watch worlds. If you don't, then watch this.

I can kinda see why Mike was taken over LirA or others. He had some flashy carry games as a rookie. Teams and fans always tend to focus on that, or the vets they know well.

This time though, Olleh was even talked about as MVP, was voted first team Support by a landslide...but not all Star? Kinda goes to underscore how crappy casual fans suck and ruin it for hardcore fans.

Well, it isn't just that, but a few of the all-stars don't even make sense. Although Hauntzer did things that made him look good at worlds, he'd often put himself at a massive disadvantage doing so (I remember seeing an interview, think it may have been thorin and LS discussing TSM where LS talked about a play where Hauntzer TP's to a lane to get 15 cs, overextends and get collapsed on/dies only to see his team take a baron in the meantime, where if he had just waited like 30 seconds he could've saved his TP/not died/still had the same CS). It's stuff like this that makes me wish they'd do two ballots: one for the casual/"non-intelligent" viewers, and another for the people like me who enjoy analytics and digging through the raw data.

Xpeke Destroyed people when he played at All Stars last time. Rekkles signed with Fnatic for three more years and is easily the best ADC in eu.

So, sorry sir. you're wrong on both counts there. You are correct that people value name recognition over quality, But xPeke is the best mid laner EU has ever, or is ever likely to, produce.

Xpeke played maokai mid into faker's zed, and was taken so non-seriously that faker literally let him farm near him in full vision before killing him as zed. If your idea of "destroyed" is playing like a bottom-tier LCS player, then yes, he definitely did that.

Also, Rekkles signed with Fnatic AFTER the all star votes were tallied up, not before, so I'm right on both accounts.

By the way, this is not Team ICE Vs Team FIRE, this time every region is playing only to represent their own region like in MSI, it's not the same format than recent All Star tournaments in 2015-2016.

It seems people still thinks this All Star will have the same format than the 2015-2016 version and that's why they're saying "Group A already won".

Those are 2 groups which will play against the respective teams from their own group, then top 2 teams from every group will advance to semifinals and play against the other top two team from group B, thus, for example, in semifinals LCK and another team will advance and play against LPL and another team from group B.

NA is not in the same team than CBLoL and GPL, they have to play against those regions, same for LCK, they have to play against EU, LMS and TCL in their own group stage first. There are no longer allied regions, it's every All Star team playing only for their own region.

Still unsure why this fun end of the year thing was changed to something serious. I thought that this event helped show that even the pros can just play a fun/silly game, such as all for one.
