Fnatic dodges Jinx bullet vs. ahq, earns No. 1 seed in Group B

Riot··4 votes·31,906 views

If you thought Fnatic's Fabian “Febiven” Diepstraten had harsh words for Cloud9 when asked by Sjokz on-air to predict the outcome of the final match of the Worlds 2015 Group Stage, you can rest in the knowledge that he’s just as ruthless when assessing his own team’s performance. Despite having just left the stage after clinching the No. 1 seed in Group B, Fnatic’s mid laner was despondent, using the adjective “bad” eight times over the course of our interview, averaging 1 BPM (‘bad’s per minute). Nevertheless, his team managed to pull out a thrilling win in its final game against Taiwan’s ahq e-Sports Club -- but triumph was donated, not earned.

“We should’ve lost this game,” says Febiven. “They could’ve just ended the game if they wanted to. They could have gotten two or three Barons for free. Next week if we play like this then we’re probably going to lose if the [opponent] is better.”

[[{"fid":"20198","view_mode":"centered","fields":{"format":"centered","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":"","field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":""},"tagName":"IMG","src":"http%3A//riot-web-cdn.s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/lolesports/s3fs-public/styles/centered/public/21904334538_863ea0b596_k.jpg%3Fitok%3DdhNjPBPm","type":"media","attributes":{"class":"media-element file-centered"}}]]

He’s not wrong. When ahq took the hot-headed and completely unnecessary team fight at 48 minutes that threw the game, Fnatic’s base looked like downtown Tokyo in the wake of a Godzilla temper tantrum. With two Inhibitors down, super minions pushed into Fnatic's base like belligerent shoppers streaming through the doors of a Wal-Mart on Black Friday after hearing rumours they could get a shiny blue Nexus for 75% off retail price.

Chun-An "AN" Chou's scary 12/4/4 Jinx had nearly single-handedly broken Fnatic’s spine. All ahq had to do was huddle safely on the opposite side of the map, spamming team-flair and dance emotes while they waited for the Victory animation to trigger. Winions could likely have closed out the game unaided. Fortunately, despite being down, Fnatic had the presence of mind needed to slap down ahq’s haphazard engage, ace them, and finish the game in a single heart-in-throat counter-push. The spectating French audience leaped to its feet, waving Fnatic flags and screaming uncontrollably in support of the Europeans.

“We knew that we were the better team, but we drafted poorly because we were overconfident,” says Febiven, who sounds pretty damn confident. “I was overconfident because I knew that I was a better player than Westdoor. So I decided to take the [LeBlanc vs. Zed] skill matchup instead of a farm-heavy mage. And our bot lane got a bit behind so it was extremely hard and our attitude got so bad in this game so the communication was bad and our decision-making was bad.”

What does bad in-game communication look like for Fnatic?

“Everyone is calling different stuff because everyone is frustrated,” says Febiven. “We all do whatever we want. If something goes bad, then it goes more bad. For me, I did some really bad things this game, which I normally don’t do if I’m in an optimal mental state. When I jumped into the top lane at the second tower where I got one-shot, I don’t know why I did that. It just starts because something goes wrong and then communication is negative. And then it gets to everyone’s head and everyone feels desperate, or like they have to do something. And then bad things happen.”

[[{"fid":"20199","view_mode":"centered","fields":{"format":"centered","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":"","field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":""},"tagName":"IMG","src":"http%3A//admin.prod.lolesports.com/s3/files/styles/centered/public/22077079512_4d10f47fc1_k.jpg%3Fitok%3DbpiETKyC","type":"media","attributes":{"class":"media-element file-centered"}}]]

Europe’s top seed going into Worlds 2015 see-sawed back and forth between bad and badass during the Group Stage, but they made the clutch plays when it mattered. In the game against ahq, Febiven pulled off a godlike Baron steal, which is no mean feat on a champ like LeBlanc, who has to throw herself into harm’s way with Distortion and can’t rely on a hail-mary snipe from outside the pit.

Febiven remains hopeful that they’ve gotten the jitters out of their system and will be stronger going into the Knockout Stage. Our interview took place just prior to the Quarterfinals draw, in which Fnatic got matched up against China’s Edward Gaming for their next test. (Febiven told us he was hoping for Origen or KOO Tigers.)

[[{"fid":"20200","view_mode":"centered","fields":{"format":"centered","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":"","field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":""},"tagName":"IMG","src":"http%3A//admin.prod.lolesports.com/s3/files/styles/centered/public/21466722584_15630e8473_k.jpg%3Fitok%3DftJAqQae","type":"media","attributes":{"class":"media-element file-centered"}}]]

“I hope we get one of the weaker teams,” he says, “because then of course it will be easier for us to win and go through. Because I want to travel the world more. I want to play everywhere. We have to beat every team so it’s going to be extremely hard.”

Febiven and Fnatic have a guaranteed trip to London. Whether his squad is still in the race when the competition moves on to Brussels and Berlin later in the month, however, will depend on how bad they want it.

You can see Fnatic play in their Quarterfinal match against Edward Gaming on Saturday, October 17 at 3:00 PM CEST / 14:00 BST / 6:00 AM PT.

Make sure to tune into the first match of the Quarterfinals when Origen takes on the Flash Wolves on Thursday, October 15 at 17:00 BST, 18:00 CEST, or 9:00 AM PT.

Man, of all teams why EDG? But if they win I belive they will be able to take either KT or KOO. So, win this quarterfinal, grow stronger, "easly" win the semi and try to surprise who ever gets to the final on the other end (most likly SKT, but if OG makes it... FNC vs OG in the Worlds final... one can dream) XD

Jangbolsal2 votes

Fnatic lost to AHQ and Cloud 9. Dont think they can beat KT either. EDG and KT.. half and half

Amagda3 votes

Fanatic also beat AHQ and Cloud 9, what's you're point, that they can lose a best of 1 just like every team in the world?

Jangbolsal1 votes

it means that they are that shaky. Did SKT lose a game? Fnatic were terrible in the group stage. they almost lost the 2nd game against AHQ too. Don't get me wrong I do like Fnatic. Im just disappointed by their performance. You fanboys should really think of the games. KT looked much stronger when just looking at the group stage performance. KT only lost once and just destroyed LGD two times OG once TSM once. THey were shaky in one game against TSM, but SKT was shaky against H2K as well. Still both of them won, while fnatic lost

ShadowFiend8124 votes

And kt lost to Origen and almost to the 1-5 TSM. EDG lost to SKT pretty handily and were on the brink of losing to BKT. Overall China was overhyped for worlds and really aren't that good. It would surprise me if EDG made finals let alone semis

PenguinSebs2 votes

That happened before, and EDG ended up defeating SKT in the MSI finals so I am not going to judge just on one match. That said I am rooting for Fnatic to win worlds.

Kendorra1 votes

True, i believe EDG excells at BO5, but so does FNC, Should be a great Matchup

Earl Eulrich3 votes

I think AHQ actually will have a good shot at beating SKT - they´re play is not hugly different from Fnatic when they´re at their best and Fnatic almost managed to take down SKT at MSI...if SKT underestimates them only a second they´ll be in big trouble fast. i hope we´ll see and LMS vs EU final...

LOVE ALARM2 votes

Are u on crack first off skt will make every teams play look ugly it's just a fact edg is still good and better than fnc skt made them look bad and 2nd off skt won't underestimate shit and skt will most likely run a perfect tournament ur being way too unrealistic

Bomberjack1 votes

You clearly havent watched enough competitive LoL to think SKT will run a perfect tournament, yet alone win worlds at all. Assuming facts based on MSI or how the group stage played out is pointless and dumb, every team improved at MSI, and barely any team showed their full potential during the group stage. SKT wont win worlds, they will get dumpstered again by a resurging EDG. Just like at MSI.

TheLustyEgirl3 votes

but, edg wil lose to fnatic... :P

ShadowFiend8121 votes

Problem with saying EDG is good... That game against BKT really tells differently no team should be losing that badly against BKT ever

Earl Eulrich2 votes

i beg to differ...BKT really played to the very best of their abilities that game and deserve a lot of respect for that + it takes an amazing team to make a comeback from beingthat far down that early, even if it´s "onlY" vs BKT. Still, with AmazingJ instead of Koro they now have a weak point in their dteam, sth they really haven´t had all season long.

Geez if you're going to argument please go to Google Translate to make it look well, because the only think you did was make me cringe and think you're an SKT fanboy.

lol Looking at fakers faker >_< Zed heres a story on how tradegy struck one sad peaceful night "on a warm night a febiven pulled up to a faker AND 1V1 BLASTED HIM!!!!!!" HAHAHAHAHAHAHA Once again this will happen and i bet this dude will say "i was rooting for fnatic to win from the start" now im coming off basis which is true ive seen fakers games and truthfully i dont think faker is in the top 5 of best players period not just at worlds but the whole LCS watching him play is like seeing a 2 year old throw a fit it looks bad and sloppy but it always seems to work,he wont have that same luck against fnatic or Origen say what you want against xpekex but the man is a record of just how much one person can improve and to be perfectly clear i have AHQ 3-1 i feel faker will out shine mid however the bot lane will over take them

LOVE ALARM2 votes

And ur stupid if u think this skt team is anywhere near there level at msi there group stage was perfect they had 4 mistakes through out 6 games every other team had 25+

TsukiSora1 votes

If you think skt are going to make a clean run then I have a feeling you're wrong. In my opinion I think this will be very like MSI SKT have been winning too much against worse teams. I think the same thing is going to happen to them that happened to fnatic at the summer split. They beat EDG when EDG played shockingly bad in groups and beat H2K and BKT, 2 teams which honestly had little to no chance in this tournament. I think when it comes down to it SKT will either face EDG or maybe, maybe fnatic, if they improve a lot on the mistakes they are going back to making. Also I think KT are good but if fnatic beat EDG I think, assuming they stay on top of their game, they should win and the same with EDG. And in this final I think either team will have showed a lot of improvement as they both had shocking starts to the tournament and will improve on the mistakes they made, whereas SKT may become too use to winning and underestimate them. Before you reply with hate I would like to say, I know SKT are good and this shouldn't happen to them quite honestly, but it has happened to them before. It happened to fnatic in the summer split, I think it could also happen here

kafooey1 votes

I don't think SKT are going to have too much of a problem if they get Bang on the right adc. He is really good in his own right and there are a lot of mid picks that faker plays, so I don't think they can ban out faker. Thus, if they have bang and faker on good champions, I think they have a really good shot. Teamwork wise, it's really hard to out micro SKT because, well each individual player knows exactly how to handle each situation. The only chance that teams have of beating SKT is to have good defensive wards, offensive wards, and outnumber SKT wherever you fight. Otherwise if it's a 3v3,2v2,4v4, SKT generally pick the right champions for winning on even ground, and all their comps are well-oriented around teamfights, more so than certain teams.

Andersonthegreat2 votes

I agree, they were doing a lot better than most of the teams in MSI

SpookyPowa1 votes

Well, that would be really unlikely that they beat SKT, but this BO5 will be great to judge SKT strength when it comes to long series against tougher opponents.

LOVE ALARM2 votes

Stop dreaming lol

TsukiSora1 votes

Im not, Fnatic destroyed EDG in the semis, they should beat Koo Tigers and if they play the way they did against EDG they have a really good chance of taking it off SKT. Also before we even get to that, I honestly think Origen are going to challenge SKT. I can't honestly say they are going to beat them but I do think they will pop this bubble of invulnerability that SKT seem to think they're in.

thizzzu7 votes

Your an idiot, that's like asking when is TSM going to get rid of dyrus (before he announced his retirement ofc). NA teams aren't like your chinese teams just picking up koreans to carry them, they keep their original members. The moment some one starts having a hard time all the haters come out of the shadows and preach oh he was always so bad, look at season 3 and season 4. Then tell me balls sucks.

korean dog5 votes

lol wut? Chinese teams are in no way letting Koreans carry them. At MSI it was the performance of Clearlove and Meiko that won them the set against SKT. Both Pawn and Deft had mediocre performances. And this year China had more Koreans on their roster than any other season in League of Legends and 2 of the teams did not make it out of groups which is the first time in CN lol history which shows you that just because you have Koreans on your team doesnt mean you will succeed. China, in the last few years, have always been superior to NA and EU even without Koreans. OMG beat a top Korean team Najin by clean sweeping them 3-0. When was the last time an NA team beat a Korean team in a BO5? NEVER. Just face the facts, China, even without Koreans are way superior to any team in North America. Your TSM is carried by Bjergson, a EU mid laner by the way. Everyone else on that team is ****

Hebja4 votes

TSM original toplaner was TheRainMan.

DeathscytheDuo5 votes

I also dont think balls sucks (funny enough, last week he was a hero for his Penta, now the hate comes back. Would like to see them haters getting a penta at worlds). Your "let koreans carry" point does suck though, even TSM got their very own share of koreans in a way, with Lustboy on support and Loco as coach, and they also got rid of players that didnt do well or didnt mix with the team anymore, on the other hand it still was Pawn who made it possible for EDG to win MSI, bc he kicked fakers a** in the final game, when he went for his leblanc after they obviously gave it to him, Pawns Morgana negated him completely. Honestly i dont get why everyone always has to hate about the regions .-. even if NA did better or EU did worse or the Wildcards actually do well (btw CLG has their very own Kabum now, thats actually funny i think :P ), i think we all can agree that this years worlds overall was way closer than the last 2 worlds and thats great, so stop hating players for their performance because they still are WAAAAY better than you'll ever be :D I mean what would you think if like half a million ppl said you suck bc u had a bad day or something, would that make you feel good? The ones you call suckers still are players, real ppl so think about that before you hate on them.

Supermagne4 votes

Funny to read that comment when you know that Bjergsen, coming from EU, is the only one to carry TSM...

SpookyPowa1 votes

I completely agree with DeathscytheDuo. NA is at least as carried as China is by korean imports. Foreign imports in general are more than a third of the total players in NA LCS.

How come Jax hasn't been picked to counter Darius if he has Good defense vs both AP and AD due to his ultimate, dodge, and q escape? His E dodges Darius Q. and his W. Which negates the effectiveness of his passive. Jax at lvl 6 wins vs Darius lvl 6. Jax can rush sheen whereas Darius is tunneled into either going tanky or losing if he goes phage. Because Phage is a lot weaker than Sheen. If jax starts cloth 5 then that negates all parts of Darius's damage because They took the magic damage off of dariuses passive. Jax scales with both Ap and AD and he can go 3-4 tank items. I feel like they do not remember what a jax does when he gets ahead. This is the least META worlds that I've seen, it has had a lot of variation. PLEASE GUYS pull out the jax! He is such a heavy snowballer against someone like Darius who has no built in escapes! Jax has 350 movespeed, and Darius has 340! Everything says for you guys to try jax as a counter pick! He could even build abyssal scepter for the team! Lmfao Jax has one of the highest skill caps of any champion. Huni would annihilate if he practiced it. Did you know jax aa animation swings like a pendulum sometimes? So right when you land damage with the AA you can press w and it will land its damage really fast because it will go backwards on the same trajectory! only sometimes though. If you have sheen and you REACTIVATE the stun instead of letting it time out, it will give you an extra sheen proc! So many things that these pros are not utilizing.

ShadowMagiq1 votes

i completely agree although I'm not a pro player so maybe they know something we dont. I played jax almost exclusively in the top lane few weeks back to go up ladder ranking and his early game harrass with the w aa reset is insane. plus the e that allows him to outtrade and stun. After level 6, i can come back with a vamp scepter and time my aa's properly so one harrass easily took 1/3 of my opponent's hp bar (aa +r proc, w reset, e stun) and after you get cutless/botrk and phage, you can stick to them really well and keep aa'ing with the passive, which is one of the best in the game. Since darius kinda needs to stay in the fight and stick to you, i feel like jax with 6stacks on passive and lifesteal should be able to easily 1v1 darius. On top of everything, jax scales incredibly well into the late game, much better than darius i believe since his dmg is more aa based and his e will render darius useless

I really think he should tone down his arrogance. I mean you can trashtalk about players BEFORE the game, heats up the game and brings some tension, but disrespecting your enemies after a win is just wrong and unsportsmanlike.
