Reinventing LCS
As a huge regular (I hate to use that term, but I couldn't think of anything else) sports fan, and also a huge LoL fan, the perfect meshing of these two things for me is esports. Although traditional (there's a better word) sports may be a bit more entertaining then LCS to the more casual LoL player like me, LCS is a great product and gets me nearly as excited as a good Wings game.
But these two hobbies of mine got me thinking of how the format of LCS could advance to be similar to, say, the NBA. The NBA has 30 teams in two conferences with an 82 game regular season. So I was wondering why not expand LCS play to thirty teams? Or if that's not reasonable, combine the leagues? LPL, EU, NA, LCK and so on. As much as we all try to push the fact that that LCS is a sport, there are obvious differences. For example, why do the players have to be in the same building as each other? They don't have to physically interact, and it is an online game anyway. Set up stadiums for fans to watch a big screen of the match without having the players actually be IN the building together, or to compromise for those who think that is an important aspect of the experience, you could have thee "home" team in the stadium with the fans, but the opponents not. This would remedy the need of having teams traveling all over the world (in the case of a worldwide league combining all the leagues) to play a game that stresses the ability to play against people all over the world. I don't know the how the semantics of this would work with the different servers and such, so PLEASE call me out if I'm just being ignorant on this. But does this not seem like a good idea to everyone else? It would make esports seem even more credible in the eyes of traditional sports fans.
Another thing that is odd to me is why so few games? Games take no toll on the body physically so you could in theory play as many games as the year would allow, let alone 82 as most leagues do. This isn't the NFL where 16 games is justified, this is a video game and there are only 18 or so games a split? I dunno, it just seems to me like the league would run better under a regime like the NBA, NHL, or MLB. More credibility, and even better matchups. NA teams would be regularly playing teams from China, Korea, Europe. The rivalries would be ten times as good with that amount of frequency of matches.
So basically my theories boil down to either a worldwide league where either A: there's a stadium for each team involved in the match, but the two teams are NOT in the same arena. This would possibly change for playoffs/championship B: Teams fly all over the world to be in the same arena as each other, which seems totally unreasonable. The other idea is just a bigger NA league, using all the ideas discussed above. Thirty for one region may be hard to field and make it relatively even in skill level, though. That's the main issue.
Remember that these are just ideas. Feel free to call me out on anything that doesn't make sense. Do you like the format the LCS is run under currently? Do you see ways to improve? Do you like any of my ideas?! Comment below and thanks for reading!
