All Star Event Isn't as Exciting

Just wanted to get an opinion on the All Star Event from the community.

Personally, I think that Riot has made the All Star event less fun to watch. Now, it feels like another serious international competition between the regions. However, perhaps it is too soon after worlds. I understand that Riot wants to add more international competition, but I feel like that All Star Event isn't the place to do this.

I think what made the event so fun was the game modes. There was competition, but it was friendly competition. I loved watching assassin mode. And who doesn't love One For All, when everyone picked Blitzcrank in what ended as a giant clown fiesta. Tandem mode was also very interesting, trying to watch two pros play together on one computer. Not only did we have these game modes, we also had serious 5v5 matches between the regions on top of these game modes.

Also, I don't know why Riot decreased the participants in the 1v1 tournament. Having everyone in it was very fun, as upsets happen.

What are your thoughts on these changes?

I do miss the All-Stars competition being a more relaxed event with crazy game modes. Its not that the event is awful now, its just sad that it had to replace the zany festival-like they used to have in its place. Its no longer as unique as it used to be.

i mean with eu lcs being ass fucked by riot another time and thus being totally useless... its basically NAEUKR vs kr china bla. and yea riot kinda made it "serious" which to me is stupid. but oh well... tbh im not excited for any tournaments this year. eu lcs is out completely. tsm got the best roster ever so its their chance to finally shine. and oh well. korea is korea lol

The last time there was a ASE of tournament style caliber was Shanghai 2013, and back then not only was it mid-season but they also had to compete for their spot rather than be voted in instantly. One of the reasons for it being less fun is very potentially due to the matter that it's been so long since the last real tournament "dream team" ASE which was only the first one mentioned above. 2014 had a team invite tournament (becoming MSI in the following years) and a Fire vs Ice invitational challenge. 2015 and 2016 took that Fire and Ice competition and made it what it was.

The timespan is pretty okay, especially given how brief it is. At least it's not like Kespa Cup 2015 and 2016 where LCK teams suffered from burnout or even IEM where invites struggled in midst of team acquisition phases. Here, if an invited player wants to rep, they can. If not, just pass it down.

The gamemodes and challenges made it chaos but I will be a bit nitpicky here: if you weren't a fan way back then, you probably wouldn't remember the Pick 10 Challenge, Hexakill, Role Specific duels, or 2v2 bouts (always gonna remember Doublelife/Madlift).

All truth, ASE has not necessarily had a consistency with what to do each year. But I know it's not as boring as expecting the same thing year after year. This year it seems they took the roots of Shanghai and enhanced on that system with a more competitive format using the vote to invite formula. The 1v1 tournament doesn't need to be too massive either. With more regions and more players representing it's fair to at least have an even bracket number to work off of (not easy to make - let alone broadcast - a 32 to 40-player tournament bracket).

And this is all just to talk about the event. I could care less about the region wars or player dramas that the fanbase is interested in. I just want the competition.

All Stars turned from the fun event of the year, to a Mini Worlds without the level, the importance or the glamour of Worlds. If it wasn't for the casters, the whole thing would have been absolutely boring.
