2014 World Final heads to Seoul’s World Cup Stadium

Back in November, we shared our excitement that the 2014 Worlds Final would be hosted in South Korea. Fast forward a few months, and we've got even more news to share as we kick off the final countdown to this season's finale in Seoul. We're thrilled to announce that we're going to be hosting the 2014 World Final on October 19th at Sangam Stadium. This stadium is most famous as the venue of the 2002 FIFA World Cup, and since then has played host to some of the best sporting and entertainment events in South Korea. Bringing the action to so many passionate and dedicated fans requires an awesome venue - and we look forward to welcoming more than ever before in this world-class sports arena. Of course, no end goal is complete without the journey. This year, we're taking Worlds on the road and hosting group stages in Taipei and Singapore in September. The action will then move on to a quarter final showdown in Busan, Korea in October before the victorious teams emerge to battle it out in Seoul (home of defending champions SKT T1 K) in the semifinals and final. We're looking forward to making our first stop in some of these regions and bringing the most talented League of Legends competitors in the world directly to local fans. Fueling the epic journey through Taiwan, Singapore and Korea will be our brand new event format that now includes a sixteen team group stage arranged from our global leagues. Three top teams from NA, EU, Korea, and China will join two teams from Taiwan and SEA and two wild card winners to fight on the global battlefield. The teams will be placed into four groups and battle it out in the group stages before the top two teams from each group move on to the quarter-finals. We’re also increasing the number of wild card teams that participate from all around the world. Latin America will face off against Brazil at the NA LCS Regional Final, while Oceania, CIS and Turkey will battle it out on the ground at EU LCS Regional Final for the last spot. We’re opening the door for more teams and more world-class talent from around the globe - all hungry for the chance to lift the Summoner's Cup. We'll be updating LoLesports.com in the next few weeks with more news, dates and ticket information as well as all the action leading up to regional qualifiers so stay tuned!

Will the finals and semifinals be in October as well? Need to book hotel and flights. Are there exact dates? I really need to start planning right now

Sounds like they're doing a FIFA world cup group stage, very fitting!

I suggested a 16 team group stage with 3 teams from each region (KR NA China EU SEA) plus the defending world champions, but this format allows for the wildcards to surprise us all. Looking forward to it!

Will only the grand finals be played in the stadium? After attending last year's Grand Final I realized that it would've been awesome to see a third place match earlier in the day. That might have had to do with the SKT T1 stomp though. Either way it's absolutely amazing how far esports, especially for League of Legends, has come. Amazing stuff. Keep it up!

Well we all know that only 1 country potentially can have 4 teams go to Worlds. By flouting the rules and putting an entire foreign team in NA, China could very well send 4 teams. Meanwhile it limits it's own domestic league to only 2 foreigners per team (and really there may only be 2 in the entire league, both from Korea). So congrats to China for finding a way to cheat the system...and hearty boos and jeers to Riot for allowing it.

Oceania may be a part of Worlds this year? SWEET.

Pretty much disgusted with Riot.

**What did they 'advertise' in Nov '13?? **

Saying that it will be held in Korea...

Now all of a sudden, it will be held in different stages & different countries??

(Which i think is not a bad idea - just that all of the info should have been told in the beginning)

2 points that i hope wont be too much of a factor

  1. teams having to travel...

  2. In future, Riot announced that LOL WC will be held in different countries... yeah right... I really hope this is true... Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me

Many fans from Korea are upset about this announcement... In S3 worlds, they had 41 games over 2 weeks for group stage and 22 games over tournament stage. This season there are even more teams in group stage so its obvious that they will have more games in SEA than South Korea. Plus, now many teams have to get their trips scheduled not only to Korea but to SEA as well. This is no longer S4 Worlds in Korea anymore....
