Facts

Manu “Shizoli” Bansal participated on the roster of a Ranked 5s ladder team that qualified for the Spring Challenger Series Qualifiers. During the rigorous vetting process that all players seeking to participate in the Challenger Series go through, it came to light that Bansal has been demonstrating excessively toxic in-game behavior. This behavior included, but was not limited to, in-game harassment, verbal abuse, and continual use of racial slurs. Over the lifetime of his account, 65% of the reports his account received were for Verbal Abuse, Negative Attitude, and Offensive Language. He has been consistently receiving chat restrictions since March with no indication of reform.

Relevant Rules:

Section 9.2.7 of the official Challenger Series ruleset states:

“If CS or Riot determines that a Team or Team Member has violated the Summoner’s Code, the LoL Terms of Service, or other rules of LoL, CS officials may assign penalties at their sole discretion.”

He got lucky that he was only suspended one split and perma-banned outright. Good on Riot being lenient here and giving his team time to find replacements so there won't be a repeat of what happened to NIP.

Why are "continual use of racial slurs" not perma-ban worthy?

Are ethnic minorities ok to slur continually for months in Riot's view?

I find this disheartening as someone that has to deal with such slurs it in real life let alone games companies saying its not an important enough thing to care about addressing.

They're not okay which is why he got temp banned. It's sad that you have to deal with such slurs in real life but that does not mean people need to get the maximum punishment every time they do it. This is actually good harsh punishment but actually allows him a chance to reform.

But you would think that 9 months of continual usage as they said is enough time that it means more then a temp ban. The worrying thing is that for 9 months he is not being punished and then only punished with a temp ban. It sends an apathetic message and and even darker message to those that this kind of harassment is directed to. gl hf out.

Maybe this is the first time he is being punished and we'll see less use of racial slurs in the future. People need a chance to change. Should he have known better? Absolutely. But everything all at once won't work to solve problems. It is also important to work with people where they are, instead of just lashing back at them when they are offensive. He is a person who needs to be educated, not a problem that needs to be dealt with. It pains me that you do deal with slurs in your everyday life.

not at all... any ban for him in competetive play is completely ludicrous, being that, if i had an employee working for me, that is racist at home, its not my business unless he comes to work and does the same thing... so this is complete garbage, riot thinks it owns everything, and can do what they want. treat whoever they want like shit, and make them do whatever they want cause their the big bad bully on the playground, and now their rich, so screw us all, their in charge. dont speak out of turn, or we ban you for anything but failure to communicate, and assisting enemy team, oh yeah no1 gets banned for intentionally feeding either. but yeah, look at the new rules riot made, and its hard proof they want to dominate every slave... i mean **customer they have. including the teams making them more money.

Because punishing someone to get even isn't constructive. This sends the message it's not ok and allows the chance to reform. He is more likely to learn the error of his ways if he's forced to master his bad behavior in an environment where he has incentive to do so.

Bear in mind that these types of suspensions are reviewed at the end of their term and if the person hasn't shown improvement, they'll be restricted again. The suspension is really just the 'minimum term' of the punishment, not the potential length of it.

They're just giving him a split to reform, if he doesn't, we'll hear that his suspension has been extended. If he does, we'll hear the opposite.

But being suspended from competitive play is a far harsher punishment than having his personal account closed... since the latter is 'just a video game account', while the former is potentially the death of a long time dream that he's been working towards. If ANYTHING is going to get him to reform, it'll be that... so it makes sense to give him that chance.

TLDR: I think this punishment is fair; this is about changing the whole community not just one toxic player. You need a chance for reform and not just permabans to do that.

How can you think they are saying it's "okay" and "not addressing" when they just ended his shot at going pro this spring. It is addressed right here in this announcement (basically a public shaming). This a pretty major thing to take away what these players strive for and I'm happy they did so. I would have also been okay with a perma ban here but I don't think that's the answer to every abusive player. This highlights their push for reform across the playerbase. This is the first time he's received anything more than a chat restriction, hopefully he becomes civil now. If not they will not be lenient next time or then I will agree with you.

Allthough i am an EUW player myself i gotta say you're wrong, such a wildcardteam ensured Cloud9's advance at worlds by defeating Alliance. If they hadn't it would have come to a tiebreaker where honestly everything could have happened. Therefore why not watch some OCS once in a while maybe they'll discover some new monstertalent there. On a sidenote: You can watch almost every game u want on yt with english commentary or at least subs so whats the rage about.

Your argument is a one time luck win. The wildcard did what is hoped it will do, have one or two lucky wins that have massive impact on other things and create hype story lines. For that to work the wildcard needs to play hype/good teams, no one gives cares to watch two wildcard teams play one another you are fighting to be the best worst of the worst. Also no one is going to watch OCS and say shit that guy is a god, better bring him over. Why? Because they are the worst, so someone that is a god there will probably end up about average in higher levels of play. I am noting say that we just shouldn't stream these games, but we should not ignore a much stronger regions games because its "fair" or something. I want to watch LPL to see how all these new koreans are effecting the league, to see how all these teams I have known for years are reacting to new changes in the game, and there is finally a quality english stream for it? People want to watch what is a top two region with teams and players we know, not watch a region that is one of the worst with a bunch of people we don't know and have no reason to learn about.
