So just what exactly has been going on in this hotly contested region? Let’s dive in and see just what’s been happening!

In-State Showdown

Last week’s broadcasted match featured two Texas powerhouses: The University of Texas and Texas A&M. These two universities have a rivalry spanning more than 100 years and both teams were at the top of the southern standings. The boiling school rivalry and a thin margin for error made this an extremely hard-fought match.

The games were closely contested, but Texas A&M consistently found ways to dispatch the strategies of UT, leading to a clean 2-0 victory. The win keeps Texas A&M at the top of the South Conference, where they boast a conference-high 12 points through the first five weeks of play. When asked about what he was looking forward to, Texas A&M’s mid laner Reid “Epicshots” Towart responded, “I want to prove we can do even better than last year by making it to the finals.”

A Tight Race

The top four in each of the conferences advance to playoffs. While Texas A&M is still the heavy favorite to walk out of the South as the conference’s top seed, Georgia Tech sits tied with A&M atop the conference with 12 points. Both teams will go into next week looking to clinch better playoff berths if they can secure 2-0 victories over their opponents.

Right below them is the University of Texas with 9 points, while Florida State and Vanderbilt are tied for 4th with 7 points. With time to make moves, it’s still possible for teams to step up and secure themselves a spot in the playoffs. The final two weeks of conference play will be high stakes with a shot at playoffs within reach for almost every team in the South Conference.

Nobody is relenting coming down the final stretch and the players are fighting to get their teams to the biggest stage in collegiate League of Legends. The South Conference continues to live up to its fiery name with matchups just as fierce as the deeply rooted rivalries -- these next two weeks will decide it all!
