Feral Junglers Flare up in LCS Playoffs

Feral Flare has revolutionized the jungle, at least as far as solo queue is concerned. But what has the impact of Feral Flare had on the competitive scene? The finals were dominated by five junglers: Elise, Kha'Zix, Xin Zhao, Nocturne, and Evelynn. How did Feral Flare play out in any of their matchups?

Feral Flare

Feral Flare allows junglers to farm and scale into the late game. Of course, the downside is that it incentivizes junglers to focus on their own game and not impact lanes. This can be devastating for a team if the opposing jungler chooses to focus on lane pressure, or their laners are simply stronger. While many thought Meteos would transition immediately to this style, given his farm heavy season, he doesn't “really like feral flare as an item because it only rewards a hyper passive play style”, something he doesn't believe “to be very effective in the current metagame”. However, he does think that “Feral Flare is strong on champions that auto attack a lot and can clear the jungle quickly, such as Nocturne, Master Yi, and Xin Zhao”.

Feral Flare Junglers

Nocturne, the Eternal Nightmare Nocturne was definitely the strongest of the Feral Flare junglers. He was about even vs Elise, and he performed quite well vs other junglers, including Kha'Zix and his fellow Feral Flare jungler, Xin Zhao. He showed off his significantly higher farming speed, turning that farm into a Blade of the Ruined King, making him very strong in the mid game as a ganker combined with his long ranged ultimate. However, as he got tankier towards the late game, that ultimate allowed him to dive onto back lines in late game, serving as a hugely disruptive force. The combination of fast farming, strong ganks, and late-game scaling allowed him to easily beat Kha'Zix and Xin Zhao, but did not fare particularly well vs the early game potential of Elise, combined with the strong CC she brings late game. Xin Zhao, the Seneschal of Demacia Xin Zhao was extremely hyped in solo queue, but failed to perform well in the LCS playoffs. His extremely low clear speed meant that his Feral Flare took longer to complete, and became less impressive. As such, he was completely shut down by Elise, who could snowball games well before he could make an impact. He was also beaten by Nocturne, in part due to less reliable dive-power forcing him to build tankier earlier. He performed decently well vs Kha'Zix, largely because he could duel him early on, thanks to his strong damage and spammable single-target CC.

Spirit Stone Junglers

Elise, the Spider Queen Elise was definitely the most dominant jungler in the playoffs, going 14-6. She did especially well vs the Feral Flare junglers, with a combined 9-3 record vs Xin Zhao and Nocturne. The early pressure she was able to exert on lanes compared to either of them allowed her to snowball lanes, while her late game strength has not been heavily impacted by her nerfs (on Elise mains). Meteos and Jankos both had much different builds than most Elise players, prioritizing CDR with items like Locket of the Iron Solari, Frozen Heart, and Ionian Boots of Lucidity, and went a combined 10-0. The rest of Elise junglers went more standard pen builds, and only managed a 4-6 record. Evelynn, the Widowmaker Evelynn was one of the worst-performing junglers of the playoffs. She did well vs Kha'Zix, but suffered vs every other jungler. Overall, she only had one game against Feral Flare (Xin Zhao), and she lost that game. Kha'Zix, the Voidreaver Kha'Zix was the only jungler to have a winning matchup vs Elise. However, he did not perform particularly well against the Feral Flare junglers, going 3-4 overall. He actually continued to out-scale Nocturne, serving as a combination assassin/tank, but Xin Zhao was able to fight him 1v1 early on and shut down his early game strength.

Feral Flare vs Spirit Stone

Albeit we have a small sample size, overall, Feral Flare itself was not very strong. Xin Zhao was extremely weak in almost every matchup due to his inability to farm it quickly enough. He happened to be good against Kha'Zix, due to his strength in 1v1s and 2v2s against him, but lost almost every other matchup. On Nocturne, Feral Flare was good, but not particularly dominant, with a 5-4 record against Spirit Stone junglers (his remaining two wins came against Xin Zhao). To me, Feral Flare is extremely powerful, I wouldn't call it OP but I think it does need some balancing. I also think Yi needs a nurf because he is OP as crap with this item, compared to every other jungler, hence his 85% ban rate across all ranked queues... which is insane.

I think the fact that certain Feral Flare junglers (Udyr in particular) can SOLO baron before 25mins if they're built properly & have a Flare with some amount of stacks on it is specifically what makes it "too" powerful. I've done it on Udyr using different skill orders, as well as different items, and generally speaking, if you're able to get at least 15 stacks on your Flare after getting it before 25mins, and you have an attack speed item, an armor item (completed), and some form of magic resist (negatron or a Spectre's Cowl), you can solo baron spamming back & forth between Turtle & damage abilities, and take almost no damage while doing so... When higher level teams figure this out, it will be extremely ridiculous, I think, and thereby result in Flare being nurfed, but I doubt that'll happen anytime soon.

I do have to question why Riot has yet to nurf Yi when he has been at that extremely high ban rate since Feral Flare's release. Of course, I say that, and look at how long they took to actually "fix" Kassadin with how "broken" he was by ranked queue standards (his extremely high ban rate is what I mean).

". . . He [Meteos] does think that 'Feral Flare is strong on champions that auto attack a lot and can clear the jungle quickly. . . '" Feral Flare is extremely potent on the champion Udyr. I don't understand why LCS players don't use him more. I build Feral Flare>Sunfire Cape>Trinity Force>BotRK, and own solo cue.

I would be interesting to look at this comparison with a large sample size. We could include challenger teams. But it really is too soon to draw real conclusions on the flare expectantly with the 4.6 patch.

TLDR Not going through with the FF nerfs on PBE? Seeing as you have pointed out it has clear weaknesses.

I don't know why don't they pick Shyvana in jungle, u can reach 30 1st stacks at 14 min with a good farming, you are one of the best 1v1 junglers in early, you can counter jungle, good counter ganks, just can't really gank well if the laner isn't over extanded, but she still very strong and deal so much in late with only Botrk + Feral flare + tanky items. I also think Yasuo is really good, ofc it's really hard for him to gank, but with the Feral Flare well stack he deal sooo much damage in late, against the good team and with the good team he is so strong. But yes against a team with hard cc and without bumps in his one he is useless.

Feral Flare

Attack Speed lowered to 25% from 35%
Attack damage lowered to 10 from 15
Unique Passive - Maim now reads "Maim: Basic attacks deal (25 + Feral stacks) bonus magic damage (300% against minions and monsters) and heal 10 Health on hit. Kills, assists and large monster kills grant a Feral stack." from "Maim: Basic attacks deal 100 bonus magic damage (33% against champions) and heal 10 Health on hit. This damage and heal increases with kills, assists and large monster kills."

[Note: Tl;dr = Seems Feral Flare's heal no longer scales up with stacks and the initial damage after transformation is lower but scales up the same. ]

RIP FERAL FLARE
