Worlds Format Ideas
Explanation
Let me preface by saying, I have been a fan of League of Legends as an esport since 2013, and I want to see it grow and succeed. Notably this year, there were many underlying issues with the group draw. I believe that the top eight teams should always make it out of their group. There should never be a disappointing quarter-final (notably Splyce versus SKT T1) because there is a bottom eight team that makes it out of their respective group. My World's format creates a four pool system instead of the current three. Each group will contain one team from every pool. The pools are entirely based on regional placement from the last World Championship. This is because different regions have different respective strengths. For example, Korea's third seed got out of groups in first place while North America's first seed did not make it out of groups at all. Pool one consists of the Semi-finalists from last worlds. Pool two consists of the teams that lost in the quarter finals. Pool three consists of the teams that placed third in their group. Pool four consists of the teams that placed fourth in their group. Pool four would also play in the Play-ins with there being a pool 5 and 6 for the emerging regions with the same premise. As this Worlds is not yet completed, I will use 2018 World's placement to create four pools for the 2019 Worlds. For example, Pool one this Worlds would be Fun Plus Phoenix, G2, Fnatic, and Team Liquid. Pool two would be SK Telecom T1, Griffin, Royal Never Give Up, and Invictus Gaming. Pool three would be Cloud 9, Clutch Gaming, Splyce, and J Team. Pool four would be GAM Esports, ahq e-Sports Club, Hong Kong Attitude, and Damwon. Pool four would also be the teams playing in the Play-Ins. Admittedly, the pools may have some teams lower than their projected power ranking; however, the strength of this format is creating groups with four teams of varying strengths. Using this format, there is very little chance for a team whose projected power ranking is below top eight to get out of groups aside from upsets. I believe it also places a higher emphasis on how well teams perform at Worlds. The last benefit is allowing the emerging regions a higher chance in getting into the main tournament. Please feel free to do some test group draws and see how they turn out. I would love to see other ideas and maybe some modifications to mine, such as a loser's bracket starting at quarter-finals. Once again, I am just a massive League of Legends Esports fan that wants to see the most exciting and fair tournament possible.
