Can ROX take down SKT in the Semifinals?

Riot··3 votes·19,982 views

If a tiger kills its prey with a quick snap to the neck, then the ROX Tigers almost lived up to their namesake here in their Quarterfinal against Edward Gaming.

They certainly showed those qualities in the first two games of the series -- though a valiant fightback from EDG kept the killing blow at bay for as long as they possibly could.

Coming into Worlds 2016, both the ROX Tigers and Edward Gaming were considered to be in the top three teams in the tournament. Though the roads they walked to the Quarterfinals were littered with similar messy mistakes. Both lost to wildcard teams -- but it was EDG who fell deeper into that ditch, losing a tiebreaker with H2K to become Group C’s No. 2 seed, setting up this series in the first place.

The biggest question mark coming into this Quarterfinal hung over the top lane and the departure of Mouse due to a family emergency. While Mouse had his questionable games in the Group Stages, he was also pivotal in some of EDG’s wins -- particularly when he was on playmaking tanks like Poppy. Thankfully, this was Mouse’s rookie split as top laner for EDG. He has plenty of time to recover, grow, and hopefully we will see him on the Worlds stage again.

To replace Mouse, EDG turned to their former top laner Koro1, who hadn’t played a game in the entire Summer Split. He was going to have to go toe-to-toe against Smeb, the man we considered to be the best top laner -- and overall player -- in the world right now. He thinks about the title a bit differently, though.

"I think I haven’t yet shown the performance level of the strongest player in League of Legends," he says. "I actually pondered about the title a lot. I felt like I was under a lot of pressure because of the title. But trying to perform like the strongest player in League of Legends doesn’t actually help the team."

"So, if my team is the strongest, and I’m an excellent player in it, then I could be the best player in League of Legends -- so that’s where I’m headed," Smeb continues. "I’m trying to make the team the best first."

Smeb gave Koro1 a baptism of fire in Game 1. With the help of Peanut, he feasted in the top lane, taking the first top turret in 11 minutes and ballooning his CS lead. From there he was able to give everyone watching a masterclass on Jayce top, showing why he can be so strong in the current meta -- rotating all over the map and taking even more turrets with ease.

Much like last year at Worlds 2015, ROX were starting to show the kind of form that they lacked in the Group Stages. Their claws were out, fangs bared, ready to rip the EDG to shreds. They escaped team fights on slivers of health time and time again, demonstrating why they are one of the best engage/disengage teams in the world.

[[{"fid":"23497","view_mode":"centered","fields":{"format":"centered","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":"","field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":""},"tagName":"IMG","src":"http%3A//admin.prod.lolesports.com/s3/files/styles/centered/public/worlds_qf_10152016_mw_mrv_7931.jpg%3Fitok%3DV2XUdQQT","type":"media","attributes":{"class":"media-element file-centered","height":"661","width":"992"}}]]

Smeb completely shifted gears in Game 2, opting into a Maokai vs. Kennen matchup. To go from a Jayce to Maokai is a tough swing, your entire mindset and playstyle has to flip as you’re now there to enable your teammates to carry instead of carrying yourself. But what’s most impressive about his performance here was how he managed to get ahead in CS, something which a Maokai just shouldn’t be able to do in this matchup.

"Maokai wasn’t actually a pick that we prepared," Smeb admits. "But [EDG’s] lineup had a lot of champions who were powerless against Maokai." Powerless indeed. Smeb wasn’t the only dominant Tiger here though. ROX managed to close the game out in just 26 minutes -- one of the fastest of the tournament.

People were getting ready for an early night, but EDG had other plans. With their backs against the wall they came out swinging. For the third time of the night a team blind picked Ryze, was counterpicked by Aurelion Sol, and ended up losing the game. This time the shoe was on the other foot and EDG showed that they weren’t dead yet. Though ultimately, it would not be enough to salvage their Worlds hopes.

With their Game 4 victory, the ROX Tigers put on one of their cleanest performances yet. Everything from their engages, rotations, to Peanut going 11-0-5 in his first professional Olaf game was on point. If SK Telecom T1 is the best reactive team here at Worlds, then ROX are surely the best proactive team.

These teams will now face off in the Semifinals, a rematch of last year’s Final. It will be like watching an unstoppable force vs. an immovable object.

"Our mindset facing SKT is definitely different from last year," says Smeb. "The evaluations of SKT last year was that they were enormously strong and would probably win Worlds without a single loss. The evaluation about ROX was we were comparatively a lot weaker than SKT and that actually affected our mindset. We built SKT up in our heads into a monster."

Going into their Semifinals rematch against the reigning World Champions, Smeb and ROX's aren't going to let their fears get the best of them. "This year we know they are strong, but this year we are the monster.”

One thing that may help the ROX Tigers in the upcoming battle is...you! "You know how players always go for the three syllable cheer? Like T-S-M and S-K-T?" says Smeb. "I know that shouting out R-O-X is kinda weird, but I would really like it to happen just once.”

You can cheer for ROX when they face off against their rival SK Telecom T1 in the Worlds Semifinals on Friday, October 21.

It's nice to see LCK fall season playoffs in United States

Too bad KT couldn't make it to the playoffs

And it's nice to see all the bad NA and EU teams get what they deserved (and H2k will get it Saturday)

Great on ROX for winning today. Too bad they're going up against their own personal kyrptonite next.

About time we see REAL League of Legends had to wait about 2 weeks watching NA get destroyed over and over so it's nice to see 2 good teams instead a good team vs NA.

It's okay he's a C9 fan he doesn't understand, poor guy.

III BAKURYU III 3 votes

Understandable being they were the only NA team to make it out of groups while the other two teams either came in with so much hype and failed and a team that can't seem to beat an IWC team to save their life for the past 2 years.

Reaxetion1 votes

Don't let the fools like him dictate your view of C9 fans. I don't like being associated with that, and I am a die hard C9 fan.

Yxgl222HaX2 votes

i agree. Let the simple minded bandwagonieers rewatch the same endings over and over. After h2ks games are over thats it for me. Why even bother watching the others because its just the same thing as the last 3 years over and over. Rinse and repeat

Reaxetion2 votes

It is still exciting watching the top caliber teams duke it out. This ROX vs SKT match is going to be intense! I an stoked for the finals too. I am a die hard C9 fan, and always root for all NA teams at worlds, but even with all this disappointment, I still get excited over the tournament. Sure the Chiefs haven't made it to the Superbowl in my lifetime, but I still always watch the Superbowl. Even when its the Seaskwaks vs Pats. You just gotta watch the top tier teams.

Yxgl222HaX1 votes

would you still watch it if it was the pats vs seahawks every single time? year after year the same thing? lcs has been going for what 6 years? and out of that skt is a likely finalist for the 3rd time and even if they dont make it at least 1 kr team will. So lets say 50% of league finals so far are KR. if 50% of superbowls where pats vs seahawks that would be 25 years (i think theres 50 superbowls so far idk i dont really follow football) of the same match up, over and over. Would you really still watch the same final over and over? Because thats basically what it is, at this point i just hope we dont have MORE skt skins because 15 skins of the same team seems kinda drab.

Reaxetion1 votes

You are arguing that Korea is all the same. But its not, there are different teams with different unique personalities, play styles, and preferences. If every year it was Patriots, Dolfins, or Jets vs Seahawks, Cardinals, or 49rs, then yes I would still watch. Each of those set of 3 teams are in the same Division - much like Korean teams are all in the same region. Sure SKT is making another run at the championship, but thats how Football seems to go as well - teams have multiple dominate seasons. League is a new emerging professional scene. for one team to make a good run 3 out of 4 years is not out of the ordinary in many sports, why is it so different here? Before SKT won, SSG did. Then it was SKT again, and before that TPA won. FNT technically won too, but I won't count them since Koreans didn't play that year. 3 different winners in 4 years is definitely exciting to me.

The gap isn't closed, but its only a matter of time before the other regions step up, or before the price of players gets to a point that teams can only afford so much talent. (I am not an advocate of team salary caps, but they naturally develop on their own when left in an environment like this.)

EU went 0-4 against NA and bjergsen was sick and we wanted immortals over CLG the only EU team that made it was just lucky to have no Korean or NA teams in their group

III BAKURYU III 1 votes

" Eu went 0-4 against NA " EU and the other regions got boo'd 24/7 while each NA team got cheered non-stop. It tilted EU and honestly I think EU found out that it doesn't matter how far EU or NA makes it they won't ever win a championship and.... Oh EU actually WON a World Championship and last year made it further than NA 3-4th places each to represent their homecrowd. NA got to .... QT Finals only to get shrekt 0-3. #Represent NA Represent. I mean when you haven't won a World Championship yet and people see the " EU VS NA" memes it's just foolish.

" Bjergsen was sick " Gotta eat, and gotta go outside at least once in awhile.

"We wanted Immortals over CLG " Immortals couldn't make it out of NA how the F would they fair against international teams? Spring and Summer split Immortals were locked in the second round and they still couldn't make it to the NA finals in either splits.

twodown1togo2 votes

the EU win doesn't really matter it was awhile ago with no meaning to their strength or weakness now when the game was new and no one even knew what types of champs go bot and s4 we won a game against both of the best Korean teams season 5 EU number 1 undefeated team lost a game to the 7th place NA and NA was weak at worlds last year because we had afew bad roster swaps like yellowstar who ran back to EU after one split and the EU vs NA changes every year saying EU or NA better for something that happened anywhere 2+ years is worthless EU doesn't have much of an argument this year going 0 4 against NA and h2k was great luck getting no NA or Korean teams and then a wildcard team in quarters although I will admit that the 0 10 of the week last year for NA is cringy and to be honest I think with how bad meteos was on lee c9 probably would've been better off with hai jungle and maybe EU and NA should stop fighting each other when the Koreans just laugh at both of us with their Korean vs Korean final 2 years in a row its like playing risk with both of the weaker players fighting each other while the better player just watches and laughs because their fight doesn't do anything to change the outcome and in the playoffs immortals beat CLG

Edgar Allan Pwn2 votes

sentences have punctuation. that was unreadable; it reminded me of going to an auction house.

Exossen2 votes

Agreed, i don't think immortals can compete outside NA. They are easily checked and are very stubborn in adjusting in patches. Their support doesn't affect the game much, he's just being reactive to what happens and shields and protect his adc. He only plays ranged control supports but can't use bard to its potential and limits himself to soraka, janna and karma which affects the whole team. Also Huni and Reign has so much weight on their shoulders when their jung is checked and they can't make plays. If Huni can't solo his lane match up Immortals is done.

NA absolutely wiped the flood with EU's number 1 seed AGAIN! CLG 2-0'd G2-8 at MSI and now NA 4-0's eu again. NA > EU obviously

H2k what? H2CYA!

III BAKURYU III 1 votes

CLG did beat G2 4-0 in the past months. I give you that.

" NA > EU" for only this year right ? Cause EU can at least get past the QT Finals at Worlds also has also WON a WORLD Championship( BUT THERE WAS NO KOREAN TEAMS ONLY NA VS EU...... YEP EU REKT NA IN SEASON 1 WITH NO EXCUSES)

SEASON ONE NA-EU 2-2 Finals and the Grand Finals was EU VS EU ( NO NA teams)

SEASON TWO CLG EU got passed the QT Finals; TSM didn't

SEASON THREE NA 2-4 EU 4-2 In the Group stage; 2 EU teams made it to the QT Finals, TSM and VULCAN didn't. FNATIC faced C9 who was given a free bye for some reason most likely because Riot even knew that NA would just suck in Groups and FNATIC still beat C9 2-1. Another EU in the Semi-Finals.

SEASON FOUR NA-EU 3-3 2 NA teams FINALLY got to QT Finals without a Free- Bye PRAISE THE LORD Hallelujah... HALLELUJAH... HALLELUJAH!

SEASON FIVE EU 3-1 NA FNATIC and ORIGEN both eliminated C9 and TSM to not only get to QT Finals but actually "WIN" their QT Finals to play in the Semi-Finals. To Represent EU and to their Europe crowd # REPRESENT.

SEASON SIX NA 4-0 EU Each and every NA team was up 1 or 2 games ahead of their opponents all each sitting at 2-1..... all ending at 3-3. # REPRESENT NA at least put up a fight on your home turf instead just getting destroyed in front of all these good people.
Cloud 9 advanced to QT Finals and lost; H2K faced a team that CLG couldn't beat ONCE and swept them, but they too lost to SSG.

NA 12 Wins over EU EU 12 Wins over NA

NA made it to the Semi-Finals TWICE; while EU made it to the Semi-Finals SIX times. NA is constantly up in their groups to only get destroyed in the later parts of Groups.

LMQ up 2-0............ 2-4 TSM up 4-1..............4-2 C9 up 2-0................4-3 CLG up 2-0...............2-4 TSM at 1-1.................1-5 C9 up 3-0...................3-4 TSM up 2-1.................3-3 CLG up 2-1...................3-3 C9 up 2-1......................3-3 NA 20-5 before the reality hits........... 5-26 REALITY Kicks back in!

Wow, you really need to get a life... You spent waaaay too much time on this. Good thing NA always > EU

III BAKURYU III 1 votes

So I can't have a life and on my free time know about something that I watch ? Similar to NBA,Walking Dead, NFL,NHL?? Can't get home and know what you watch? I didn't spend much time on it; it was easy finding out Eu has always out performed NA.

ahsaya1 votes

You were soo confident in h2k. And what happened? H2Korean teams in the finals. NA has always beaten EU. I guess you just don't want to remember dlift getting a penta on eu in all stars? or perhaps eu losing bota? yeah NA has always rekt 3rd world eu

III BAKURYU III 1 votes

"H2Korean teams in the Finals" Nice!

"NA has always beaten EU" It's actually the opposite and while NA and EU are on equal footing against each other at Worlds, Eu has actually out performed NA on multiple occasions like actually Winning a Worlds... yes yes it was just really NA vs EU but isn't that NA vs EU? Eu rarely import players but when they do they actually get further in tournaments not like NA where all NA does is import players with $ and false imagination about Winning but not get the job done.

  • On a side note; I'm not trying to talk trash or be rude and if I am I'm sorry!! I really am! If I upset you with my comments or posts I will end it here.( I'm not trying to get the last word as that's really rude but I won't say anything else if I have offended you in any way).
I'm not being sarcastic or "trolling" you. Sorry again and Happy Holidays; have a good one!
ahsaya1 votes

I wouldn't play online games or post online if I got offended that easily. I'm just trying to correct you because NA has always wiped the floor with 3rd world EU.

III BAKURYU III 1 votes

NA is better than EU 1 year and in the next EU is better than NA; 2015 you could say EU was the better region and 2016 you could argue NA was actually better.
Overall at the end of the day it doesn't matter as neither can do much against LCK or LPL.
I would say once EU and NA can stop arguing and actually work together and really scrim each other etc the Western Region would be stronger than Korea but the NA-EU Rivalry 2 Strong!

I'm glad I didn't upset u as it wasn't my intention, it's great to have a conversation with an opposite side to arguments without it getting too heated so that's cool!

  • Whats your thoughts on TSM/Wildturtle again? Better or worse?
  • Phoenix 1 with some big moves such as Adrian-Ryu and Arrow are they going to be a team to beat or just a bluff?

I would like to talk about something other than NA vs EU as it's really getting us nowhere ;]

Reaxetion1 votes

I am from NA and I wanted CLG over IMT. Wild Turtle is one of my favorite pro players and I still wanted CLG more. The fact of the matter is that IMT choke, HARD. CLG got 2nd at MSI. CLG at least sometimes rises to the challenge. I love watching IMT vs NA - those are great games. But when push comes to shove, they crumble under pressure when they need to win the most. Maybe next year they can get those nerves ironed out and they will be a good contender for worlds.

The Same Eu that eliminated SK Telecom T1 and dunked Team Liquid at MSI?

how about giving NA on seed Next year cause its a waste of effort in the competition itself

III BAKURYU III 3 votes

“quality over quantity”

Giving 1 team in the region that has the most talent will just lower the Championship value. It's like asking the NBA teams that finished 1-3 in the standings to not be apart of the Playoffs because the 4-8 teams suck compared to them and they want to win. Maybe if these other regions actually get good for once instead just taking "vacations or memes " all the time they can win.
Look at Jensen he meme Faker and the only reason C9 got out of Groups was because of Faker.

Emlnence1 votes

so true lol Faker was like "I saw what you wrote on twitter so I clapped you, but since I like you I decided to get you out of groups this year."

GumaSushi2 votes

um.... Duke, Bang, Wolf, Blank were not considered as most talent players in season 3,4? Smeb was considered as worst top laner in LCK before he joined ROX?? Their effort of practice made them top class. People didn't expected SKT to win in 2015, since bang wolf, marin were from SKT S who performed really bad past years. They didn't make team with best players, they became best players. Jelly?

III BAKURYU III 1 votes

um... ok. How did this conversation get started again?

Every top laner in LCK on bad teams is considered worst top, look at Duke he lost like every game with his old team and STILL WON A MVP for being on that team.

Smeb was on a pure garbage team and 3-4 season had to compete with SSW-SSB-SKT 1-SKT 2- Najin B-Najin W: so yeah who wouldn't lose against that lineup in a region.

People didn't expect SKT to win Worlds 2015! Who were the people picking to win it ? Cloud 9 ? Fnatic with barbie doll Rekkles ? ....Bangcock Titans ? EDG who always looks like complete garbage in groups only to get eliminated in the first round. (now for 3 years in a row EDG looks shaky in Group stage only to get eliminated in the first round) Anyone with a brain could tell SKT was going to win the 2015 Championship, when they entered a Group with Shaky EDG- H2huh? and Bangcock Titans.

Didn't SKT TS make it further than SKT in 2014 Playoffs. Didn't SKT TS tie SSW also in the playoffs/Group stages.

" Jelly " um... no?

GumaSushi1 votes

well yea smeb was in bad team, but he was also a bad player at that time. He is great player now but he was literally worst top laner at that moment, he even talks about that in his interview. Duke was good player, i agree. SKT S made further, but it doesn't mean they are better. If u r saying skt s was better than skt K, u are saying SSG is better than KT just because they made further. 2015, many people expected LGD or EDG to win, they were strong teams in LPL and also beat SKT in MSI. People believed SKT did good in LCK only because many good players like players from samsung went to China. SO Skt weren't expected to win the world before seeing Chinese team falling in group stage at worlds. so U R jelly :)

Not boring for me, it's exciting as fuck, I watched all of LCS and LCK this season and I can tell you LCK was MUCH more fun to watch even if it meant me staying up til 4AM. :)

III BAKURYU III 3 votes

Indeed seeing Jin Air in 45 min games was always fun to watch and to see how long they can make each game last it was like a track list. Watching Afreeca become a team that given another split or so and they could be the next World Champions for next year. CJ Entus watching Madlife 1v9 at the support role is always entertaining. SKT well their SKT ROX- KT-SSG just great teams and great games

NA it's like ok well LCK wanna be teams/players Team Liquid each split we all know where their going to end up 4th or 5th. P1-Echo Fox-NRG laughable TSM-C9-CLG-IMT are the only good NA teams and their garbage compared to the LCK teams.

Emlnence2 votes

But my point was I'd rather watch LCK over LCS, the teams are more disciplined and you can see it in their play, they don't try to do stupid 1v5 hero shit like NA does. I'm not saying LCK players are perfect but they play more level headed and sometimes it makes the games slower yes but when they fight they have a reason to do so not just because they like fighting.

III BAKURYU III 3 votes

I'm not arguing with you as I love methodical and smart paced games I don't care if a game is 0-0 50 mins in, I can care less about clown fiestas that NA seems to have with a bunch of kills and no real strategy.
That is why I like watching Jin Air mainly because for the most part their down in gold early in most games and yet they still make teams earn the win with a hard fought 42 min per game average against other LCK teams like that's an excellent job. Look at NA teams when their in a hole 15 mins in a game the game is over by the 27 min mark let alone a 50 min back and fourth game.

I'v always been a slow paced player myself I can care less if I play a hour and a half game as long as it's clean and I win, if that means playing smart and passive and wait for my opportunity for the clock to hit 45 mins for 1 clean ace to win the game so be it.

SKT vs ROX will be a great game 2 of best teams in worlds going at it, but only one will win. If I had to choose I would probably go with SKT. They're dangerous in every single phase in the game. However ROX's players are phenomenal Peanut and Smeb to be exact, but SKT have a GOD in mid and an undefeated duo at bot lane. CLose game but I'm pretty sure SKT will win this match and then win worlds.
