EDG Worlds Roster Update

Riot·10/12/2016, 7:58:55 PM·3 votes·45,363 views

It’s our sad duty to confirm that Yu-hao “Mouse” Chen will be returning to China to address the loss of a family member, as confirmed by the team and verified with documentation for League officials, and thus will be unable to participate in the remainder of the 2016 World Championship. Per Worlds rules, Edward Gaming is permitted to replace Mouse with a player from their season-ending active roster, and will have Yang “Koro1” Tong as that replacement.

Worlds rules, in section 3.2, state:

Each team is required to maintain, at all times during Worlds, five players in the starting lineup (“Starters”), and one substitute player (“Reserve”) (collectively, the “Active Roster”) as well as an official coach. The Active Roster is considered locked as of September 7th, 2016, at 11:59am PT. The Active Roster that was submitted to or known by Worlds officials on this date will be considered the eligible Active Roster for Worlds. This roster lock will not supersede regional roster locks that may have occurred prior to this date. In the absence of a regional roster lock, teams will not be able to add any new players to their roster after their last regional competition preceding Worlds.

In the case of an emergency, a team may add a substitute after this deadline, however, the substitute added must not have been on any other professional roster on September 7th and must have been eligible to be on a professional roster on September 7th. All Starters must have a written contract with the team they are playing for.

Koro1 was on EDG’s roster through the summer, and meets all eligibility requirements to play; he will be available to play starting in EDG’s Quarterfinal on Saturday, October 15th.

The family has requested privacy with which to mourn their loss. Our sincerest condolences go to Mouse and his family.

The following is a portion of a reply I made to somebody else's comment on this thread that I am reposting and adding to here because basic human decency is a rare commodity in the Riot community _world _ today and oversensitivity (real or bluffed) is also all too common:

My condolences to Mouse and his family. As easy as it is to make memes about Mouse's performance at worlds, death is something to be taken seriously in any situation and flaming someone with a recently deceased family member is at the very least in poor taste if not outright a horrible thing to do. I do also think that we can't let the circumstances of the roster change cause us to temper the discussion of what the roster change means for the tournament. That, to me, means that we can and should still evaluate Mouse's performance honestly, but we should not be douchebags about it (not that we should ever be douchey about stuff like that anyway). If you would like to talk about Mouse in a hostile manner in a private conversation with your friends, you might still be a douchebag, but you're probably not harming anyone, so go for it.

Sorry for being a moral prescriptivist in a comment thread online, but I really think this is important.

Condolences to Mouse. Hopefully everything goes as smoothly at home as it can, and he can find support among his family, friends, and fans.

Condolences to Mouse and his family, and I'm not saying this story isn't true, but allowing another player to come in is inexcusable. They chose their one sub and it's Pawn. He should have to play the lane. That's what a sub is for. Bringing in someone fresh after 2 weeks of competition isn't fair. It's as simple as that.

Yeah. From statistics, he was 10 ranks far from his team but this is their roster that they picked and we have to respect it. Now we should respect his wishes and hope his family gets through this. I am sure if you lost a family member you wouldn't want people to be btching on and off.

I'm not saying it's not true, but for all we know this could be a made-up story just because he was underperforming and they wanted to replace him with someone else.

My dad died in the middle of a match we were winning. I told everyone in game about it and we all ff'd. Everyone believed me and I got to go to the hospital asap. I would have went anyway but it was best that they all let the match end.

This is terrible. At first, I thought something happened to one of the midlanes, but I see now that something has happened to Mouse. It deeply saddens me to read this article and I hope this doesn't destroy any future Mouse has in EDG, and I hope EDG does well at worlds despite this tragic event. I am glad to see that Riot was willing to work with both Mouse and the organization for this event, and I hope EDG the best, and I hope the best for Mouse.

To be honest, mouse hasn't been playing on world championship, and koro1 is pretty good. No offense to mouse, but I think koro would roam better than mouse

Damn... Best wish to Mouse and EDG!

lonelygoat10/14/2016, 9:20:03 PM2 votes

Other than feeling sorry for Mouse. I really appreciate Koro1's decision to play in Mouse's position. Mouse is by no means of Smeb's calibre, and Koro1 is even worse. Taking the position is no different than accepting the fact that he's gonna be slaughtered in the game and become a laughstock of the world. But he's doing this for Mouse as a teammate, a friend. Much respect to him.

welp koro1 didnt do that bad in the BO5... at least not as pretty much everyone expected. EDGs only flaw is that their top laner(koro1 and mouse) arent the most constant performers. feels bad man. but i jope everything goes well for mouse and his familyitem 3070

I am not even bothered to point out why he has the right to go back to China and be with his family right now.

I am just gonna point out that Mouse is Challenger in Korea Server with 800 points which Koro1 is only Diamond 1 on Chinese server right now. Additionally, Koro1 hasn't practiced with the team for very long time. Even before the group stage when the entire team was preparing in Korea, Koro1 was traveling in the USA. I don't think it will give EDG any advantage. Most people back in China right now are actually sad that EDG probably now lost all its chance to win against ROX Tiger.

To make it simple, Mouse is underperforming but getting a Diamond player who is realistically no longer a part of the team will not be any better.

Feel bad for the dude. Was getting shit on at Worlds for his performance while, I assume, he was giving up last moments with this person to be there.
