Dream Teams Assemble: 2017 All-Star Event Update

Riot·10/3/2017, 12:55:10 PM·3 votes·91,587 views

Ever wanted to see top players from leagues around the world battle it out in the ultimate dream team tournament? This December, the All-Star Event is back - and more competitive than ever.

Mark your calendars now! The 2017 All-Star Event will be held in the NA LCS Studio in Los Angeles on December 7-10.

For this year’s clash of the titans we’re saying goodbye to the unfettered mayhem and elemental battles - instead we’ll be hosting a dream team tournament with fan-voted rosters of pros from the top eight regional leagues based on their performance at the 2017 World Championship (2017 Mid-Season Invitational and previous performance at international events will be used for tiebreakers.) That means the eight regional teams will be:

  • China (LPL)
  • Europe (EU LCS)
  • Korea (LCK)
  • LMS (LMS)
  • North America (NA LCS)
  • Southeast Asia (GPL)
  • Turkey (TCL)
  • Brazil (CBLOL)

In addition to the main event, each dream team will also send two representatives from their team into the ultimate challenge of head-to-head skill: the 1v1 tournament.

Read on to learn more about the upcoming All-Star Event this winter.

QA

Why change the format? Where are the fun modes?

In previous years, the focus of All-Star was primarily on entertainment over competition. This year, our 2017 All-Stars will be playing to win. We feel that pulling them out of their competitive mindset to play one-off, fun game modes will inherently divert their focus and take away from the competitiveness of the main event.

Why can I only vote for my region?

With the focus of the event now being on the competition of regional All-Star teams, rather than a mash-up team like Fire or Ice, we want fans in each region to be the ones to choose which players will represent them at All-Star.

Why return to NA LCS studio? Why aren’t you taking All-Star on the road?

Our goal for ASE 2017 is to provide a fun and exciting series of matchups between pros from around the world. After over a month of Worlds in China - culminating in (hopefully) an awesome Finals at the Bird’s Nest, our focus for the All-Star Event is to create a great experience for fans watching from home as well as pros attending at the end of a busy year. As seen with Rift Rivals this year, our own esports studios offer a flexible space where we can welcome a live audience and still broadcast a great international show. It’s entirely possible that we’ll take the All-Star Event on the road again in coming years - but for this year, the NA LCS studio in Los Angeles felt like the best choice for fans, pros, and our event crew as we introduce this new version of All-Star.

ok so you want to make the all star event more competitive thats cool. How about changing your mind on the BO1 format for NA so that the focus can be on our region being more competitive at international events!

casayoto10/3/2017, 1:51:12 PM110 votes

The fun modes were the whole point of All Stars for me. We watch them compete in normal games the whole year. Why would I want to watch them do it again a month after Worlds?

Suhlster Glade10/3/2017, 1:31:38 PM91 votes

We don't need another competition... We already have spring split, MSI, summer split, rift rivals, and worlds. Time to have some fun after all of that. It seems like you guys are shooting air-ball after air-ball lately. The all-star games were fun and exciting after a long year of competition. Everyone loves seeing their favorite player have a little fun in tandem mode, or a 5 blitz v 5 blitz matchup. RIP the fun parts of league.

sungravity10/3/2017, 2:13:47 PM75 votes

Wasn't the point of the all-star event to have some more laid-back fun? We already have worlds finishing in November, and now we have another tournament** right after.**

To address the "competitiveness" point: When Worlds is just 30 days before All-stars, do we really need more competitive games? All-stars always felt like a nice little break between Worlds and the beginning of the next season.

I was looking forward to this (I actually was thinking of attending), but now that it's just another bland tournament I don't think I'm anywhere near as interested.

Really hoping this decision is reconsidered. Very disappointed.

EuphoZander10/3/2017, 2:01:39 PM55 votes

I'm really disappointed in this change. I enjoyed the fun modes and laid-back, crazy atmosphere of All-Stars; it really set it apart from the other super serious tournaments.

SmashburgerBRLA10/3/2017, 2:25:03 PM48 votes

I literally re-watch the All-star games that are crazy. The assassins mode, marksman mode, one for all. It is extremely disappointing that this will only be normal league. I hope you change your mind Riot.

Infernape10/3/2017, 2:05:19 PM35 votes

Wasn't the whole point of the event to have fun? There's not much point in making the entire season competitive, when you already have two regional splits, MSI, Rift Rivals and Worlds.

Wexlr10/3/2017, 3:23:15 PM31 votes

i thought all-star was all about the fun modes. it was nice to have a break from all the competitiveness and watch everybody have some fun with mirror matchups and 1v1's. i think its taking away the purpose of all-star

C9 Squeeky 10/3/2017, 3:59:24 PM25 votes

I may not be a pro & cannot speak for them but I disagree. I think pros would want to have a "fun" tournament. They need a break from all the competitiveness, that's what Worlds is for. All-Stars should be about fun/entertainment. This is essentially a bigger international Rift Rival in disguise. Region vs Region FFA.

Fidds10/3/2017, 6:18:22 PM23 votes

Riot, what in the world are you thinking. NOBODY cared about the competitive region games in the past all stars. Everyone came to watch Bjerg + Faker control one champion, or everyone playing the same champion in one for all. This is a huge mistake and I guarantee you will see a HUGE decline in viewship. Also what is the incentive for pros to take this seriously? There is no prize!

Camba4ever10/3/2017, 4:43:40 PM19 votes

Is this a joke? October fools? That will never catch on... But seriously this is terrible... "we’re saying goodbye to the the unfettered mayhem..." aka we're saying goodbye to, fun!? Who the hell cares about a more competitive All-star event. That is not the point of it at all. The pros need a break from the competitiveness of the rest of the year, not another Rift Rivals 2.0

"Our goal for ASE 2017 is to provide a _**fun **_and exciting series of matchups between pros from around the world." Well you have failed in this goal already Riot, failed... Bring back the game modes!

iArkLyte10/3/2017, 10:53:34 PM16 votes

I guess I won't be watching All Star this year... I want to watch Pro Players beat each other with their absurd skills on things they wouldn't play in a normal Pro game. Not watch BabyWorlds. This is a stupid change.

Camping M1d10/3/2017, 3:26:04 PM14 votes

I will not be watching this year now. No one gives a shit about the competitiveness of the All star games. No other sport does either. I come to watch two people play one champion and play all for one. Your esports team is fucking killing pro league of legends for me.

Aerostaticus10/3/2017, 4:52:21 PM14 votes

introduced Rift Rivals which was completely unnecessary. Have you lost your shit Riot ? Wasnt all star supposed to be a fun event where you could troll and just let the players and the viewers have fun ? I wont even watch all stars if its just another stale competitive event

Brayson10/3/2017, 5:04:59 PM14 votes

I do not like this proposed format, and would much rather see more rotating game modes played by professionals. I'd honestly prefer to keep the old 1v1 tournament style bracket that included everyone participating; however, I realize that something has to give in this situation. I'd suppose the later to be something that I'm more comfortable parting with.

FakerBoostedMe10/3/2017, 7:12:40 PM13 votes

So, they wanna kill all the fun modes and the fun in general (unusual/ "off-meta" picks) and make the pros just go full tryhard mode all season long, killing the fun for both them and the viewers. Seems legit. #RitoGame(s)

Mardha10/3/2017, 7:17:59 PM11 votes

Haha Are u kidding? First of all u take away other regions, wich i think cut off some fun and let a lot of fans disappointed! I mean, i follow all regions, i want to vote for so many of them! And the mainly thing that gets me mad... u freaking make another event after worlds!? I was soooo looking forward to see my favorite players have fun, not to be competitive...of course i want them to win but c’mon, see them with 10 blitz was so cool! I hope you change your mind Riot smh

MangoBoy3310/4/2017, 12:23:18 AM10 votes

I won't be tuning in if that is the case. Loved it for the fun aspect of the tournament.

Overwerk10/4/2017, 5:32:08 AM10 votes

Watched it for the fun modes. Won't watch it this year

SciFi Scrivener10/3/2017, 1:38:52 PM8 votes

Looking forward to the NA reps: Top - C9 Impact Jungle - C9 Contracz Mid - TSM Bjergsen ADC - TSM Doublelift Supp - IMT Olleh

Caluak10/4/2017, 4:15:34 AM7 votes

I only watch all-stars for the fun game modes. If I wanted to watch teams try as hard as they can internationally I'd watch worlds and Rift Rivals. Leave all-stars the way it is for the fans

rtbf4467756310/3/2017, 8:15:55 PM7 votes

This change sucks

Womp12310/4/2017, 9:54:29 PM6 votes

Rito....WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU GUYS DOING?!?!?!?!?! First, you say "oh Bo3s aren't giving proper competition, so we will go to Bo1s (mainly for more viewership and $)." Now, you are saying "oh the whole fun part of All-Stars isn't healthy for the competitiveness of the players." Whoever is making these recent decisions needs to be FIRED tenfold...these decisions are some of the most idiotic ones I've seen Riot make in my 3 1/2 years of playing League....HOLY CRAP

TSM Hackerslayer10/4/2017, 1:45:30 AM6 votes

All Star is supposed to be fun and relax not competitive im disappointed they changed the format and removed the fun game modes. I wish they kept the Fire and Ice teams and just add a wildcard team to each team

JLbroYUAN10/4/2017, 5:41:55 AM5 votes

Riot said: We don't have enough seats in NA LCS Studio, so we will take away all the fun modes this ASE. item 3070 item 3070

BDC munkey10/7/2017, 1:30:44 PM5 votes

Riot please don't make this tournament a competitive tournament! The whole purpose of All-Stars is to give all those Professionals a relaxed/fun setting to play in and not really care. It's so much more fun to watch the bonus game modes and see their hilarious picks than watch them be competitive. Please reconsider this decision.

MyamiGames10/3/2017, 4:33:14 PM5 votes

Don't Change plis All buy Fun modes..no need more copetitve challengs

Eleshakai10/4/2017, 2:56:30 PM5 votes

I don't mind having more competitive events... but I really liked that the All-Star Event was more of a fun display than just a second version of Worlds. It created a change of pace that was really appreciated.

It was probably good for the Pros as well - since reminding themselves that the game is fun is probably healthy for them once in a while ;)

TexasCarlos210/6/2017, 4:33:00 AM4 votes

What’s the point of the tournament now? I literally just finished watching all the all stars games from last year again because they’re fun and enjoyable. Who doesn’t love watching all those game modes????? What are y’all thinking?!???

Tolkmit10/3/2017, 8:53:00 PM4 votes

The players will all be on vacation, not practicing constantly and keeping up with the meta. Saying this will be a competitive tournament does not make it so.

Rioas10/5/2017, 5:39:28 AM4 votes

I really wish this was our "for fun event" not only is it going to make things less enjoyable to watch (tandem mode was possibly the greatest thing ive seen) but it will also give more stress to the players, they enjoy the entertainment value as much as the rest of us. league is serious enough as it is, everyone needs to blow off steam now and then.

mochibuni10/5/2017, 2:17:26 AM3 votes

All I can think of is Froggen saying, "I was told we were going to have fun. I did not have fun."

But honestly that has been the point of All Stars, for it to be fun. I thought MSI was supposed to be serious and All Stars relaxed. I had an absolute blast when I went a few years ago, with Huni screaming and going after everyone in tandem mode. I wish that tone would have been kept, unless the pros expressed not liking it.

Guyy Fieri10/3/2017, 2:24:02 PM3 votes

Somebody wanna let me know why Brazil gets a spot instead of CIS??!! Albus Nox Luna anybody? Not to mention the CIS squad represented the Wildcards at All-Stars 2015. I just don't get why we would have Brazil but not CIS

Whisper8710/4/2017, 7:18:32 PM3 votes

I feel like this change is just fine. I mean, if you want to watch the pros goof around, go watch their streams in the off season or between splits. They play against other pros a lot of the time even in solo q. Honestly I like the idea of Riot gearing towards the more serious fan base. There are those of us who play the game not just to kill stuff, but to get better every match. Who watch pro play not just to be entertained, but to learn. And who despite taking the game too seriously, will never be a pro player. Those kinds of fans and players deserve to be catered to as well. And I think we all should like that idea of the "perfect team" from one region going against the "perfect team" from another region in a serious atmosphere. Give us some fuel for those "EU is better than NA" debates. Anyone who's ever done a fantasy draft to start their franchise mode in Madden NFL video games will appreciate this change.

Aerostaticus10/3/2017, 4:56:15 PM2 votes

And oh, please discontinue rift rivals as its absolutely useless
