October marks the climax of every League of Legends Season: Worlds. As we get closer and closer to the 2015 World Championship, matches come in a flurry, and sometimes it's hard to keep track of what's happening. Many teams have played through Regionals and punched their ticket in the past few weeks, and we're here to help you catch up if you need a refresher.

Who is playing at Worlds?

Top teams from Korea, China, Taiwan/Hong Kong/Macau, North America, and Europe receive direct invitations to Worlds, while squads from Wildcard regions qualify via an International Wildcard Tournament.

Three teams from North America, Europe, Korea, and China qualify, while two from Taiwan/Hong Kong/Macau qualify. Two teams from International Wildcard regions qualify.

The teams attending Worlds are:

What are they playing for?

In addition to international pride and glory, teams are competing for the chance to be the 2015 World Champions, the Summoner's Cup, and a prize pool of over $2,000,000 USD. Teams will earn prize money based on their finish in the event.

  • World Champion - $1,000,000 USD
  • 2nd place - $250,000 USD
  • 3rd / 4th place - $150,000 USD
  • 5th - 8th place - $75,000 USD
  • 9th - 12th place - $45,000 USD
  • 13th - 16th place - $25,000 USD

Tournament Format

Worlds is played out in two stages: A Group Stage followed by a Knockout Stage.

Group Stage

There are four groups comprised of four teams each, and a number of rules that dictate which teams can be in which groups.

[[{"fid":"19080","view_mode":"full","fields":{"format":"full","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":"","field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":""},"tagName":"IMG","src":"http%3A//admin.prod.lolesports.com/s3/files/styles/full_width_scale/public/Group%2520Stage%2520Pool%2520Structure_0.jpg%3Fitok%3D0hT6S5bu","type":"media","attributes":{"class":"media-element file-full","height":"590","width":"960"}}]]

The above graphic illustrates the core policy about group distribution. Each group may only have one team from any given region (no two teams from the same region will play in Groups). The No. 1 seeds from NA, EU, CN, and KR will be in different groups, and other teams are distributed based on perceived and historical strengths.

The exact placements will be determined by random draw. The Group Draw Show will take place September 12, at 1pm (-5 GMT) Pacific Time or 22:00 (+1 GMT) Central European Time. You can find out exactly who your favorite teams will be playing in the Groups then.

The format of the Group Stage is a Best of 1, double Round Robin -- this means each team in a group plays all other teams in that group twice. The top two teams from each group will advance to the Knockout Stage, while the bottom two teams will be eliminated.

Knockout Stage

The Knockout Stage is also colloquially referred to as the Bracket Stage. At this stage, the event changes to a Single Elimination bracket. The top two teams from each Group are placed in the Quarterfinals based on their Group finish.

Additionally, in the Knockout Stage, the format changes to Best of 5 matches instead of the Best of 1s from the Group Stage. However, similar to the Group Stage, there are some rules that regulate which teams can play each other in the Quarterfinals and Semifinals.

[[{"fid":"19081","view_mode":"full","fields":{"format":"full","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":"","field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":""},"tagName":"IMG","src":"http%3A//admin.prod.lolesports.com/s3/files/styles/full_width_scale/public/Knockout%2520Stage%2520Structure_0.jpg%3Fitok%3Dmg4bawV5","type":"media","attributes":{"class":"media-element file-full","height":"689","width":"960"}}]]

No two teams from the same group can be placed on the same half of the bracket (meaning, they would not play until the Finals). In addition, each Quarterfinal will feature one No. 1 seed and one No. 2 seed from Groups. This organization rewards the higher seeds for their performance in the Groups, and prevents rematches before the Finals.

Using this guide, the teams will be matched up randomly.

The winner of the Knockout Stage will be crowned our 2015 World Champion!

Just 1 million? Thats enough to buy all league skins, i think that's our dream right?

1 millions spread between 5 players a coach and an owner at the very least

IIHaydenBII18 votes

most money comes from the sponsors anyway.

Humble2Him11 votes

Yes, and you have to remember that that is 1million, plus the regionals prize money.

However, this is still a free to play game (It's not like Riot is Blizzard that can take WoW money and throw it at Heros of the Storm until people play it).

Technically you will have taxes, then it goes to the organization, then from that the organization 100% decides how to spread the money, as this is a prize for the team, unlike how salary works for individual players.

It is why Royal Club (the version that was beaten by SKT in season 3) got so much shit, because they players were paid out so little, and at least 2 players were paid nothing (it is documented, just do a google search).

So even if it were 3 million, the players will likely see the exact same small amount because of greedy ass organizations. I mean look at Faker and his streaming deal, he sees VERY little of the money because it goes to the organization first, and him maybe 3rd because of how contracts in Korea work.

(sorry for the long winded whatever. Just thought I'd go into more detail as it is sadly worse than most assume, at least in the two biggest and most likely to win regions of China and Korea that we have to base this info on previously)

This is not about money. This is far bigger than some economic favor. This is about hearts and minds. Dreams and hopes. It is about honor, respect, glory, and triumph. Overcoming all obstacles and oppositions, both internal and external. It is about succeeding where before you would fail. It's about exceeding the expectations of what is thought to be possible. It is about proving yourself, to yourself, for yourself and your brothers at your side.

This is about Self Improvement and Self Refinement. Making a Legacy for yourself that will outlive any paper, gold, or silver. This is about changing history. Honoring your country and your family. It's about sending the world that message.

NFL - Players get an extra $64,000 for winning the Superbowl. MLB - Players get $0 extra for winning the World Series. NHL - Players get $0 extra for winning the Stanley Cup.

I think that if the players even get to split half the grand prize for winning worlds ($100k) with the rest going to their organization, that is a pretty decent bonus considering E-Sports is in it's infancy and these other major sports leagues have been around for decades.

Mewyabby7 votes

Well that's just not true.

MLB has a bonus. NBA has a bonus. NHL has a bonus.

And the orgs don't take the player's pay. Even if they do, for example, in baseball, it's up to the players to decide.

Because they're workers with rights.

eSports needs to learn from sports on LABOR DAY ffs.

Dane Belthound5 votes

NFL players make hundreds of thousands a year. MLB players make hundreds of thousands to millions. Esports players aren't raking in that kind of cash.

Azor Ahai 010 votes

The top LoL players are making hundreds of thousands per year. You have to compare e-sports to these leagues when they were in their INFANCY! The TOP paid MLB player (Ty Cobb) was making about $10,000 in 1913 (about $250k now) which was 44 years after the MLB was founded. The TOP LoL player (Faker) made about $300k according to one site I saw. Again only a handful of years after the founding of the LoL LCS Series. There are scores of MLB teams. There are not nearly as many LoL teams.

lol all of dis and DOTA2 prize pool is still like 10mil for the winner (i was not including the other prizes, i realize it was like 19 mil total)

mattchew8612 votes

dota's prize pool is made up almost entirely from players donations though. riot does nothing like this. if they did the prize pool would be significantly higher. or make limited edition skins and a portion of all money went to the prize pool it would be a lot higher too.

Eleshakai6 votes

Riot couldn't get away with that. Valve can because Valve can get away with ANYTHING... Riot would be seen as greedy SOBs if they tried. The advantages of having a massive group of fanboys who will forgive literally ANYTHING you do as a company, I guess.

Groot2C7 votes

I don't really think any of them care about the Prize pool size. They already get paid the highest out of any Esport, and have a much more stable career vs games like DOTA or CoD. Even though DOTA has a 12 million dollar prize pool, it's not spread out very well and it's all concentrated at the top, there's not much trickle down.

Hellman12 votes

The prize pool for the TI5 (dota) was 18 million dollars and 16/20 went home with money.

EXsource4 votes

This was also money Valve bribed their fans into giving to the pros through in game crap in the compendium rather than putting up their own cash.

At least Rito puts up their own prize pool.

not enough people bought skins thats why

jewliciousness11 votes

H2K literally has no chance of winning. I love Cloud 9 but let's face it, they have no chance. Take that and realize that H2K has about the same chance as Cloud 9. Seeing as they couldn't even challenge Origen who could barely challenge Fnatic (and it took them until the finals to do so), they're pretty handicapped going in.

TurquoiseYoshi63 votes

If C9 fans are allowed to believe in their team, I'm allowed to believe in my team.

Yea! stand up for your rights man! C9 will win jew (its his username not my discrimination), and h2k has a chance!!!

H2K and C9 are in the same pool as the wild card teams. Which is pretty fair, but I'd probably place both of them as "unlucky draws" for whomever gets grouped with them. Just plain making it out of groups would be a pretty big Mighty Ducks story on its own.

EDIT: H2K would've probably been third seed if Origen had been in the LCS for the Spring split. What I actually said about H2K originally was wrong.
