Vaevictus should be in trouble for their poorly planned publicity stunt
This is a long one so either hold on tight we're goin for a ride, or you can skip on down to the bottom and read my lil tl;dr if you already know the situation.
I was almost tempted to believe ROX should be getting the scrutiny they're getting, until I looked past misinformed headlines and random board posts.
First off, I agree that ROX was discriminating against Vaevictus BUT it wasn't for them being girls, it was for them being DIAMOND on Russian servers in PRO PLAY I watched the VOD to see the bans and skim through the game to see if what I thought was going to happen happened and, to no surprise it played out just how i thought.
ROX banned those support champs (who weren't all even female like some people on boards and in headlines are trying to convey) because literally no matter what they banned they were going to crush the heck out of Vaevictus, and that's exactly what happened. They outplayed VS in macro, mechanics, just in pretty much every way I could find just through skimming the game. They didn't even disrespect hard in game like Vega did either. This whole debacle is over BANNED SUPPORT CHAMPS they banned most like to prove no matter what VS picked ROX was gonna wipe up with them, and it's being blown up and misconstrued.
Second, Vaevictus should be considered wholly in the wrong for even pulling this scheme for a good couple reasons
Reason 1: VS screwed up and screwed real pro players over
In a reddit post about Vaevictus' roster change, a coach in the LCL, RainbowBunny, comments on the issue: https://www.reddit.com/r/leagueoflegends/comments/ap65r4/one_of_the_longest_standing_teams_in_lcl/ (it's in the first comment) If you don't want to head to the link tho, I'll give a little tl;dr Basically VS just ROYALLY screwed up, they were supposed to switch up a player or two for the next split, as most teams do when their roster is stale, but instead of doing that they just dropped their whole roster out of the blue to try and sell their slots and duck out of the split. This was so late it screwed those players over from getting signed anywhere else this split and they ended up not being able to sell the slot in the LCL. I think we all can gather what happened next here lmao
Reason 2: This move hurts the view of girls playing on pro teams (bear with me here lol)
Now there's 5 actual decent players in the wind and a roster of diamond level girls playing on a pro team. PLEASE DON'T GET ME WRONG I would absolutely love to see more girls break into pro league, it would be great to see more girls in pro league, it would inspire more to try and move up to the highest levels too.
IF they were good enough players to compete with those pro teams.
There's no argument they aren't bad players, they're diamond and that's something to be proud of compared to much of the league population, but anyone who consistently plays, watches streams and pro play and knows about the game a bit know that there can be a surprisingly stark difference from D2 and below to the top of the ladder in a lot of cases, and this is no different at all. Throwing these players into a pro league purely for publicity because they can since there's no risk of them getting relegated is a pretty gross practice and hurts professional integrity of the pro scene, Riot for allowing it to happen the way it did, and those girls and other girls professional integrity as well unfortunately. It's genuinely saddening to see it happen this way rather than seeing it happen just like every pro player getting into the scene.
Girls deserve the opportunity just as much as guys do to be in pro play and I hope girls that are good enough to compete in the highest level get those opportunities as well, but this just isn't the way to make it happen. Girls should not be used for publicity just to end up pretty much purposely humiliating them which is really sad. Sure those 5 get a chance to play on the big stage but what are they going to be able to come out and show for it? They've just been getting pummeled and people are gonna just tune out every game they play since it's gonna be a stomp, and barely anyone likes watching that kind of thing when it's in a situation like this, so the whole stunt truly just kinda ends up coming back around to hurting those girls professional careers :/
tl;dr -ROX did seem to violate leagues rules against discrimination in game, but most likely because they are diamond level players rather than because they're girls. -Vaevictus screwed over actual pro players to sell their slot in the LCL and decided to pull a publicity stunt when they couldn't -More girls in pro play is a great thing, but girls SHOULD NOT be straight up used for a publicity stunt after a blatant failure in judgement by Vaevictus (here's a link to the shorter article I used as source material, the reddit link is above - https://dotesports.com/league-of-legends/news/lcl-all-female-roster-vaevictis-esports) -Riot letting this happen should give them motivation to put rules into place to prevent stuff like this from happening and hurting league's professional integrity
It just irritates the hell outta me that this is all happening because Vaevictus made a mistake and decided to 'fix' it by pulling a stupid stunt that hurts themselves as an esports organization, alienates any audience they had, potentially hurts Riot as well, and more importantly humiliates these girls just to try and get some viewership. I would still love to see more girls in pro league but this just isn't the way.
I'd love to hear other opinions as well, as mine I'm sure is different from others on this, as I've seen. Also let me know if there's anything I missed/need to edit! [vlad-salute]
Edit 1: Still looking into the situation too, all the bans were champs Vaevictus played a lot during last season
