Lane Swap Overlay Covers Map - DO NOT cover the map please!
Recently, Riot has introduced a lane swap overlay their broadcast. The overlay allows the views to see top and bottom lane in "Picture in Picture" view while focusing on mid lane. Conceptually, this is a good idea because it provides a view each lane.
However, the lane swap overlay covers the map. The map provides all of the information necessary in a lane swap situation. It allows the views to see all of the positions of each champion in the game. This is important when analyzing a game. Some information is lost when this is covered up.
For example, in CLG vs NV Game 1, at 5 mins and 12 seconds into the game Nidalee paths into the jungle. Then the overlay covers the map. Nidalee is not seen again until 5 mins and 30 seconds into the game when Nidalee enters the PiP view. This is standard lane swap play. It can easily be noticed without the lane swap overlay by just looking at the map.
However, if Nidalee had chose to path through the jungle further and risk a gank mid that information would be lost in the lane swap overlay. Information such as: what path Nidalee took, was there hesiation?, did Nidalee place any wards?, and did Nidalee walk through any wards? All of this information would be provided by the map.
I believe the map is a vital part of the viewer's experience in watching a game of league of legends. Without it key details can be lost. I do not believe the lane swap overlay provides greater information than the mini map does.
Personally, I watch the mini map most of the time when I am watching a game of league of legends. It provides a broader view of the state of the game. I analyze positioning, rotations, and jungle pathing. I only play close attention to the main screen when there is action or something relevant is happening.
UPDATE: They changed it so you can see the map now! Thank you Riot.
