Quarterfinals bracket set as SKT and C9 advance

Riot··2 votes·17,133 views

Every single North American fan came into Worlds 2016 today thinking the same thing: why oh why didn’t Group Stages end after Week 1?

It was a mixed bag for NA. On the one hand, the region lost their great hope in TSM. On the other hand, Cloud9 managed to make it to the Quarterfinals to keep the dream alive.

It was a nailbiter of a finish here at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco. North America has probably never cheered as loudly for SK Telecom T1 as they did in the final game of the day. Their hopes and dreams rested on the shoulders of the Korean giants. It would be logical to bank on them coming away with the win. Though if there is one thing that this tournament has lacked, it’s logic.

In the end SKT was able to end their losing streak to the Flash Wolves, and the Korean kryptonite made a graceful exit from the competition -- they went down fighting. It was a night that proved that the cycle of Worlds continues. Korea will live, others will die. They’ve heard of your “gap” and they’re not particularly interested in it. They’re now the only region to have three representatives in the Quarterfinals, and they did it with style -- all three teams are No. 1 seeds, which means it’s possible that all three teams will reach the Semifinals.

[[{"fid":"23440","view_mode":"centered","fields":{"format":"centered","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":"","field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":""},"tagName":"IMG","src":"http%3A//admin.prod.lolesports.com/s3/files/styles/centered/public/worlds_gs_10092016_mw_yw28962_1.jpg%3Fitok%3DB-B31mPh","type":"media","attributes":{"class":"media-element file-centered","height":"661","width":"992"}}]]

Whatever happens now, Cloud9 will forever be the saving grace of North America here at Worlds 2016. It wasn’t perfect, but it was enough for them to move on to the Quarterfinals. So let’s have a look at the takeaways from Group B:

  • Every time SKT has attended a World Championship, they’ve won. This alone should be scary, but the way they played in the Group Stage should only make them scarier. Their games were clean. They consistently won lane, and their macro game was excellent. Their only downfall came against the Flash Wolves, and any future challenger to SKT’s throne should try to learn as much from that game as possible. Out of all the Korean teams here at Worlds, they traversed the Group Stage with the least amount of mistakes, and should be considered one of the favorites going forward.

  • Cloud9 woke up today as the last great hope for North America. NA held their breath as C9 dropped games to both SKT and the Flash Wolves to start the day. We clenched our buttcheeks as their game against I May dragged on, and it looked like Cloud9 might throw away their huge lead. It felt like an eternity, but in the end Cloud9 came away with the win, and the whole of NA exhaled. Their qualification wasn’t exactly convincing. They struggled to make plays when they fell behind -- the Flash Wolves game being the odd exception -- and if they want to make it past the Quarterfinals, learning to create and capitalize on openings is something they’ll need to improve on.

  • The term “wildcard” gets thrown around a lot at Worlds, but if any team was a true wildcard coming into this tournament, it was I May. They really don’t care about your meta. Kennen support? Sure. Kha’Zix in the jungle? Let’s go. They played their own style and with it managed to take two games off the Flash Wolves -- heavily shaping the outcome of the group. For a team that went from Challenger to the World Championship over the course of a split, this was a respectable showing. If they take this experience back with them to the LPL, and continue building on their strengths, then this won’t be the last time you see them at Worlds.

  • I feel like Flash Wolves could use the immortal words from “Glengarry Glen Ross:” Always be closing, always be closing, always be closing. They need to burn those words into their minds as they head back to the LMS. This tournament was sand slipping through the Flash Wolves’ fingers. They were among the most dominant early game team out of any in the competition. They got first turret gold and first blood in nearly all their games but failed to capitalize on all that hard work. They will continue to be a dominant force in the LMS, but if they want to be a true Worlds contender, they’ll have to sharpen a killer instinct and be ready to close out games when it matters most.

Now, we enter Quarterfinals territory. And we’re already jumping on the hype train with matches as good as these:

  • SK Telecom T1 vs. Royal Never Give Up
  • ROX Tigers vs. Edward Gaming
  • H2K vs. Albus NoX Luna
  • Samsung Galaxy vs. Cloud9

Worlds returns on October 13th as the Quarterfinals kick off in Chicago. See you there!

If they hey beat SSG, they don't have to prep for semis.

You C9 fans are going to have to give them a lot more than energy. Lol. Just remember how much different the 3 seed from Korea is compared to the 3 seed of North America. C9 will take 0 games off SSG. MAYBE 1 and that's me just being nice thinking that SSG will have to get used to how C9 plays which is completely different from the other NA team they faced, TSM. Also remember that NA got to quarterfinals from a technicality. C9 wouldn't have beat Flash Wolves if Flash Wolves beat SKT. Just be grateful if they take one game off of Korea's 3rd seeded team.

It showed the sides mixed up. It showed C9-SSG and SKT-RNG on the same side, which isn't right (and isn't possible).

Every year the LMS gets so much hype (for some reason) and then they always lose... I don't get it, I never have.

TheSequelsRBad2 votes

To be fair, they have had tournaments where they showed up pretty heavily. Season 5 worlds, last MSI, Season 2 worlds where they came out of nowhere and won the whole thing.

I would say they are as good as NA and EU, but not really any better. They are also absurdly inconsistent.

Yordle Xayah2 votes

"Showed up pretty heavily"? I beg to differ:

At MSI, FW barely qualified to the knockout stage, being only above the Wildcard team and G2, a team that basically didn't exist in that tournament. They then lost 1 - 3 to CLG.

In Worlds 2015, FW went 4 - 2 in a group with PAIN, then proceeded to get 1 - 3 by Origen. AHQ went out of groups in second, having to beat C9 in a tie breaker to even make it out and then got demolished by SKT 0 - 3.

Gotta also point out that FW came into Worlds 2016 taking EU's seed as head of group, and they ended up in no less than 4th place. It's the first time in the history of Worlds that a head of group ends up in 4th place in groups. They also lost to IM playing a sub, that then swapped positions...

I'm sorry, but I just don't see it. All I see is a region with the same two teams every time that barely make it out of groups (sometimes) and that then fail to deliver real results. The best they got was 2015 QF, and they went 1 - 6 there, as I mentioned above.

As for 2012 Worlds, that argument holds a much water as saying FNC should be in Worlds this year because they won Season 1. You just can't use such old results as an indication of a region's current strength.

I seriously don't understand the LMS hype, specially this year.

TheSequelsRBad1 votes

While I will concede they failed pretty spectacularly this year, don't forget that they 2-0'd Koo tigers( a worlds finalist) in worlds 2015, that AHQ looked the most competitive against SKT of any non Korean team of that same year, that they are the only non-korean region to win worlds, (I don't count season 1, because it was only NA and EU, it was more of a Battle of the Atlantic than the worlds of today.) and the have shown that they can at least compete with top regions, even when they are slumping.

To answer your point about 2012 worlds, I am not using this as an argument of their current strength, I am just pointing out that they have had their successes, same as NA and EU, and over the extended history of League of Legends e-sports, I would still assert they are as good as the western teams.

Yordle Xayah1 votes

Even if I conceded your point about them being on the same ground as EU/NA (which I don't fully agree with) but even then, is that worth all the hype they got this year from all over the place? Actually no, scratch that. LMS casters said they didn't look too well.

I called out H2K and C9 going above them both in groups this year, and SO MANY put em qualifying instead of C9/H2K and I just never understood based on what they were making those predictions.

The most I'd give the LMS, is the same level as 2nd seeds from NA and EU when performing well, and as low as LAN/LAS when playing their worst.

I've never seen the LMS teams play at the level that FNC and OG had last year. Then I'd understand the hype they got this year.

TheSequelsRBad1 votes

I will concede they were overhyped this year, but so was NA, and both fell down, the only difference is LMS fell apart even more completely. I think the real thing to draw from this worlds is that Korea is just as strong as ever. I don't think much has changed in regional strength, except for EU being weaker than normal.

Lena Slayer1 votes

"I've never seen the LMS teams play at the level that FNC and OG had last year. Then I'd understand the hype they got this year."

FNC and OG went 0-6 in last year semi. 0-6 is a achievement in itself.

keep in mind that FW were the only tame to take a game off SKT this world so far. and H2K only make it out of group stage cause there were no korean team in their group lol. i just hope they dont the ball to a wildcard team.

with showing like G2, EU dont deserve their 3rd slot. imo top 4 team from MSI should get 3 slot. those slot should be fought for, not a given too.

what sad is even if a wild card team win world this year, they will still get 3rd rate treatment next year.

Steadygoing1 votes

Just curious, but what exactly has NA accomplished? I'm only asking because you're making the argument that NA/EU are ahead of LMS. The only international tournament they showed up in was this year's MSI. Other than that, I really can't think of something they won besides winning Spring and Summer splits in their own region.....

Also, how did LMS fall harder than NA this year PartyPanda? #1 TSM and tournament favorites fall to #3 seeded Korea, SSG team and #2 Chinese team, RNG. #2 CLG fall to wildcard Albus Nox twice. #3 Cloud9 lose to a struggling Flash Wolves extremely convincingly and only get in because of a technicality. If FW beat SKT in last game, C9 lose to FW. Luckily, SKT is a very, very good team and have too much pride to throw a game.

TheSequelsRBad1 votes

NA hasn't accomplished much tbh, however I will list TSM winning IEM Katowice, Cloud9 forcing a tiebreaker vs Najin White Shield in 2014, then having a close competitive series vs Samsung Blue that same year where they almost made it to 5 games. Also, TSM was one of the 2 teams to take a game off of Samsung White, and of course there was CLG at MSI.

Cloud9 also had a decent showing the one time they made MSI, considering they had a sub, Many people at the time thought that if hai had not had a collapsed lung, he would have led C9 to finals.

And I don't think NA/EU are ahead of LMS, I said they are about equal. But I think LMS is worse at the moment, mainly because they had a lower score than both the NA and EU team in their group. When the number 2 NA team plays better in groups then the number 1 LMS, it is a pretty strong indication of relative regional strength at the time of games played.

Am I the only one who thinks the bracket is a tad bit unfair to SKT, RNG, ROX, and EDG?

Fowus2 votes

why

Reaxetion2 votes

I think what s/he is saying is that all the talent seems to be on one side of the bracket, having the predicted two best teams, plus the defending world champions. To that I say, nah. H2k, ANX, and SSG have to loose to cloud 9. At least the other 4 teams have a chance at the finals. [slayer-jinx-wink]

Steadygoing1 votes

Agreed. Look at one side and you have the #1 and #2 seed of both Korea and China. On the other side, you have a #3 seed SSG and C9 and #2 seed H2K with a wildcard team. Fowus...how do you not see how that is easier. Lol. Honestly, the ONLY way H2K make it out of quarter finals is they don't get paired with the Chinese teams. And they got Albus, by some lucky technicality. C9 has zero chance of making it out of quarterfinals unless they put on the show of a lifetime and pull something out of their ass. Right now, all 3 Korean teams look stronger than everybody else. I'll throw H2K a bone just because they went 4-0 but they also had a super weak group.
