Why did North America have to compete during the Play in stage of MSI?
I was just curious why NA had to compete during the Play in stage to get to the round robin stages. Did it have to do with the last worlds performance or what?

Because we're hilariously that bad. That's why.
Because in the last 3 years they were weakest of 4 major regions.
It had to do with their world's performance.
Based on previous world's performances as a region, NA and TW were the weakest, so they had to play the play in stage. Sucks, but hopefully it's another motivation to do better at worlds.
WORLDS and MSI from previous years if I'm not mistaken was also a reason on why NA had to play in the ....... play in, but NA made it out of that mess thank god so ( drinks a beer) here's to that at least.
