Best of 2 & Best of 3

I know how the best of two works, but how does the points work for best of 3?

Best of 2:

2-0 = 3 Points 1-1 = 1 Point 0-2 = 0 Points

Best of 3: ????

Best of 3: whoever wins 2 of the 3 games just wins the series. Nothing fancy about it.

I am competing in an amateur league where all games are best of 3. Now, they have a rule that says that if a new team joins, this team will earn 1 point per each week missed.

How can you explain the point system to make it fair for other teams?

How do the points work in general? Not all leagues work the same, even if they are still Bo3.

That seems pretty odd for a best of 3, which would typically end immediately if a team won 2 in a row. Maybe they're using the term "best of 3" incorrectly?

Bo3s can technically have a point system depending on the league. If you look at CBLoL (the Brazilian LoL League), they use Bo3, but they have a point per win system, so even if you lose a series, you can still get a point for winning a game. Obviously the LCS doesn't do this, but some Leagues can choose to run this system which could be the case.

If this were the case for the amateur league they're in, I think the new team rule is kind of poorly designed since a team can be the worst, but still be higher than other teams just because they missed several weeks worth of play (they should rank teams based on win percentage anyways so any new team can start completely unbiased and still rise/fall to a fairly accurate ranking).

That's how MTG tournaments go. Bo3 and you earn 3 points per win.
