varus was literally designed to be a mid lane adc. for some reason it didnt work out so well at the time of his release. so people just stuck with playing him on bot. i dont remeber why, but might have been a lot of assasins going mid at the time.

but hes easily on equal footing with low mobility mages due to his similar laning pattern focused on long range poke and zoning.

You're right that it's because of the assassins. He's far too vulnerable to all assassins in the game due to his extreme immobility.

I dunno about putting Varus mid, I mean he would get beaten by any of the mobile midlaners IE: Ahri, Yas, Zed.

He has trouble against a mobile enemy, but he does have long range poke to counter this.
