[UPDATE 8/23/2014: See below for new information on the Worlds Reveal Show!]

Welcome to Worlds

If you watch the League of Legends 2014 World Championship, here’s what we can promise you. There will come a moment over the next couple of months that defies what you’ve come to expect from esports. It’s not entirely clear when this moment will come. Perhaps it will be during the Regional Qualifiers, when teams will make one last-bid effort to continue their season on the international stage. Or maybe it’ll come during the Group stage, where each region’s victors will test their mettle against a new set of international challengers. Then again, it could happen during Finals, where last year’s matches were viewed by more than 32 million fans.

Or more likely, it’ll happen during all of the above.

We don’t know when it will happen, but it will happen. And we know this because these types of eye-opening moments--moments defined by emotional intensity, where fans from around the globe cry out with one voice, in one common language, that what they have seen has risen to the level of true entertainment--they happen every year when League heads to the global stage. Welcome to Worlds 2014, where every moment counts.

What is Worlds?

OK, so what’s all the hype about? The League of Legends World Championship is a once-a-year tournament that can be broken down into three distinct phases. We begin with Regionals, which commence on August 7 and conclude on September 7. There are six Regional tournaments in total, one for each of the five major leagues as well as an International wildcard, and each region has its own specific way of advancing through this stage of the tournament. You can get the full answer to “What is Regionals?” from this handy guide.

The second phase of the Worlds tournament is referred to as Groups, and this year will be split between Taipei, Taiwan, and the city-state of Singapore. In this stage, the top two or three teams (depending on the region) compete in a Round Robin-style tournament. There are four groups in total (four teams in each group), and they’re populated based on seeding from the Regionals phase as well as a randomized placement system that will be completed in early August.

The group draw will occur according to the procedure illustration above. Worlds qualifying teams will be sorted into each pool according to their regional seeding. Pool 1 is a "protected" pool of No. 1 seeds from China, Europe, Korea, and North America. Pool 2 will contain the #2 and #3 seeds from those regions, in addition to the GPL's top two teams. Pool 3 will be composed of the No. 3 seeds from North America and Europe as well as the International Wildcard tournaments.

Each of the four groups will contain one team from Pool 1, two teams from Pool 2, and one team from Pool 3. Teams will be drawn randomly from the pools into groups. There is a "region limit" governing the composition of the groups: No two teams from the same region can inhabit the same group.

Tune in to the Worlds Reveal Show on September 8 at 1pm PDT on lolesports.com for the worldwide premiere of the four groups for Worlds 2014! Don't miss out on this exciting unveiling as well as analysis and commentary on what to look forward to in the group stage.

Sixteen teams enter the Group stage, but only eight advance. Refer to the above graphic for information on how teams will be placed coming out of Groups.

The preeminent phase of the Worlds tournament heads to Korea, the home of professional esports. The knockout-style bracket is slated to begin on October 3, and will culminate on October 19, when the two top teams in the world head to Sangam Stadium in Seoul to compete for the Summoner’s Cup and a $1 million purse. Expect more information on this stage of the tournament soon.

What’s on the line?

You mean, beyond proving one’s superiority in front of tens of millions of people? (Seriously--the 2013 Worlds final drew a viewership of more than 32 million people!)

There’s the money, of course. More than $2 million is up for grabs this year, with the tournament victors walking home with $1 million to split. Second place nets $250,000, while the third- and fourth-place finishers walk away with $150,000. In fact, all teams who make it to the Group phase will earn a cash prize--but let’s be real, everyone wants that cool million.

And then there’s the Summoner’s Cup. It’s large, it’s shiny, and on it are etched the names of all League of Legends World Championship winners. In short, it’s these players’ key to immortality.

I CAN'T FREAKING WAIT TO WATCH WORLDS!!! I've watched all of them live since Season 1 and everything has gotten better since then. Besides RIOT organizing the event in a more fascinating venue each and every time (Holy Crap - the finals stadium of a soccer world cup!), the excitement all over the globe is just amazing!

Gummy worms are good as fuck. Especially the big juicy world's largest gummy worm from amazon. Delicious. Would you eat Velkoz if they made him as a gummy snack treat? I know I would.

They record and archive most if not all of their broadcasts. You should be able to watch them at your leisure afterwards, if watching it live isn't a big deal.

This could be worded better. But yes I agree, Riot really should make a big statement by not supporting Twitch at Worlds year. Maybe their CEO will wake up and realize how badly he is ruining his business and stop pretending everything is okay (if you read his AMA from today it's quite evident he is pretty much delusional at this point).

Also that epic reverse neck-beard of his needs more attention. Was I the only person to notice it? O.o http://i.imgur.com/GMhAhEY.jpg

Only 1million? I expected more from League ! thought they wanted to beat dota2

Amoebanator32 votes

Have you played dota2? League has nothing to prove.

Peppa Salt29 votes

Valve is a company that had experience like no other and League is a game made by 2 friends who didnt expect to be the biggest game in the world.

Trols go down2 votes

biggest game in the world? Wait you mean that League is better than Dota, Counter Strike, Assassin's Creed and other cool games? No, sir, no!

Make A Wish Kid15 votes

Actually, before you comment and bring your unresearched ( and wrong ) opinions to this post, just think about what you're reading...He said "the biggest", not "best". By that he means that League of Legends is one of the most popular games played at this time and it is, as it was rated officially the most played pc game in the world (based on stats from America and Europe) so please no, sir, no!

Tamarizz5 votes

So do I but this is more that "beating a game" its about who supports better the e-sports. Blizzard and Valve are a step forward on e-sports entertainment. Riot is doing well, really well, I love league, and I like the way riot is working with it. But yes still waiting for more e-sport support from them. Also remember Valve just have 2millions from their pocket, the rest of money (8millions) where money from players who bought items.

Only 2 million? yes i know it is quite a bit of dough but I thought you would have topped dota 2?

TomatoCandy2 votes

As said earlier, Dota 2 / Valve had 2 million from themselves, and the other 8 million was from a package that you could buy for that game. And people really really really wasted money on that .... (Don't remember the nameof that package) .

Cmen RaBBid6 votes

People didnt waste money on the COMPENDIUM they chose to buy it. it gives you new stuff, donates money to the international gives you bonus xp and more. people need to stop hating on dota 2 just because the prefer league. dota 2 is a very good game and so is league, why can people not see that. besides the compendium was only 5$ and you could only purchase it once so people did not waste money on it, it goes to show how league and dota 2 have very large community sizes (obviously league being larger)

TSM not Maagas7 votes

You guys do realize that players earn money from playing in the LCS. It's not like, "Well guys, we're all going to starve until we reach worlds." Also, do you guys read the information. In DOTA2 tourneys, yes the grand prize is five mil, but the Overall price of Worlds for LOL is 5 mil, (Not counting that LCS money or other side money). There's tons of benefits (At least right now) for League of Legends Pro Players. One: If some Pro Players were to be "skill capped" They can always stream to earn extra dough. Two: Riot prefers retired Pro Players as shout casters and Analyst. I think because Riot is generally a good company and doesn't want to completely turn their backs to players who are skill capped. If it was Valve. They'll fkn leave these guys to the streets. I think the overall price Riot seeped into this season is well above 10 mil.

2m$ Really? Dota worlds had over 10m this year....so now I really think Dota>LoL.....it shows how much Valve wish to invest for their product to grow and evolve....when Riot just do the same they did last year....sad((

Do you even know how Valve gets their money to that? They invest keys only, they make chests that when someone buys key for that chest Valve takes as far as I know 50% of it and other 50% goes for eSports.

He didn't say anything about people wasting money, he was informing someone who didn't understand how money works.

For those people complaining about the cash prizes I'm going to point out that its a larger prize than one of the biggest sports events in the world. That's right I'm talking about the Superbowl. players on the wining team for the Superbowl get a small bonus of just less than $100,000 whereas the team wining the lcs gets 1 mill which if split among the five players who pulled of the wins would come out to ~ 200k each. Granted it takes more than 5 people to make a wining team for the lcs, and there are a lot more football players on a football team than in an lcs team, however individual gain wise, lcs players stand to make more off this championship than pro football players would for winning the Superbowl.(also keep in mind the fact that pro ball players can make millions on their contracts). All in all for a sport that's less than 10 years old, it's still a very nice prize.

I jst cant get why so low pull prize... Just 2Milions and there is 40Millon ppls who are playin LoL.... Why not like Dota2 Prize pull more than 10Millions... Riot so damn selfish :P

Brilliam Freeman19 votes

You do realise the dota 2 price pull was funded by Donators, contestants, customers and such? It's unbelievable they even managed to collect that much money over their championships. However, despite it, its not money amount that is easily achieved. And its not a like Riot or any company in the world is so rich that they can throw away 2 million like it was toilet paper. Jee willigers, it's almost like, again, that money is something you dont get so easily and even giving away 2 million is frigging amazing or/and generous.

in short, Riot is not selfish, you are just clueless about money and business.

TheTrumpCard5 votes

I think it's important to point out that the prize money is highly unlikely to actually be pulled from company pockets.

More Likely, the cash is from Sponsors, such as Coca-cola (why do you think they always say "And ofcourse we'd like to thank our friends over at Coca-cola?")

Valve and Riot are both getting similar cash from sponsors, but Compendium OP. That said, Riot can still win they just need to add in a good counter-play and it's gg. (I mean anything like that for league would make Dota's 11 mil look like cow turd)

Oh and please Convince ESPN that League >>> Dota, I mean that's the kindof thing that is actually going to make e-sports be embraced by a wider community. If people see Dota, they won't want to embrace it, even if the prize is 11 million dollars, the game is just wayyyyy too hardcore. People seeing League would be much more likely to be interested in and acceptive of the game.
