All-Star Event Day 1: 10 thoughts

The first day featured a lot of… yelling! The metalheads rocked out to the opening ceremony. The Spanish crowd erupted at every sighting of xPeke. Dash and Ibai combined to deliver some insane introductions to the 1v1 matchups. Day 1 embraced the mayhem.

Team Fire holds a 50 point lead over Team Ice thanks to strong team performances from the NA LCS All-Stars and the LCK All-Stars.

Here are 10 tidbits and thoughts from Day 1 of the All-Star Event:

1. Dash and IBai had to have made a bet prior to the day to out-shoutcast each other. It’s like that game kids play on the school bus where they increasingly say an obscenity a little louder until everyone around them is jaw-dropped in awe or confused. I thought it was beautiful. Those player intros for the 1v1 tournament captured the essence of the All-Star Event: mayhem, madness, and fun.

2. There are two kinds of support players: those who cringed watching their precious little ADC babies slaughter each other, and those who reveled in it. Those who have long been abused by ADCs who yell at them for missing a Targon proc only to miss five minions in the next wave. ADCs who trade with Caitlyn passive. Who can’t dodge skill shots and then say, “wtf help me.” Who flash forward because "worth." Watching all those ADCs smash each other to bits must have been at least a little therapeutic.

3. The winter map was dope. Mad props to the awesome company who worked on that -- I’m sure they only employ really winter-in-wonderland-wonderful kind of people.  

4. My predictions are 3-4 thus far for the 1v1 tournament. I should have just flipped a coin instead of developing a comprehensive analytical model to predict the results.

5. 3-4 is still better than 0-1, though, which is what happened to both of last year’s finalists, Doublelift and Bjergsen. Doublelift didn’t even know who We1less was -- and he still might not considering he got deleted.

6. Though they were routed by the LPL in the regional matchup, the GPL region’s Levi and Optimus both snatched victories in their 1v1 matchups. There’s at least some credence to the theory that the only difference between the regions is their macro understanding of the game.

7. That difference, though, is still rather large. Korea’s All-Star roster might not even be the 4th or 5th best team if it were to play in the 2017 LCK Spring Split, and yet they still managed to outmaneuver the LMS All-Stars. Korea confirmed spooky.

8. Mithy motions for a 30-ban system. Riot pls. Ban everything!

9. The Spanish crowd was fully hyped! They are capable of chanting more things than “TSM” which is something a lot of crowds could really work on -- or not. I’m not your mom.

10. In case you missed it, the All-Star into video was even more awesome to watch with a live band. And the special effects detailing the fire and ice motif. Especially the fire. I just really like fire.

How is ASE going so far?

It’s going good so far -- beautiful place! I haven’t had a chance to talk to fans or other players that much so far, though.

Who’s the one pro player you’d take with you in the event of a zombie apocalypse?

Faker because he’s a smart player, which probably means he’s smart in person, too. That gives me the best chance at surviving. He'd figure something out.

Do you have any memorable moments living at the EDG house?

The daily routine at the house makes every single day memorable. Our team is like a family. I’ll look back fondly on this one day.

If you could be as good at anything in the world as League of Legends, what would it be?

Computer science engineering. I think it’s cool and incredible what you can do with computers.

What’s something about you that’s kind of embarrassing?

I’m very messy. I throw a lot of stuff onto my bed -- clothes, toys, etc. I just dump it all on.

What champion do you think is most like you?

Ekko. First of all, it’s one of my favorite champions, and a lot of fans think I look like Ekko so they post a lot of pictures like that.
