Facing the Champions: The EU LCS Promotion Tournament

A time of attack and defense - Challengers and Champions face off for their spot in the 2017 EU LCS Spring Split.

With the 2016 Summer Split over, the EU Summer Promotion tournament is fast approaching - an opportunity for the top two Challenger Series teams to show us what they’ve got. Misfits and Millenium have earned their spots, but will they be able to forge a place for themselves among the Champions of the LCS? Or will Schalke 04, Origen and ROCCAT defend their LCS titles?

The Promotion tournament sets the top two CS teams against the three lowest ranked LCS teams in four Bo5 matchups. Matches will be broadcast on August 4, 5 and 7:

Thursday August 4 - 17:00 CEST

Match 1: ROCCAT (LCS #10) vs. Millenium (CS #2) - EULCS1

Friday August 5 - 17:00 CEST - Dual Stream

Match 2: FC Schalke 04 (LCS #8) vs. Match 1 winner - EULCS2
Match 3: Origen (LCS #9) vs. Misfits (CS #1) - EULCS1

Sunday August 7 - 17:00 CEST

Match 4: Match 2 Loser vs. Match 3 Loser - EULCS1

The winners from Match 2, Match 3 and Match 4 will qualify to compete in the 2017 EU LCS Spring Split. Will the current LCS teams be able to defend their title, or will there be new stars on the LCS stage next year? Tune in from Thursday at 17:00 CEST to find out.

I think OG and Misfits will get in, hehe. (Monte Cristo owns Misfits, so you already know xD)

As someone whose been a fan of challenger for a while, I entirely expect EU to not only be the most close, but also the most exciting of the two promo tournaments. Assuming Misfits (probably the best of the challenger teams in both NA and EU right now) and Schalke (who have better overall talent than the rest of the rosters) get LCS spots, that leaves millenium/roccat/OG to fight for the last one. Will be incredibly hard to predict who will get that final spot due to all teams being incredibly close, but if I had to give one of them a slight edge it'd be millenium due to the fact that they're the only one of the three teams who has been able to reliably close out games on a semi-consistent basis.

TLA and C9C are both essentially entire teams of LCS pros. Misfits are good (I'm a fan), but IDK that they're the best challenger team by any means. The 3 LCS teams competing really seemed to perform well below their potential in the split. With the threat of relegation, even ROC could be a pretty difficult team to beat if Steelback is on his game.

S04 and OG go through, Misfits probably get through after losing first set against OG.

Disagree with you entirely on the notion that the players of TLA are "pros" as although they have LCS experience, unless Piglet happens to 1v5 carry the game then it should go about as well as it did last split where the ember subs went 0-7 in place of the visa-issues-ed echo fox members.

Oh, and you're completely overreaching on roccat there. The instant they subbed out airwaks for memento (who to me, was like procxin from last split in which there either is or should be massive blooper reels of him making terrible yet funny throws) they essentially lost their entire early game. In a way, roccat is "OG-lite" right now only that quite a lot of people were expecting them to finish here. Assuming things go to plan and the more skilled teams win, Misfits should 3-0 or 3-1 OG, Schalke should 3-0 or 3-1 the winner of the mil/roc matchup (which I'm giving a slight edge to millenium on), and Millenium doing a 3-1 or 3-2 on OG. Origen may seem more talented, but with the sheer amount of almost random roster swaps they've had to endure this split (with xpeke seemingly coming into games whenever he damn-well pleases now) their lack of team synergy and sheer passiveness should hopefully be something Millenium can take advantage of. If they can't, then they realistically shouldn't be in the LCS anyways.
