Nilinor1 votesHere is the thing, for that comp and what the meta is, trundle was a pretty damn good pick.
FNC was using a carry top, so they had a triple threat damage, the only real thing that could hitch the plans is a tank top laner that could eat all the damage, so you bring in Trundle to destroy the armor/mr and be a minor tank ala Alistar for a little bit, long enough for them to eat through said tank and then destroy the rest of the team. If SK counter picked another damage top laner instead of maokai, Trundle would have been 5 kinds of useless outside of clutch pillars since his ult wouldn't have been useful at all.
Ugawa1 votesYeah it was highly situational but it worked incredibly well for Fnatic. The only thing I'd add to your comment is that even with the comp, it was vital they have the lane swap/fast push and the rek'sai ganks to get trundle his vision item and allow him to roam and help out his team. Otherwise, he just kinda sits in a 2v2 lane and doesn't do very much except get poked, which can cause the danger of the opposing team getting a large CS advantage bot
