TL;DR

  • MSI 2017 is going to São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on April 28 - May 21.
  • Worlds 2017 is heading to China including Wuhan, Guangzhou, and Shanghai from September 23 - October 29.
  • At the Finals on November 4, we’ll be crowning our new World Champions from the Beijing National Stadium aka the Bird’s Nest.
  • Starting this year, all 13 professional LoL Leagues will participate at MSI and Worlds.

The Future of International Competitive Events

In 2017, we’ll be breaking new ground as we bring the Mid-Season Invitational (MSI) to Brazil and the League of Legends World Championship (Worlds) to China. MSI and Worlds represent the pinnacles of League of Legends international competition. This year we’re expanding these tournaments to be more inclusive of all regions, as well as to give fans an opportunity to see their teams compete against the best in the world and earn their place amongst them.

Retiring International Wildcard (IWC)

Starting this year, all 13 regions will participate at MSI and Worlds 2017. We’ll be retiring International Wildcard-exclusive events and will no longer use the IWC classification.

New seeding

For MSI and Worlds, we’ll be awarding seeds based on previous competitive results including MSI 2015, Worlds 2015, MSI 2016, and Worlds 2016.

New tournament stage: the Play-In

We’ll be expanding the tournament format of both MSI and Worlds to accommodate all regions with a new phase, the Play-In Stage. This new stage will happen before the Group Stage. The Play-In Stage format and participating teams will vary for MSI and Worlds.

New MSI implications for Worlds

In addition to the top 4 regions at MSI claiming the top 4 seeds at Worlds (similar to 2016), the top performing region out of BR, CIS, JPN, LAN, LAS, OCE, SEA, and TUR will earn an additional seed at Worlds.

  • Group Stage: May 10-14 at the Jeunesse Arena (formerly Rio Arena) in Rio de Janeiro

Absolutely LOVE the changes to the way all regions will be included in MSI and Worlds. Having teams from all regions competing against each other for even more time will mean the various meta games will have more time to mesh, and play style diversity will no doubt increase as a result of teams seeing various strategies and then adopting them. (see lane swaps; MSI 2016; CLG) Great call Riot, this will without question raise the level of competition across all regions, all while making the World Championship trophy that much more prestigious. Can't wait to see the changes in action!

Before the Olympics they totally didn't round up orphans on the street and destroy favelas to make it look prettier on TV. 35,000 people weren't forcefully relocated out of their homes in Rio. 26 people weren't killed by the Pacifying Police Units and 28 more people didn't report being injured by them during the games. They definitely also didn't have issues with security, like having athletes personal items stolen by workers at the Olympic village during a fire drill, or having a gun go off at an event, and finding spent shells on the grounds of another. Multiple Australian Olympians weren't robbed at gunpoint, and more members of their team weren't assaulted before the games. Police and firefighters also didn't greet people at airports with a big sign that certainly didn't say, "Police and firefighters are not paid, you will not be safe in Rio de Janeiro."

Oh yeah, during the 2014 FIFA World Cup, there totally weren't riots during the event, and more ghettos being leveled leading up to the international competition. There certainly wasn't a bridge that collapsed, killing and injuring more people. And you know what there definitely hasn't been in Rio? Drug traffickers killing almost 4,000 people a year for the past decade. That certainly hasn't been a thing at all. In the favela called Rocinha, it's not possible to walk down the street and come to a table with illegal firearms and bags of cocaine and marijuana laid out in plain view, with guards brandishing AK-47s standing in the shadows. Oh, this favela also didn't neighbor one of the major stadiums where the Olympic games were held in 2016. I swear, it wasn't a 5 minute walk down the block.

Satire aside, I think this was a pretty poor decision based on how the local government in Rio de Janeiro and the Brazilian state and federal governments have handled previous international events, and can't guarantee the safety of the visiting teams. The US government officially warned athletes concerned about zika to not attend the games. Kenya considered not attending at all over it. At least 15 golfers didn't attend due to zika fears, including the top 4 seeded male golfers. The princess of Monaco, herself a South African Olympian, also cited zika as the reason she would not attend.

So does this means the times won't make the games watchable for NA viewers?
