The Final Fight: Season 2 with TPA's MiSTakE

The Final Fight is a series where we catch up with World Champions from Seasons 1-4 and have them recount the special moments before and after they took down the Nexus to win Worlds. When did they know they had won? And how did it feel to become a League of Legends World Champion?

Throughout the Season 2 Championship in October 2012, Russian powerhouse Moscow5 was favored to make it to the Finals. So when the Taiwanese Taipei Assassins lived up to their name and soundly beat them 2-1 in the Semifinals -- M5's second set loss at LAN in 10 months -- the stage was primed for an exciting Finals between TPA and Korea's OGN Summer Champion, Azubu Frost.

"We were treated as an underdog. That made us to play games without much pressure," recalls MiSTakE, TPA's former support and team captain. Ahead of the Finals, MiSTakE and TPA were already sure that the Summoner's Cup would be theirs, especially if they could lock down a certain pick.

"After we beat M5, we all thought we would win the Championship. At that time, our bottom laners played better than our opponents," he says, referring to himself and bebe against Woong and MadLife. "When we got Orianna, it reinforced our confidence to win the game because the strategy of [using an] Orianna team composition was our best one."

The Final Fight of the Season 2 World Championship occurred after a patient prolonged siege of Azubu Frost's base. By that point, the Taipei Assassins had soundly dominated their opponents, both in the current game and the prior two. They took Baron and charged towards top, taking out Woong while Stanley kept Shy busy at bottom. The rest of TPA then swarmed through AZF's base, taking out every turret and inhibitor except for the two guarding the Nexus, before backing off to heal up for the last push.

Azubu Frost tried to hold on, but their two Nexus turrets simply weren't enough to ward off three waves of super minions on top of the mighty Taipei Assassins. In one last battle, complete with a crushing Orianna ultimate from Toyz that killed CloudTemplar, the Taipei Assassins became the Season 2 World Champions.

"At the moment of victory, in my mind, I thought, 'We really made it!!" remembers Mistake. "All our efforts of heavy training for months became the sweetest feeling in my heart, with full satisfaction." Fireworks erupted from the stage as 10,000 fans, and the members of the Taipei Assassins, screamed TPA! TPA! TPA!

"It became a lifetime memory when all shouted TPA in the venue," says MiSTakE, who also left us with some words of wisdom. "Because of our victory, I wish to remind every player: Don't look down on any team. When you let down your guard, they will always bite you hard."

This is the best, and will forever be the best underdog story in League of Legends. Twelve teams came into the season 2 world championship, and TPA was easily the 11th or 12th place team in most caster's mind, along with the Saigon Jokers. TPA and Saigon Jokers were equivalent to the "wild card" teams that we have today. Imagine either Pain Gaming or the Bankok Titans beating SKT in the finals to win the world championship, that's how jaw-dropping it was at the time. TPA destroyed everyone's expectations and overcame the impossible to win it all.

I remember watching this Worlds too. Man, I was cheering so loud for TPA, I was so ecstatic when they won. S2 and S3 are by far be my favorite Worlds thus far.

Don't get me wrong, it was a completely crappy thing for Azubu Frost to cheat like they did. However, TSM never would have won that series even if they hadn't. The cheating certainly helped them, but Azubu Frost was always going to beat TSM. They were just a better team, which makes it all the more annoying that they cheated to begin with.

Azubus Woong was caught looking at a live minimap that was on display for the spectators early on in a match against TSM. It was speculated because of the knowledge gained from that look, Azubu's Jayce player took a different skill (E I think) because they already knew where TSM was, and reacted accordingly. There was also a ping from Frost in the area that TSM was hiding, despite Frost having no vision in that area

TSM had a secret strategy to hide in a bush and catch one of them out for an easy first blood. But he looked and saw them standing in it on the big screen behind them before so it was completely wasted and considering how snowbally the game was back then, couldve given TSM the game, and maybe the momentum to take the series

I recall the series being a lot closer than you describe, AZF didnt stomp tsm. TSM-AZF the first game was 14-17, and the second one was 12-18. If TSM had gotten that first kill in the bush maybe they woulda had the momentum to take the series, i mean the game was a lot more snow bally back then. Because of that cheating noone will ever know how the 3rd game couldve gone.

You high? TPA was SO underrated. They were ranked one of the worst teams in the tournament and they won the whole thing. How the hell can you be overrated when people think you are one of the worst and you win...

For myself who has been playing League since beta and been watching the competitive scenes more intensively since season 2, TPA mechanically and strategically destroyed everyone showcasing their skills at worlds. Toyz at mid especially caught my eye back then and I have been a huge fan of his since then. Watching him outplaying other mid laners in the entire world stage impressed me a lot. He would always be the "original Faker" and the best mid laner in my heart over Faker before the LoL playerbase exploded in season 3 and everyone got of the Faker hype train since SKT won the S3 finals.

Unfortunately, after season 2, TPA "disbanded" or rather, TPA was still there, but all 5 of the core members left the team for various reasons. Some decided to retire, while others decided to join a new team and since then no GPL team was strong enough to be a real contender for worlds.

Years passed and the LMS was formed. And in 2015 S5 of worlds Taiwan teams are ready to shine once again on the world stage. Dear Trashwolves and FakeHQ, you guys might not be the once legendary TPA in my heart but i'll still support you guys, good luck!!!

I have to agree that Toyz was the midlane sologodbeast of his time :) he even won at the allstar event after S2 worlds so he really was like the best player around before the faker hype started

during the tsm vs azubu match, one of the azubu members looked behind him which shows the both team in the match. that azubu member didnt even hide it because he pinged where tsm was hiding in the first 30 seconds of the game

Azubu didn't cheat... sometimes teams have something like ex:( C9 had not much vision but then they could use where they saw, lets say Leesin in mid and predict where he would have gone) This is how many people win... use that to outplay teams, thats how my friend got to diamond without me I duo with him then I had vacation

Ummm dude. Please learn the situation before you speak. Azubu completely cheated. It was liek 30 seconds into the game. TSM had a plan to suprise Shy in top lane and kill him for first blood or invade or something (we won't know as cheating foiled it). You don't have vision of shit 30 seconds into the game. You can't use process of elimination to determine where someone is if the game just started and you have 0 wards placed.
