Cloud9 taking the Hai road to Worlds

Riot··1 votes·40,242 views

Cloud9 is playing for a spot in Worlds.

Last year, that wouldn't have been much of a surprise. But as the team floated through the 2015 NA LCS Summer Split, ending with a 6-12 record, it wasn't clear if they'd even be able to keep their spot in the NA LCS. So how did a team that seemed destined for the Promotion Tournament go on to become a team that could represent NA at Worlds? The short answer is Hai "Hai" Du Lam. But as we all know, an individual can only carry you so far in League of Legends.

Matching Up

After William "Meteos" Hartman stepped down ahead of Week 6, Hai returned to take up shot-calling for the besieged team, only this time from the jungle. But by that point, trust issues had already bubbled up within Cloud9. As such, Hai's first steps involved reassuring his mid lane replacement, Nicolaj "Incarnati0n" Jensen, that the NA LCS rookie could rely on him.

[[{"fid":"18810","view_mode":"full","fields":{"format":"full","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":"","field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":""},"tagName":"IMG","src":"http%3A//admin.prod.lolesports.com/s3/files/styles/full_width_scale/public/Hai%2520Incarnation.jpg%3Fitok%3DKYJ-p_BG","type":"media","attributes":{"class":"media-element file-full","height":"315","width":"700"}}]]

"Before every single game I tell him I've got his back, and whatever he does I'll be there with him," says Hai. "I constantly give him updates on what I'm doing so he knows what he can and can't do. So he's a lot more confident in his play now, knowing that his team is behind him fully." Their synergy helped Incarnati0n stay focused, and together, Cloud9 began gaining momentum.

With the team finally becoming a stronger unit in practice, their spirits seemed lifted. As they ventured into their Week 6 NA LCS game against the formidable Team Liquid, all eyes were on Hai as he locked in Rek'Sai. His performance wasn't too flashy, yet he was able to influence the early game with several decisive calls, giving Cloud9, and Incarnati0n in particular, some much needed guidance.

They didn't win that game, or the two after. But with Hai's leadership, Cloud9 looked more coordinated than they had all Split. And together, the team continued taking the necessary steps towards fixing their problems.

New Dynamics

[[{"fid":"18811","view_mode":"full","fields":{"format":"full","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":"","field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":""},"tagName":"IMG","src":"http%3A//admin.prod.lolesports.com/s3/files/styles/full_width_scale/public/Cloud9_7.jpg%3Fitok%3DfQTCTiZ4","type":"media","attributes":{"class":"media-element file-full","height":"315","width":"700"}}]]

C9's next move involved a change within their support staff. They brought on a new coach, Royce "Bubbadub" Newcomb from their Challenger Series squad Cloud9 Tempest, which served as a catalyst for even more improvement. According to Hai, one of the results of the change was dusting off Daerek "LemonNation" Hart's notebook, giving the support more autonomy to make decisions during picks and bans. As a result? "Everyone's morale went up," he said.

And that includes Hai's. As he's settled into his new role, he's been given the chance to play champions he enjoys -- like Rengar, Nunu, and Shyvana -- rather than settling on popular meta picks. "It's definitely fun to do something new. But at the same time, I miss being able to play mid lane," he says, admitting his mindset is different than other junglers. Setting himself apart, he's utilized new builds in the NA LCS, experimenting with the uncommon Poacher's Knife and Sated Devourer jungle enchantment, as he's figured out what works best for him, his team, and his evolving play style.

A Radiant Finish

[[{"fid":"18812","view_mode":"full","fields":{"format":"full","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":"","field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":""},"tagName":"IMG","src":"http%3A//admin.prod.lolesports.com/s3/files/styles/full_width_scale/public/Cloud9_2_0.jpg%3Fitok%3DLD8XQcPH","type":"media","attributes":{"class":"media-element file-full","height":"315","width":"700"}}]]

Everything came together for Cloud9 in Week 9. Sure they started off the week on a sour note losing to the 1-15 Team Dragon Knights ("People were giving crap to TDK because they have a bad record, and I thought they played pretty well," said Hai). But after that speed bump, they went on to upset Team SoloMid when it mattered most. And followed it up with a season-saving win in their tiebreaker against Team 8.

Beating T8 was huge: the victory locked Cloud9 in 7th place, earning them entry into the 2016 Spring Split. On top of that, they got to keep the 70 Championship Points they earned in the 2015 Spring Split, securing their berth into the 2015 NA LCS Regional Qualifiers.

[[{"fid":"18813","view_mode":"full","fields":{"format":"full","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":"","field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":""},"tagName":"IMG","src":"http%3A//admin.prod.lolesports.com/s3/files/styles/full_width_scale/public/Hai_2_0.jpg%3Fitok%3DIaiGH1rC","type":"media","attributes":{"class":"media-element file-full","height":"315","width":"699"}}]]

Hai breathes a sigh of relief at the notion that he was able to help his team stay in the LCS, and seems excited about what's to come. With five additional weeks to practice alongside the team, and with the upswing they found towards the end of the Split, Cloud9 could ride their momentum to threaten other top teams heading into the gauntlet. They'll play against Gravity in the first round, and should they make it through the Regional Qualifiers, we'll see Hai and Cloud9 return to the Worlds stage once again.

"The issue is the competition is going to get harder from now on. I think we're improving as well, but I feel like I need more practice in the jungle for us to take a game against the top teams in the world, as I feel like they might abuse the things I do more," he says. Nevertheless, he can't help but look forward to the opportunity. "I'm excited to play against everyone there to see who is good, who is bad, and if we can match up with them or not," he says.

It won't be easy, but it doesn't seem like that's the type of thing to stop Cloud9.

Watch Hai and Cloud9 take on Gravity in the 2015 NA LCS Regional Qualifier on August 29 at 12pm PDT, right here on Lolesports.

Sure the odds are against them, but they're teamwork and great leadership is what have made them so dominating in earlier seasons. I've supported them from the start and will continue to do so... LETS GO CLOUD 9!

I'm pretty sure I'm the only one who doesn't believe in Cloud9. I just doubt that their crazy strategies will last 3 Bo5s.

No most people expect TL to go as the third seed, but Cloud 9 still has a large fan base so it seems like there's a lot of hype around the team

Trognar7 votes

Well, on paper, I can see why you would assume TL would have the best shot. That is how TL has always been though, a roster filled with skill that should be able to beat everyone else in NA. But as they proved in the playoffs, they have no idea how to play the game once the clock hits 20 minutes. Even worse, they aren't able to get enough of an early game advantage to just flat out win. Between the total and complete collapse of GV and the suspension of TiP's star player, C9 actually has a really good shot at worlds with their ability to actually contest and trade objectives. More significantly, C9 has a chance to actually do something at worlds, while TL will get absolutely destroyed by every other team that has qualified as of now.

SAFFATLOL2 votes

I know all that, hence why I saud you would expect Tl to win it after having finished 3rd in the playoffs which included beating TiP and them having the most favourable seed. I believe anybody who actually follows the NA scene will know of TL weak points and their lack of ability to make use of their early advantages.

On the whole C9 thing, if you "could" make the argument, then actually make it. Assuming all semifinalists were stronger, which isn't unreasonable, meaning that SSW, SSB, SHRC and OMG were stronger than C9. I also would say that EDG were stronger, going 3/2 in the quarters against finalists SHRC. TSM won the NA LCS split against C9, so arguably TSM was stronger than C9, however that's stretching somewhat, I'm not gonna watch the VODS just for the argument. Alliance, Whiteshield were both roughly equal to C9, from just their group performance, however if you take their results from the summer season, NJWS was stronger than C9, as was Alliance. NJWS having taken down summer regional champions, KT Arrows in the regional qualifier, who were the strongest team in Korea (their run through the playoffs was insane). However the way Korean teams qualified for worlds, meant they couldn't get there. The upset loss to Kabum by Alliance really was just an upset.

So: SSW, SSB, SHRC, OMG and EDG were definitely stronger, that's already 5 teams that are stronger, just at worlds, then you have KT Arrows and NJWS, who in a best of 5 most likely would have been stronger, having more experience from Champions in playing a series of games. Alliance may have been stronger, but they were probably equal.

So actually you might be right, claiming that C9 was top 5/6 at worlds is not a huge exaggeration, I personally wouldn't agree, placing both NJWS and KTA above them, but from the results, your argument does hold up (that and KTA weren't at worlds). I personally would have them tied for 8th with Alliance and Fnatic just underneath.

They have a good shot at GOING to worlds. They do not have a shot at actually doing something at worlds. Especially since 3rd seed is likely to land them in the group of hell. Unless CLG plays like they did against TSM (actually better since there were some pretty close moments) at worlds NA is likely to have a rough showing. Let's not forget C9, when they were allegedly on a surge to return to their former selves, dropped a game to TDK running an all AD composition.

"I'm pretty sure I'm the only one who doesn't believe in Cloud9. I just doubt that their crazy strategies will last 3 Bo5s. " - TurquoiseYoshi

Crazy strategies are awesome for Bo5s, assuming you have enough of them. But if it's just one crazy strat done five times, you're done for. They're also less useful if they're not solid enough to force a ban from the other team.

As for C9 chances specifically, I'm not really sure. Hai clearly wasn't that prepared for returning to the LCS initially. If he's got himself back into shape and re-integrated with the team, they may again be a serious force to reckon with.

Of course there's also the question of Gravity getting back into their mid-season shape, which was just beautiful. I honestly don't understand what happened to them. They were doing everything right and just started to do everything wrong.

It's going to be a wild Gauntlet.

TurquoiseYoshi2 votes

I know that crazy strats can win Bo5s very easily, I just don't think C9 has enough of them. 6-10 games is a whole lot, and after those, they're easy to pick/ban away. If it gets used once and wins, then the losing team bans it. Then they pull out something more meta and probably get beaten. I don't think C9 can make enough of these weird jungle picks to win 9 games.

pyroHedge4 votes

Ya, you're right. I misread your comment. I missed the "3" before "Bo5s." My bad there.

That said, C9 may not need crazy strats to win all their games. C9 were definitely good enough last split to beat most teams without such craziness. A lot will depend on whether or not Gravity shows up.

Also, I didn't think about this until now, but TIP is probably going to be brutal. Rush is going to just abuse Hai in the jungle. I'm really curious if C9's trying to figure out a solution to that. Or if Hai's just hoping he'll be able to handle it.
