2014 was LGD Gaming’s first year in LPL, and it wasn’t easy. The team suffered initially with the champion changes that rolled out at the start of the season, then a slew of roster changes took a period of adjustment. By the end of the Regional Qualifier in August, LGD found a formula that worked, and they stood out as definitively the fourth best team in LPL. They narrowly missed a berth at the World Championship and have since picked up acquisitions that show they mean business.
All through 2014, and even in 2013, the top lane stood out as a weak point for LGD. Not taking any chances in 2015, LGD has doubled down on the top lane talent but has seemingly decided to start off the season with Choi “Acorn” Cheonju. Acorn has a reputation as both a tank-style top laner and a terrifying Rumble player. This emphasis on utility will round out the playmakers in the other lanes.
Gu “imp” Seungbin, previously of Samsung Galaxy White, will share the carry burden with mid lane playmaker Wei “LuciFer” Lian. Both have a reputation for going ham, so the rest of the team will have to back them up with firm direction. Chen “Pyl” Bo is a strong captain who can lead them.
LGD’s potential hiccups come from the style they established in late 2014. LGD played around some of their top lane weaknesses by skirting 5v5s when possible and playing the rotation-based game. This style might be more difficult to execute with a language barrier, so we expect LGD to undergo yet another period of adjustment before potentially finishing at the top of the league.
