Rewards for Pick'em

Hi everyone!

I am a big LoL fan. I like to try my best to understand the pro scene: the meta, what players and teams are good, what coaches make good drafts and everything. The idea of this game(and of all missions) is to challenge players, give them something to work hard for. In this case it should challenge your understanding and knowledge of competitive League of Legends, but for me it does not feel this way with pick 'em.

You feel challenged when your ability, your skills make a difference. With this year's rewards it almost doesn't. Yes, if you are a god and get right everything in the tournament you get a big prize, may be even unnecessary. But there is no difference between the decent and the great. Scoring 34 points in the whole tournament is a joke. If all players had to place the teams randomly, the average score at the end of the tournament should be around 48. The math will be at the end of the post.

I would have liked for riot to introduce decent rewards in order to differentiate player who understand the pro scene from those who don't. And give us something to compete for maybe. An example would be rewarding the top 10% with something unique that express your mastery on the field.

What do you guys think about that and what would you consider a fair reward that stimulates our interest, make us feel great about guessing games right, but still does not go against riot's interests?

The math: By randomly picking every choice you would on average guess: 4 of the 8 teams getting out of groups: 8 pts the exact positioning of 2 of the 4 teams you have guessed: 6 pts the exact positioning of 2 teams who did not make it: 4 pts half of the winners of quarterfinals: 10 pts half of the winners of semis: 10 pts half of the players would guess the winner of the finals, which makes for an average of: 10 pts each

8+6+4+10+10+10=48

This is how well your 3 years old sister would perform. And he has the same chances of putting SKT and AHQ as the winners of the tournament.

Edit: Oh, and btw, this means that there is no difference in rewards between a fairly unlucky monkey who randomly gets 34 points and a god who guesses everything right except for the position of the third and fourth seed of a group scoring 122 points. (let's say of FW and Misfits)

I think riot is worried that if they ever make the prizes too generous and then a worlds with no upsets happens. A popular reddit thread was suggesting just put the korean team in #1 in every group they're in and then randomize every thing else.

Last worlds 3/4 teams in semifinals were koreans and the only reason more people didn't get every thing right was the crazy wildcard/h2k upsets.

The amount of randomness is pretty massively diminished if you predict the korean team as #1 in every group, the korean team winning every quarter final, and the korean team winning every semi-final.

The above scenario isn't any where near 100% likely, but it's too plausible of a scenario to justify any more generous rewards in my opinion. If a massive upset doesn't happen then you're going to have tens of thousands of people with a near perfect pick-em.
