ANX and ROX advance to the Quarterfinals

Riot··2 votes·17,197 views

We’re all Lunatics now as the CIS’ Albus NoX Luna advances to the Quarterfinals alongside Korea's ROX Tigers.

ANX advances. ANX advances. ANX advances. Say it three times and the Russian winter will descend upon your land. A tournament rife with upsets continued the trend today as ANX secured the most successful run for an International Wildcard ever after notching their third win of the tournament against Counter Logic Gaming. They then followed that with the biggest  triumph in Worlds History.

It was also one of the longest matches ever, but in a grueling 66 minute teeth-clencher, they pulled off the previously unthinkable by knocking Korea's No. 1 seed ROX Tigers to their knees. It was one of the most exciting matches of the tournament -- or ever! And with the win, they became the first team to secure a trip to the Worlds Quarterfinals. It’s a remarkable achievement for both ANX and for all of the International Wildcard regions.

And while ANX will deservedly dominate headlines, its the ROX Tigers who managed to take first place in the group. With their backs against a corner, ROX looked dominant against CLG en route to punching their ticket into the Quarterfinals. They carried that momentum into the tiebreaker rematch against ANX to clinch Group A’s top seed.

[[{"fid":"23395","view_mode":"centered","fields":{"format":"centered","field_file_image_alt_text[und][0][value]":"","field_file_image_title_text[und][0][value]":""},"tagName":"IMG","src":"http%3A//admin.prod.lolesports.com/s3/files/styles/centered/public/29532999053_c64b916596_o.jpg%3Fitok%3DHAN0-N19","type":"media","attributes":{"class":"media-element file-centered","height":"661","width":"992"}}]]

With the the conclusion of this group, let’s take a look back and see what we learned. Here are the quick takeaways from Group A:

  • The ROX Tigers are breathing a sigh of relief as they leave San Francisco atop this group. Their early game issues were exploited -- from Smeb's over-aggression to teams camping Kuro -- and it became clear they're not unstoppable. Surprise punches from Week 1 saw them lose the early game against all three of their opponents, and Week 2 didn't get better until they were facing elimination. They're a missed Baron Smite away from booking an early ticket home to Korea. But once their gears revved towards the end of the day, they looked exactly like what we expected -- aggressive and lethal.

  • In standard lanes, you have to be able to match your opponents on a mechanical level for the early game or you’ll get run over. And ANX repeatedly won the early game -- in large part thanks to the roaming prowess of their support, Likkrit. There were unique picks in Anivia for mid and Brand for support, but they weren’t cheesy -- they were legitimate comfort picks. And on the macro level, this was a team willing to take the initiative, which is a hallmark trait of World Championship caliber teams. They started Barons. They started team fights. ANX is the real deal.

  • Before Worlds, if you’d told fans that Counter Logic Gaming would go 2-0 against G2 and 1-1 against ROX, they’d be ecstatic. But if you paused after that and just stared at them, slowly, surely, they’d start to furrow their brows and ask you, “What about ANX?” And you wouldn’t have to answer. They would just know. CLG crushed the early game when they got their picks -- especially when they got Aurelion Sol -- and Stixxay had another particularly strong international showing. Such discrepancies on champion picks might mean their pools are shallow, and now they'll have time to improve on that weakness.

  • Between Worlds and the Mid-Season Invitational, G2 Esports' combined international record is 3-13. They just couldn’t manage to translate their strengths -- the dominance of Trick and their bot lane -- onto the Worlds stage. And it seemed as if early struggles perpetuated themselves throughout the matches -- at times, the team’s individual mechanical gaffes were dumbfounding. They didn’t even have a chance to play out the macro portion properly. G2 will need to spend the offseason trying to identify exactly what went wrong.

In exchange for busting nearly every bracket in the world, Group A gave us match after match of excitement. ANX’s historic run in this group is a major milestone for League of Legends history. While the first two teams are locked in for the Quarterfinals, there are still six spots to claim. Be sure to tune in to the rest of the weekend to see how the final field pans out.

Choke Lots Gaming strikes again

They lost to the tourny favorites and a surprizingly great team in ANX. CLG even defied their region's expectations (their own casters putting them in 3rd). The real (j/ch)oke is G2. What happened to EU? They were much better than this, and even have some of their star players in fanatic still there.

angery pout1 votes

This is what happens at Worlds when YellOwStaR and Dyrus aren't there. Wildcards strike, EU fails, and TSM looks like it has a chance.

(I love Dyrus but I love him so much more now that he's a full-time streamer. Pls don't kill me.)

Nah g yellowstar left so TSM can actually start winning xdxd (banter)

angery pout1 votes

LOL. I think Biofrost is much better for TSM than YS was, just because of how poor his synergy was with Doublelift.

He's still got my respect just because he's one of the pros that has remained relevant to the pro scene in League from the beginning.

Divine Winds1 votes

Bio def has better synergy w/ dlift than ys had... I'm a pretty big Bio fan

Eleshakai1 votes

Yellowstar is a great support. He's just not the type of support that TSM or Doublelift need. Plain and simple. :)

The moment we knew G2 and EU were still bad CLG had expectations to make it out, but they choked. Both are chokes.

And with that, everyone's worlds pick 'em is off.

Somewhere out there, there's one guy who did his Pick 'Ems while completely drunk. He'll be happy about today.

When ANX gets swept out I hope CLG feels even worse than they've made their fans feel over the years. I stuck with them through disappointing season in 2013 and 2014. I stuck with them after their embarrassing performance last year. But this is too much. Go to hell, CLG. item 3070 item 3070

i'm in the same boat man. i been clg fan since 2014. but after that draft against anx and how dumb that team comp was. time for me to find a new na team. and it wont be team solo cry

C9 then? They've been on an upswing since Hai left. We'll be happy to have you and your energy.

Parrot Trooper3 votes

Oh god forbid, CLG is actually human! They have one of the best ever finishes by an NA team internationally, they always seem to Counter all Logic(for better or worse) making them one of the most exciting teams to watch, and they never count themselves out against anyone. CLG fan and proud, since season 3!

SloreDemon2 votes

I hope you are not referring to this worlds as "one of the best ever finishes by an NA team internationally," but are referring to MSI. Which, btw, was a small sample of teams and that previous success clg has shown to be unable to replicate. They were trash summer split, are trash in worlds, and got trashed in groups. They blew their load with the aurelion sol and had basically nothing left after that. Their top lane has been underporfor ING for quite some time, sitxxay and aphro fluxuate between good and trash, and the trash side showed up more this worlds, and their mid is, for all intents and purposes, a 1 trick. That being said, no one reasonably thought clg would do well or make it out of groups so to say they disappointed would be innacurate. Luckily for them, G2 has proven to be the pinnacle of trash. Good news is they don't have to take a plane home.

This is completely out from a sports anime. Wildcard team does the impossible and marks history, reaching the heart of new fans, even though the #1 rival still took first place. Cannot wait for season 2 where they take over and win

I'm glad that a Wildcard team made it out of groups. I knew it was going to happen in the next year or two, so it's really good to see.

I just wish there was a bit more humility coming from ANX.

CarecaDoBrazzers16 votes

I can't remember a single moment where ANX disrespected or were toxic with others players or teams. Did you see what Likkrit said about G2 ?

MeilinII3 votes

This. I literally texted my bestie and was like "This Likkrit kid is a good sport. I like him." and then I went and followed his twitter because I like the cut of his sail. Honest, and a good sport.

Eleshakai1 votes

'a bit more humility' is different from 'disrespecting others'. I never said they disrespected, insulted, or were toxic to others. One can be arrogant without insulting others.

I said they could use a bit more humility. Perhaps Uminwolf is correct and it's simply poor English making them come across that way, but every interview/article I've seen citing their words has an air of arrogance to it that I find a little disconcerting.

But again, Umin could be correct that it's simply that they're not the best at the language. Either way, I can't help the impression I've gotten from them.

M5 back in the day was the exact same way, if not 'worse.' In any interview that Alex Ich was not a part of, the players would sound really off-putting and arrogant, but it's really just a culture breach from Western Europe/USA to Russia. They don't have the same cultural customs or sensitivities we have over here. I mean, look at this very thread; we're upset at players at WORLDS levels of humility when it's clear these guys are very excited and humbled to be playing there and performing. It's just a bit too nitpicky to be valid. They're 17-22 year old guys in most cases who've only known what they hear in schoolyards and online. Let them live a little.

I guess I just expect more from people if they're going to earn my respect than you. Must be easy to live up to such low standards.

Could you give an example of this? Cuz every single interview that I saw was literally them respecting the opponent.

I believe he's talking about what happened after their first loss to ROX. Likkrit didn't shake hands with any of the members on ROX, but he later apologized for it publicly (albeit during the start of his interview after his team picked up their first win at Worlds) and then in all other losses he actually did shake hands with the opposing team.

Here we found the CLG fan.

Eleshakai1 votes

No actually... most of the teams I'm a fan of didn't make it to Worlds. C9 is the only one who did.

I respect CLG for their accomplishments, and I'm a big fan of Aphromoo as a player. But the teams I like didn't have the best years this year. :)

UminWolf5 votes

I do agree that there is this feeling of no humility, but I think that is a combination of young players fueled by passion and who's english isn't the strongest. Because honestly, the only lack of humility coming from them i would say is in their word choices, and I can't fault a team from Russia for that. They do seem to want to respect every team, just might not know "the best" words to use, but I think their intention and spirit are coming from the right place. I also think they are super hyped that people are cheering for them, so they want to soak up and make as much of the "lime light" as possible. As long as they don't get crazy with trash talk or feeling themselves, I can look past the passionate hype these guys are probably experiencing. And lets be honest, they are playing like a world class team. Their macro and communication for the all but a few calls has been completely on point. Even if it's a "bad call" they make it as a team and they don't give up.

They're young, so just give them time to find themselves amongst the crowd and hype, then I think you'll see a world class team with a little bit of spice to them, which is what all great teams need :)

Congratz to ANX for making history. Even though CLG disappointed during that game, they still have improved. Maybe now that we respect Wildcards, it can give us a win next year. CLG give us an amazing run next year

Parrot Trooper2 votes

Thats the frame of mind CLG fans need to have. Nice to see the positivity!

Grym Bolt3 votes

I hate it how fans will give up on a team when they start to do bad. Yes CLG has been having a hard couple of years, but they need to realize that getting shot down will only make the team stronger. Also to all people who say teams suck, I suppose you could do better?[slayer-jinx-wink]

SloreDemon1 votes

For future advice never use the "Can you do better?" argument because it is at best a trash argument that allows for no judgement or critique. To the topic at hand, "start to do bad" is a mislabel for CLG. They've been this heaping mess of inconsistency since inception, and only appeared to shake it off spring split. After which their usual trashiness returned promptly despite maintaining the entire roster and (I believe) staff that got them 2nd place finish at MSI* (footnote that MSI is a small sample size of teams so 2nd place finish isn't as impressive, especially when considering that CLG managed to avoid playing the 2 best teams at the tournament in quarters). Most people who watched NA summer and summer playoffs are in concordance that CLG was not in the top 3 of NA. Coming into the group they were not projected to make it out by most accounts, but upon seeing the implosion of G2 (who could've foreseen the vacationers sucking balls again) CLG's chances of making it out of groups actually became very real. They wasted almost no time punting said chance away. Being able to dick down ROX like they did week 1 meant they had the theoretical capability to make it out of groups. Unfortunately, they couldn't help but succumb to their true calling of being trash, and found themselves in the trash next yillian's old jersey. If I were a CLG fan, I would be pretty fed up with how ass they are. Legit straight booty cheeks. Also you say having a hard couple of years (plural) like this isnt only season 6. A couple of years out of a max 6 is grounds to turn one's back on them.

ANX will play a #1 team and ROX will play a #2 team.

We have no idea what groups those will come from yet (it is randomized). We also, obviously, do not know what teams will finish as #1 and #2 seeds in the other 3 groups.

didn't anyone tell you to not spoil the results?

I'm was thinking of casually watching the games over the weekend, and now my group A results are spoiled.

Especially when other rioter's name pops up on the red tracker on the boards, and the title is all there for people to see.

Please use a different title next time.

Great idea! Hmmm....I want to watch the games this weekend and I don't want to spoil the results. What's a good idea? OH, LET ME LOG ON TO THE LOL.ESPORTS WEBSITE. I am sure ABSOLUTELY NOTHING will be there! You dug your own grave bud. If you don't want to spoil the results, don't go on to the only website that can. Stop blaming riot.
